This classic song from 1969 originally made its appearance in the movie "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" where it won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. B.J. Thomas did the original recording which I am partial to, but many other vocal artists have recorded it since then. Billboard Magazine ranked this song at number 15 in its Top 50 Movie Songs of All Time in 2014, and it was also inducted into the 2014 Grammy Hall of Fame. This song has been used in many movies and TV shows including: Spy Hard, Spiderman 2, The In-Laws, Forrest Gump, The Simpsons, and many others.
The lyrics were composed by Hal David and the music by Burt Bacharach, who has won many awards through the years for his creative talent. This masterful arrangement for piano is by Mark Hayes. Mark Hayes is one of my favorite arrangers of all time. He specializes in Sacred music, but has also done a wonderful collection of "Film Classics" for advanced piano in the Alfred's Popular Performer Series. --Norma

Performed on a Bosendorfer 7'4" Concert Grand Piano (225SP) by Norma Meis
LYRICS
Raindrops are falling on my head
And just like the guy whose feet
Are too big for his bed
Nothing seems to fit
Those raindrops
Are falling on my head
They keep falling.
So I just did me some
Talking to the sun
And I said I didn't like the way
He got things done
Sleeping on the job
Those raindrops
Are falling on my head
They keep fallin'
But there's one thing I know
The blues they send to meet me
Won't defeat me, it won't be long
Till happiness
Steps up to greet me
Raindrops keep falling on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes
Will soon be turning red
Crying's not for me 'cause,
I'm never gonna stop the rain
By complaining,
Because I'm free
Nothing's worrying me
It won't be long
Till happiness
Steps up to greet me
Raindrops keep falling on my head
But that doesn't mean my eyes
Will soon be turning red
Crying's not for me cause,
I'm never gonna stop the rain
By complaining,
Because I'm free, 'cause nothing's worrying me
I love your piano playing, I am 74 years old and have been working through the ALFRED ADULT PIANO BOOKS, I am on book 3 at the moment and enjoying every minute. I have watched many of your videos and find them very useful. Thank you
You are very welcome! And thank you for the kind words. I'm so glad that you have found the videos useful in your piano journey! Currently, my oldest piano student is 75 and is on her last song in the Adult Level 3 book, so you are in very good company! --Norma
You’ll get to learn this song in the piano when you fix this DAMN DOOR!!!

Thank you so much for your kind words!! I'm so glad that you are finding the videos helpful in your musical journey. This song is a wonderful goal! --Norma
Beautiful! This song makes me sad, I don't know why. Apparently the nostalgia in it.
I am glad you noted that this is part of a Mark Hayes collection. I have about 10 of his books and I hope he will do some more arrangements of pop songs like this one.

Another listen...paying attention to the long-short notes as I am attempting to learn this technique for Alfred's Adult 3 Jazz Obstinate in C#Minor. Your ending in the piece is beautiful so gentle so caring.
Thank you so much! Yes, this song is a great one for listening to that long/short rhythm especially compared to even triplet eighths. Norma
Another listen. Thanks for your performance.
You are very welcome! Thanks for listening and commenting again. I was particularly pleased with this recording. The end result was the tempo that I wanted. NM

The quality of sound from the bosendorfer comes through even on the recording. Wow.
Fabulous! And it is even better in person, that beautiful tone just resonates throughout the room....actually the whole house. :) Amazing instrument! Love it! --Norma

Wow just stumbled on this & your channel. As a newbie student (in my 60's) I'm in awe at your polished version here. I've got a long journey ahead and examples like this serve to inspire. I'll be off to your Alfred's Basic Adult book 1 to look 'n' learn as that's part of my learning materials. Thanks for your works!
Great to know that you are out there. Thank you for listening and commenting! I would love to see more newbies in their 60's playing the piano. There are so many, many benefits for us all mentally, emotionally, and physically. Currently my oldest piano student is 72 and she started 5 years ago. You are in good company. Enjoy the musical journey and be patient with the process! NM
DavetheIV you go Dave!!!
I'm so glad to have read this comment :D I started lessons about five months ago at seventeen and I felt as if I was so old. It is funny because when I am at my teachers house for lessons her younger students ( 7/8 years old) come in and are sure to let me know how they already played the stuff I'm playing and that they are only 8 haha :) They are funny even if they make me feel embarrassed sometimes.
Bravo! 2019!
Thank you! --Norma
Wow...
That’s all I have to say. Learning this for my dad.
Thank you so much! It's a challenging but super fun song with the combo of swing 1/8ths and triplets. I'm sure your dad will enjoy it! --Norma

