Great video. I enjoyed watching it. I always preorder the limited edition boxsets. But I'm pleased for fans who have missed the limited editions and can get the seasons they are missing on the standard version. It's good to know how much love there is for Doctor Who
I'll be buying the standard issues for two main reasons: 1) Shelf space and 2) Eventual, inevitable, damage to the limited edition sets. As carefully as you treat them, the trays in those limited edition sets are extremely fragile - and I've heard a few people have had issues with the glue attaching them to the base of the box.
Shelf space saving is always useful! I completely here you on the packaging damage! If you look at the top left of my S19 Limited Ed set in the video, you'll see a small crumple in the corner!
@@AdamMartyn Ouch! Another thing to consider (and this links in with the limited packaging) is delivery. Some companies send these out in jiffy bags, resulting in much crumplage (Is that a word? It is now!).
Crumplage is a good word and we're going for it 👌 I've heard about the jiffy bag nightmares some people have had! I've always got my Limited Editions from Amazon and so far (touchwood) haven't had a problem with them!

I’m personally not a fan of the reissues as I prefer the limited edition packaging and everything but I’m glad these are out because it means that I can get the ones I missed (Seasons 18 and 10) for a better price on eBay! I already got Season 19 thanks to this and I can’t wait to use it for my B-Day on Wednesday
Personally I don't agree with you on preferring the limited edition packaging over the standard releases, however its just down to preference at the end of the day. What is good about the re-releases or standard editions is that as you say it has opened up the availability of the Blu-ray collections to people who missed out on the original limited edition versions and couldn't or would not pay the prices that the sets were commanding on ebay.
i was lucky enough to manage to collect every single one released in the time period from november until march where i finished it on the 6th (my birthday) and coincidentally got season 8 on the 8th of March
I have the same issue with my season 12. I was bummed because nowhere did I see it was a 2nd edition and when I opened it, the covers of the blu rays also said season 10.
I've got season 12 in the limited packaging (2nd edition) because when Zoom was still around it had a few back in stock (lucky as anything). But I think when I get the money I'll get season 19 and I'll preorder 10 & 18 when I can. Can't wait for them :D
The 2nd edition of Season 12 in the limited edition version is clearly the best choice for people who want the collectors style package as it has the issues with the original release 99% resolved.

I missed out on the limited edition of season 12 so managed to pick it up finally after the standard release, I don't mind having a mismatch of the sets just as long as I can get the blu rays that I missed out on so waiting on them to release season 8 and 14 then I would have caught up. Yes the booklet might be thinner but we still get to know what extras are on each disc, worth getting if you don't want to pay the expensive limited editions sold on ebay.

