  • Whoo hooo a December kiln opening with lots of glazes combos from Amaco! You will want to grab a pen and notebook to write down your favorite combos to try!
I love kiln openings and I share all of my glaze combos and how I apply them, really they are one of the best ways to learn about glazes .I always keep a notebook that way I can remember what glazes I used so I can repeat them again or if I am not happy with them so I can figure out how to make them better.
Something I want you all to remember is that there are no failures just learning opportunities to improve upon next time!
Check out all of my making and applying glazes classes on tv.clayshare.com
    About my kiln Openings:
All of my kiln openings are filmed in 4K HD for UA-cam, tv.ClayShare.com, and as a live broadcast on my Facebook page. This allows me to answer your questions about what glaze I used and how I did it. If you want to joining the live fun be sure to follow the ClayShare facebook page and sign up for notifications.
Lots of pieces with texture from my Moroccan Tile rolling pin and my Southwest pin in this kiln along with some great glaze tests.
My rolling pins are available from:
    www.claysharemarket.com
I am thrilled with how even my L&L kiln fires. It is crazy how I can watch the firing on the app and see that it is completely even top to bottom! So impressed with this kiln what they can do!
I am super excited that Clayscapes Pottery will be making and selling 5 more of my glazes in 2020! They will be Spearmint, Cobblestone, Berry(not Shown in this video), Oribe and the Lake Blue. I am still deciding what we should call the Oribe and the Lake Blue glazes and would love to hear your suggestions.
    Partner offers:

Just watched and loved all the things. I can't believe people get on your case for talking. I watch/follow you BECAUSE you talk and share. Some people are just rude. Thank you for all you do to help and educate. There isn't much pottery help around where I live so I really appreciate all your efforts. I just registered for Clay Con West and I'm excited to meet you in person. Keep up all the chatter! :)

A beautiful site for research and color inspiration is
    1. www.amaco.com/glazes-and-underglazes/layering
There you can select top- and baselayer and view possible combinations.
    2. product pages have below downloadable .pdf s which give an idea how the glaze behaves. For example www.amaco.com/products/glaze-pc-1-saturation?ref=2&taxon_id=273
I personally take photos of my test objects, glue them onto a piece of paper and then write down what different glazes I have used, in how many layers I have applied the glaze. After firing, I take another photo, add it to the first one and possibly add a few remarks.
Yes, it's a bit of a time-consuming job, but I have archived my results and can go back months later to certain combinations I liked back then.

i have a question Jessica is it possible to hand paint with acrylic paint {as an undercoat} instead of using decals and then put 2 + coats of clear gloss on top of it? because i love to hand paint items i just didn't know how it would work and if it would be food safe still?

Do you have any tips on how to brush on glazes evenly? Whenever I brush on glazes, it either melts off some or runs. I always get flustered trying to coat everything nicely.

I love love your work!!! Your videos are informative and get me really excited about pottery. I can feel your passion and love for your craft. May I ask the wall plate to the right of the kiln lid looks interesting - Blues, Creams and Greys maybe. Do you possibly have a video on making and glazing those ?

@@JessicaPutnamPhillips Great and thanks, I am starting ceramics with and for my 3 granddaughters, age 14, 12, 8. For fun and maybe they can make a few bucks. I just bought a small Sitter kiln K10 small than I have ever seen, 18" high 24" wide. It will be interesting.

I just got a kiln and am scared to run it, because it is an older one, i know i have to use cones, but it just has dial for high, med and low. there are peep holes, do you have a video on how to use a kiln for the beginner. Properly sounds dumb, I took 4 years of pottery and am pretty good at it, but not once did the school show how to use a kiln. Let alone a manual one. LOL

A new kiln (even if its used) is a very exciting and scary thing. I do have classes on firing your kiln on my website: tv.clayshare.com
My very first kiln and one I still have is like the one you describe and I use it in one of my classes to show you how to fire it.

Low for two hours. If it is a two knob kiln, then turn the bottom to medium for 30 minutes, then the top. Continue for an hour. Then repeat the same for the high settings. If you get an Omega or Fluke pyrometer, you will be able to fire with great accuracy and also do controlled cooling for special glaze effects.

So much fun! Well done Jessica. Did ceramics and pottery in high school then worked at a clay company pugging out bags of clay and worked firing kilns for UCSD here in San Diego. All if this started after my dad bought me a Lockerbie electric wheel for my 18th b-day. Unfortunately life seems to take over and making a living the priority. Seeing your passion and joy reminded me how opening and unloading kilns was, (is) like Christmas morning opening presents! :) Anyway, love your passion and spirit in your video, (just ran across it while watching UA-cam). I hope you have an awesome year coming up and thanks for sharing your joy and love for clay. PS: I am also trying to do videos, (still learning) of my fake rock creations. Have always loved making things with my hands. www.daverhenderson.com and www.davehenderson.podia.com for my free pdf downloads. Best Regards, Dave :)