Great! Please send me the link when he learns the song and uploads it to UA-cam. Enjoy! Norma

I don't think there is an ebook version of this music, but Sheet Music Plus ships all over the world. If you click on the flag in the upper right of their website, you can see if your country is represented there. Norma

This is your best to date! Awesome. Beautiful. Thanks for working hard and publishing this piece. I enjoyed reading the background information. How many key changes?
Thank you!! "Best to date"...that means I'm improving and have made some progress. Yay!! I found the history of this song quite interesting too. I knew it was popular but didn't realize how much until I researched it. Key changes: it starts in the key of F and then "modulates" to the key of G on the last page. Quite easy key signatures but it is the note patterns in this one that are a challenge and also some rhythmic issues with the changes that are notated between even 8ths and swing 8ths and then the addition of triplets here and there, but that's what makes this a fun and interesting arrangement. Glad you enjoyed it! NM
I will go to my Grove dictionary and look up 8ths and swing 8ths - a new term for me. I did notice the rhythmic changes. Love this song. I just want to get up and go out and ride my bicycle!
Oh, what is the is the five finger thrill called?
"Swing 8ths" are basically a "long-short" rhythm that is almost like a dotted eighth with a sixteenth note. It is often appropriate with jazz music but is typically not employed in the ragtime category. NM
You could possibly be referring to the 3rd page where there are 32nd notes written with a "10" underneath which means they have to fit in one count which makes them sound more like a very fast arpeggio or maybe you are talking about the 4th page where there is a group of 16th notes with a "6" written underneath which also have to fit into one count. If I'm not on the right track, please clarify further. NM
A bosendorfer sells for $65,000 ? Or so? What do you see is the main advantage of having one? I don’t see an advantage to 4 extra keys, but what do they do differently that makes the sound so great?
I personally love the tone and feel of a Bosendorfer. When I sat down and played this one in a store in California, I immediately LOVED it!! I then continued around the store playing all kinds of different brands and kept coming back to this one. I rarely use the 4 extra keys, but what they do provide is the extra resonance of those notes to the overall sound when you have the damper pedal depressed. There is a richness there that adds tremendously to the bass in my opinion. Because as you know, when one string vibrates, the other strings will vibrate as well in sympathetic reverberation. Playing the piano is a very tactile experience as well, especially when you spend many hours there, and recently I had the opportunity to play about 15 different pianos and they just didn't "feel right". When it comes to piano brands, it truly is a matter of personal preference since we each have a particular sound or feel that we like. For me personally, I prefer my Bosendorfer over any Steinway that I've played which would be at a comparable price point. But I'm sure that others would beg to differ and will soon be chiming in to vote for their favorite brand or model. --Norma
How do you like the arrangement of Evergreen in that same Popular Performer Film Classics
book by Mark Hayes? Have you tried it out?
I haven't played that arrangement of Evergreen yet. I'll have to take a look at it. I'm currently working on "The Rainbow Connection" from that book and really enjoying it! Super fun with the swing 8ths, even 8ths, and triplets. --Norma
Dear Norma, A request: My native language is not English, but I fell in love with this song in college, first from the movie, and then after listening to the Frank Pourcel orchestra of this song. Now, at 68 years of age, in my retirement, I finally dared to sing it from the BJ Thomas version and recorded my voice in a home laptop. I need some music as accompaniment. Can I use your piece? I may eventually post it on YT, but purely for entertainment, no monetization or business, and in that case, I will surely acknowledge you. Thanks a lot.
Yes, absolutely please do. So glad that I could provide some piano accompaniment for your vocals. Thank you for asking and letting me know. Aloha from Hawaii! --Norma
Do you think learning this piece is possible after completing alfreds all in one book 3 or will I need more practice learning this?
