    I guess I missed the episode, but I’m guessing the ram pump didn’t work out ?

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  3 роки тому +26

      Great Question! Ram pump as a permanent hassle free system just isn't feesable. It works, it pumps but there's constant maintenance and upkeep. You basically have to keep your eye on it twice a day to ensure you're still pumping water. Then there's the freeze factor associated, it's just not a permanent setup...can't leave the farm for a day without something going wrong

      Thank you for another great video. Can you share your rationale for not using the spare vertical pipe for twisting stability? I understand the second group of four solar panels was overkill.

    Why didn't he go with a pitless adapter on the well, so you wouldn't have to worry about freezing. This is a nice system.

    Great video. Thanks. I guess I can use this set up to fill a very large rainwater harvested underground concrete water tank which will service a seven bed 5 bath house. Would you 1: Have a tank that shares both rain and well waters and 2: 5 stage Filter those waters before or after the tank and why? Many thanks in advance.

    • @TexasVeteranPatriot
      @TexasVeteranPatriot 3 роки тому +1

      You could use both in a single tank, but will need to add a float switch in the tank for the well. Re: filtration, you should already have some method for trapping solids from the catchment system before the tank; i.e. a barrel or some such. The well needs a sand trap filter (sand spinner) to remove fine sediments before the tank for drought times and/or the well runs low when sediment levels can drastically increase. All other filtration takes place before (another strainer) and after the supply booster pump from the tank. NOW, all that being said, there are always potential health hazards with rain catchment systems due to bird or small animal droppings. Make sure your filtration is appropriate. IMO a reverse osmosis system should be used at minimum or with an additional UV light at max. But that's just me...

      Have you checked the price of a new complete windmill installation lately? It would cost double this install....and doing it without special equipment would be very difficult. We replace thousands of windmills every year....I know folks think they look cool but wait until they have to work on them. Some ranchers even leave the windmill up for looks but put a solar pump in for maintenance free water.

    I've been looking into off-grid solar for my well, and had an installer tell me I needed a pressure tank (like in my house) to receive the water, and a pressure switch to turn off the pump when it filled, so the pump doesn't try to run "dead head" (against a closed water line). I did not see this feature in the video... what did you do to resolve this issue? Thanks!

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  2 роки тому

      yep...you need a pressure tank my friend.....I installed one just after this video to fix "water hammer" you will damage your well head if you don't have a pressure tank and you are running to any valve link for ya: ua-cam.com/video/zGgiTvsU3gk/v-deo.html

    Could anyone help me. I love in UK but have a property in South Africa where we have a borehole or borewdll depending what you call it.
    We want to convert it from electricity to solar
    The tank for collecting the water sits at about 10m high (it's a double storey house) and the well is 20m deep
    What would I need to convert it to basic solar. It would only need to fill the tank which is 2500l twice a day and not run permanently

    You put up two very sturdy support posts for your solar array but only used one leaving the whole system at risk. What’s the sense in that?

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  3 роки тому +9

      Each post was for 1 rack of 4 panels, as you can see....the second post is too close. Nothing is at risk, and the racks are not connected. We got our specs confused and I needed to double the distance between posts...so in the next couple weeks I'll go back and install another post, keep the existing post for a nice flag pole. Mistakes happen, communication error...everything isn't perfect all the time my brotha. I had Eric there to guide me for 1 afternoon and 1 full day, not enough time to correct the error. Yep...nobody is perfect

    • @joehomer4421
      @joehomer4421 3 роки тому +6

      So what? You changed your plans but you still could have connected the two posts to advantage at no additional cost. As a matter of fact, if you had connected the two posts at proper distance before backfilling post holes, you could have eliminated the welding job altogether.

    Iv´e been struggling with batteries for years, pumping water with an off grid system. I realized that this system is exactly what i need. Taking away the pump from my house is huge difference, since it´s about 1.7 KW/h less. Plus, the battery bank had to be pretty big to sustain that consumption without damaging the batteries (some lasted less than a year!) Thanks for the upload

    If you are putting a fence around the solar and well a simple trick you can do is to add a small chain link fence just outside that and plant some faster growing berry bushes between the fence lines as the cows will think they are getting a treat as they eat what they can reach. You will still get some berries on the inside of the fence with what is between them being for the wild animals in the area with the only real work you need to do is to cut the old limbs as they grow in but you can dispose of them by simply tossing to the cows.

      My thought exactly. I thought cows rub against anything that doesn't shock them. Raccoons and other critters (some two legged) can also cause problems. Better consider caging it in, instead of using the panels as shade. maybe also electrifying it; I hope we are both wrong. Also, it isn't too hard to imagine some thief getting electrocuted while trying to steal the solar panels. Electric utilities have paid millions to families of thieves who were electrocuted while stealing copper wire.

      @@marlinl.306 1.. if your stealing something and you get hurt.. well they/families shouldn't be able to sue.. that's just wrong.. and after he put the panels on I think he said he would be putting a fence around it..

      @@chelemichele1524Best I can remember the thief had been a lineman at one time, and had an understanding of how the safety equipment at the substation works, and he thought he had tripped the recloser (giant breaker), but it failed to work. I think the court found the power company guilty of negligence. agree completely that criminals should not have the same rights as law abiding citizens.
      I didn't catch that he was planning to add a fence. I remember him mentioning that the cows could use the solar panels as shade. so the fence can't be very far from the panels. Thanks for letting me know.
      Oh, and Josh, thanks for putting out videos like this one. I never considered a pump without a battery. I hope it works great for you. I know you spend lots of time doing research, and I'm sure it will pay off.

      Not every single step was shown. There is cable wrap tape every 20ft. There is a torque arrestor on the pump and the pump is soft start/stop. The submersible cable is actually HDPE jacketed which is much cut resistant, much heavier duty than standard PVC jacketed cable.

    I would think the company would have some type of covers with elastic to put on the solar panels while you are hooking everything up and when everything is done just take the elastic covers off and take them to the next job site that way there’s no chance of getting shocked

    If you’re well is 400 and something feet deep why didn’t you put the pump closer to the bottom so you would have more water

    • @ericmacias9093
      @ericmacias9093 3 роки тому +2

      Alan this is a common misconception. The water reservoir has natural pressure that in this case lifted water to 27ft from surface. Using our level sensor we were able to tell the specific capacity of this well. So it saved SRF the cost of 200ft more poly pipe and copper wire! With today's commodity prices that's a small fortune😉

    • @ericmacias9093
      @ericmacias9093 3 роки тому +2

      The 200ft was because that is how deep he wanted to set in case the water table drops in the future years he won't have to lower the pump anytime soon.