I'm in the U.S. as well and had reasons piling up to get a region-free blu-ray player. These limited edition box sets being SO much better than the American releases is what put me over the edge. I have every limited release except Season 12, which I jumped on as soon as it was re-released. The sets have been a bit of a challenge to acquire recently (Brexit-related I assume), but I've figured it out and have been thrilled with the sets!
2:55 i love the front view tardis bit you open up, and enjoy trying to guess what story from each season there gunna use to represent that bit in the box set, like season 26 its ‘curse of fenric’ season 8 it’s ‘colony in space’ ect, altho my guesses are usually wrong haha. For season 7 it’s got to be the tardis in the woods with the doctor unconscious from ‘spearhead from space’
I do love that section of the Limited Editions too! I hope that suggestion for Season 7 does get used! Failing that I would love to see Jon in the hut with the TARDIS console from Inferno!
@@AdamMartyn would be cool yeh, but it would hav to be a shot from spearhead from space since its the only episode in the season with the police box prop, but since the interior is never seen it would prob be the hut from inferno when you open the doors in the box set
Weird that you ended up with season 10 discs on your 2nd edition s12 set. Honestly, if I was to get these collection box sets then it would be the standard editions, due to space. That being said though, I love my DVD collection! Great informative video :)
Great video I have the limited edition ones but the standard ones are a welcomed thing to people who dont have them and they were the bane of my life for a time but I managed to track them all down at a reasonable price the most expensive one I had to pay was about £80 which is still expensive but cheeper compared to what other people paid for them
I like getting a mixture the only limited edition one I’ve got is the first adventures of the Seventh Doctor. I’ve only got the standard edition of Season 19.
If you want to see a specific season then you are put in the position of having to wait for the standard release or order the limited edition version on its release to avoid any delay.
I missed out on the special edition’s so im happy i could get the standard ones. Will be selling the special editions that i do have to fund the rereleases
I do like these new releases, especially for the folks who missed out in the beginning. I knew I would be on board for the blu-rays from when they were announced, as I was only maybe halfway into collecting the DVDs, so I'll be sticking to the limited edition ones. I can't see myself selling these 9 releases to pick up the same content, even if I would make my money back on the limited sets. As a personal gripe, I hate rating logos on my media, so I normally will end up getting steelbook editions and collector editions just to not have them on the spines. I know that one is a me thing though. Great video Adam!
Ive noticed here in the U.S. the have both versions but season 12 is listed as season 1 in the standard packaging and so on. So my question is are the Tom bakers years going to be sold as 1 through 7???
the limited ones are just way too difficult to get. i wish they hadn't made them so limited, i don't really see the reason why, if they were just going to bring out the regular ones. when i complete my dvd collection, i think i might move onto these, though!

The new plastic packaging is the way forward, because, over time, the glue holding the plastic trays in the cardboard limited edition sets becomes unstuck, the sellotape holding the trays together becomes unstuck and the glue holding the cardboard together becomes unstuck.
I'll finally be able to get season 10, 18 and 19 as I Don't want to pay silly prices on Ebay and it makes me less nervous about missing out on the limited edition sets if they do continue with the range
Those are brilliant reasons for getting these sets! I'm ultimately glad there is a standard edition alternative, as now it hopefully means everyone will get the chance to experience the Classic Series in the best way possible! 😁

Then too they were limitted edtions, in some cases very limitted, so there was no opportunity to wait for sales as they got bought up really fast and after that, there was no way to own a complete set except paying extortionate prices on the secondary market. I always thought they'd re-release them anyway - I really despise the whole "limitted edition" marketting hook. The new sets are almost as vidually attractive, they're very compact and they'll be much cheaper. I'll get them at some point. But there was always the alternative of just getting the US releases, which were never anything but unlimitted, and they always came in the standard bluray plastic case. On top of that, that fancy packaging is actually quite flimsy and I strongly susperct it will start to fall apart and show signs of wear after just a few viewings. The standard edition is much more robust.

Not really. With the DVDs you could only purchase one serial at a time. Good prices on those when they were available were around $25. But many of those sets have now gone OOP and were selling for as much as $60 per set (or more!) prior to these Blu-ray releases. With the Blu-rays you’re getting upgraded video and audio (and in some cases even upgraded CGI effects); the same voluminous extras that were on the DVDs; plus new Blu-ray exclusive extras. And, oh yeah, five or six serials as part of the complete season! These sets actually represent the best bargains classic Doctor Who collectors have ever had!!
@@lovetheblue6659 DVDs aren't OOP for me, as I live in the UK. Here, you can most of the DVDs cheap if you get them "Used, Very Good" condition. Most of the seasons' would be under £20 if you bought them this way. Also, I thought that the non- limited edition sets were supposed to be cheaper when they've only been reduced by like £5-£8. Sets must be worth it if you don't live in the UK though :)
So were the DVD's if you bought them in year of release and new. The retail price was £20 and that was just for a single story. The blurays are around £40 for a whole season. That;s a lot of episodes in the Pertwee and early Tom Baker ones!

You should swap your S12 discs over so you have the correct ones in your limited edition set

That would annoy the hell out of me to have the big sets for everything but 12 and 19. It looks so awkward to have smaller cases next to bigger ones.
