  • Talking all things faux fireplaces in today’s video! We have a couple faux fireplaces in our apartment and we have tried to make them a seamless part of our apartment but also provide a seasonal statement. The fireplace surround in our bedroom was a really lucky Facebook Marketplace find - using the search terms “fireplace surround”. The other fireplace in our living room is one we bought a few years ago online and had in our previous apartment as well. We have been trying to find a way to make this mantle look a little more real and have a little more character. We decided to add a faux brick interior with a stone like hearth around the brick inside the mantle. It was fairly easy and the materials we used are linked below. Before we get into the details…

    We wanted the fireplace panels to have a stone like facade around the faux brick interior/faux insert. To get this look we used ¼ inch MDF board, a couple pieces of trim and roman clay. The faux brick was peel and stick so after applying that we began to work on the outer panel area. We cut the MDF board into 3 pieces - 2 vertical for the sides and 1 horizontal piece that went over the top middle. Wood filler is a great option for covering the seams. After a quick priming, we applied roman clay for a natural looking stone-like finish. If you haven't used roman clay before, you typically apply it with a sculpting knife or putty knife and repeatedly scrape over the entire area. The finishing touches were a couple pieces of very thin trim around the opening.

    I made a faux fireplace the other day. It turned out amazing I was really excited. I put trim on it …and a nice mantle on it…. I really like it. I am happy with it and I put it upstairs in my guest room so they can have a little fireplace. It’s perfect and it’s decorated for Christmas.

    I live in a single bedroom mobile home. I think that a fireplace would give the place that cabin in the woods type of feel. However I don't own the home so a built in unit is out of the question and it would really spruce the place up during the holidays. Thanks for th information. 😊😊😊

    The mantle is lovely … not so keen on the faux black brick portion. I have a mantle also and I bought a piece of plywood and papered it in anaglypta embossed wallpaper that I painted and accented with gold leaf. Very economical and looks like tiles in the insert.

    This was wonderful to see. I have a fireplace surround but it has the hearth which is I think the floor of the fireplace. But it is so big that it sticks out too much in my little space and I am afraid someone will trip over it at some point. It’s made of resin it’s all one piece and I need to know how to take off that bottom part. It doesn’t have any screws I don’t know if I should use a saw I just don’t know. 😏. These projects are not easy we can visualize them but to put them in action is one hell of a deal.

    • @PrettyinthePines
      @PrettyinthePines  Рік тому +2

      The mantle comes with anchors on each column and we screwed then into the wall. The top piece is separate and we had to use some anchors from Amazon for that. We used these -

      Craigslist Used Furniture By Owner, find an old faux fireplace, find one cheap.
      We found 2 and did our own thing to both saved a ton of work and money on lumber.
      The faux fireplace had been popular in the 1950s retailers like Ethan Allen, etc offered a fireplace with a cut out for the baseboard, popular with apartment dwellers.

      The pillars came with metal hooks that you screw into the wall with wall anchors. Then the top sits on the pillars. It also comes with plaster that you can use to permanently attach the top to the pillars.