This song is considerably more difficult than the Alfred's Adult Level 3 book. When you finish the Alfred's Level 3 book, you would be in the "Intermediate" category. This song is in the "Advanced" category. I would recommend working on some other pieces first before learning this one. --Norma
@@92pianokeys40 thank you
음..??눈에서 물이 나오네..?
norma, do you reckon you could you could play this after finishing Alfred Book 3? Or is there any other material you probably need to learn.
I think this song would be quite challenging after finishing the Alfred's Adult Level 3. Upon completing the Alfred's Adult series you will be a solid "Intermediate", about Level 5-6 (on a scale from 1-10). This song is from a collection of arrangements by Mark Hayes which are considered "Advanced". I would place them at about Level 8-9. --Norma
And in response to "what's next" after the Alfred's Adult Level 3 book. Here are some ideas:
There are many different books and sheets that I use when a student is at the intermediate level depending on their tastes and preferences.
In the Classical category: Alfred's Masterwork Classics Levels 1 - 10, Essential Piano Repertoire edited by Keith Snell Levels 1 - 10, (In each of these series you could probably start at about level 4.)
In the Jazz category: Jazz, Rags & Blues by Martha Mier Books 1 - 5 (could start about book 2-3), Especially in Jazzy Style by Dennis Alexander Books 1 - 3 (could start in book 2).
Both Martha Mier and Dennis Alexander have nice series of more lyrical compositions that they call "In Romantic Style" or "Romantic Impressions" or "Especially in Romantic Style" with several books in each set. (could start in book 2)
In the Pop/Movie/Broadway category: Alfred's Greatest Hits Level 3 (in their Adult series) offers some very good arrangements.
In the Sacred category: Alfred's Sacred Performer series, many great books to choose from, look for those that have the Intermediate label.
For Technique: Alfred's Technical Skills Levels 1 - 10 (could start about Level 4), "Burgmuller, Czerny & Hanon" edited by Ingrid Jacobson (start in book 1).
And that's a very brief offering of some of the books that I use with students. There is so much excellent music and resources available to us now, the options are endless, but that should give you a starting point for some to consider. Those books are available from Amazon.com and SheetMusicPlus.com and often will show preview pages. I do not have a sheet music store on my island so I have to rely on the internet for purchasing music. Also, I do digital downloads from MusicNotes.com and SheetMusicPlus.com when I'm looking for a specific song.
There are some videos on my You Tube Channel from "Masterwork Classics", "Essential Piano Repertoire", "Jazz, Rags, & Blues", and "Alfred's Greatest Hits" to give you an idea of some of those. They are easy to find through the "playlist" option.
You could also browse through my "Intermediate" and "Late-Intermediate" playlists for ideas as well.
Hope that helps as you continue your musical journey and please let me know if you find some great books or single sheets that you particularly enjoy. --Norma

@@popcornchat766 Beautifully played by Stanislav!! I really like his style - expressive, effortless, always a pleasure to listen to. I've watched some of his videos before. I would estimate that piece at about a "Late-Intermediate" "Early-Advanced" Level 7-8. --Norma

@@92pianokeys40 thank you so much for your reply, is it possible to get these notes from you in the form of a photo or in another way? I'm sorry if I'm making it difficult
By the way how long do you play the piano?
@@user-jm9rk7dr4r I'm so sorry but because of the copyright restrictions in the United States, it would be illegal for me to send it to you in any form. The only way that the composer/arranger gets paid for their work is through the sale of the music.
I started taking piano lessons when I was 7 years old, so I have been playing for many years now.
@@92pianokeys40 Too bad, I think that the electronic version will not appear only because in this case it will be easier to make a piracy distribution, many thanks for the time you gave me, I wish you success in your work and in life,

Would it be ok if I used this audio as background music for my videos if I link to this video onscreen at the end of the video?
Yes, you have my permission to do so, thank you for asking! I believe that it's okay with copyright laws, but it might get flagged if you're trying to get monetary compensation for your videos, I'm not sure?? It gets a bit confusing with "cover" audio/videos.
