I live on a boat, so my stash has to be crammed into lots of weird nooks and crannies. About 1/4 of it lives right now in bins stacked on the counter in the guest bathroom. A roll of batting lives in the guest shower! Stash is higher priority than guests right now 😂

Living on a boat means you get to make up ALL of your own rules with not guilt at all!! (I love water!)

Under my bed. But only the ones that have fabric with a specific pattern and they are wrapped in butcher paper to keep them all together. Just fabric is in tubs under my quilt frame and I only have to move them when I get to that section of my quilt.

Thank you for telling us that it’s no one’s business how much fabric we have. My husband says if bills are paid, groceries bought he doesn’t care how much fabric I bought. It saddens me when I hear women talk about sneaking in fabric so their husbands don’t know they have more fabric.

Knitters have the same problem. I married a non-handy, non-mechanically inclined, pencil pusher, and he never saw the value and NEED for yarns and knitting. We are divorced now, and I knit HAPPILY and am just now getting back into quilting. (Obviously other issues than my craft habits, but it was indeed another nail in the coffin in general - the lack of support and respect.) Divorced and free for 6 years now, and never been happier. :)

Wow I love your low volume stash! I buy mostly remnants and there are so few low volume remnants that my stash is mostly empty of them. Planning to try some dye stamping on white and cream fabrics to create some low volumes to be friends with my chosen fabrics for an upcoming quilt. Fingers crossed!

I’m proud that I have only a very small stash. Having extra fabric feels like pressure to use it up and causes me stress. I love that we are at opposite ends of the stash spectrum. 😁❤️ Do what makes you happy. Also, can I shop at your house? 😂

I'm on your page, joogle3328. My stash is very small. I only have what I am going to work on next. These days, fabric is getting very expensive, plus shipping unless you buy a certain amount. There is no quilt shop near me so I always have to buy online. This youtuber's stash kinda makes me dizzy.

Your stash is GREAT! I love your cabinets. I used to store my fabric in bins and kind of on shelves but it was a mess & it stressed me out. I took 2 weeks and pulled all fabric out, sorted by color, assigned a SKU (blu1, blu2) and wrote it in the selvedge. My husband added shelves to the guest closet behind bi-fold. Pieces greater than 1.25yds goes on a top shelf, 1/8 up to 1.25yd on the middle shelf, themes on the lower shelf. As I finish a project, I log it on my spreadsheet, which fabric I used for which project. It really helps if I remember a fabric I want to use but don't remember if I have any.
Anything smaller than 1/8yd but too big to cut into a scrap square or rectangle, goes in a bin labeled "chunky scraps." As I finish a project and have small pieces they are cut into squares & rectangles up to 3.5". I have found that, other than 2.5" for bindings, I don't use strips so I've gradually used them up & don't cut more.
I take "inventory" every year or so, like you, so I can play with my fabric and re-sort. I can see how much fabric I used each year & it's a good feeling. Everyone needs to find a system that works for them but for me, I need to be organized or I just can't sew. ;)

Wow. Such a beautiful stash!. So well organized! So useful this way. I bet you could make a 1,000 quilts without going out to buy more fabric.
I love in Canada, so buying any kinda yardage is just impossible on a fixed income. I buy mostly 100% cotton men's shirts for the fabric. Now I need a good source for thread and batting and backing. I do look at blankets n sheets at thrift stores. And I look at wool coats for harvesting that. I might be a throwback pioneer.

      @merrymabelmarket  8 місяців тому +1

That is a GORGEOUS stash ma'am. I wish you were my quilter friend. Clutter makes me nervous so I'm very careful with what I buy and bring into the house. I do the comic cardboard, but do not use pins or clips, they are vertically “book stored” and keep intact when I am auditioning and easy to replace back on the shelf. Then, … since I was a science major all my batiks are ROY-G-BIV placed on my shelving. I Then have several sections, a Kaffe section and my florals. This is followed by the polka dot, then the stripes. Grunge, the plain background unique solids get a section. Then the oddballs that you talked about, animals, geometric prints, coffee, food, juvenile. I have a large stash so my up coming projects, next to do…. are stored on their own shelf with a ribbon tie and the pattern, a grab and go!!! I need to see my stuff so I can adjust my fabric choices should I need to. I am very fussy on my fabric selection, so I normally purchase 2-3 yards of each. The whites and blacks are in a Elfa type bin next to the workbench so I can easily audition. My sewing room was made for me when I purchased my home 10 years ago. I totally outgrew it 8 years ago. My system works for me, and when people visit my home the sewing room is usually an eye popper. My friends are not quilters, they look at me with disbelief…..they say it is pretty, but they are gobsmacked.😳

I store yardage the same behind closed doors. I use an acrylic 8" wide long ruler and wrap it around it much like you would wrap a bolt and then pull out the ruler and fold it in half and align in in stacks by color on the shelf. This makes every piece precisely the same size and the only time I refold them is if I use part of it.

When people find out I quilt, mystery bags show up on my porch. )))) I sort them into color bins, Mostly red, mostly blue, mostly whatever. Any size and shape, color, texture... one general color per bin.Quilts come from total random or single color ways, or grouped colors that "go together". Backs on the shelf. Fluff in bags in closets. ))))))

Love how you explained your logic for determining how you want to fold your fabrics. Most of mine are in “kits”, but I do have random yardage that I need to get out where I can actually SEE it… which is part of your presentation here. Thank you for sharing!! (Now I need to find some similar kind of shelving, maybe!)

I have 4 upright 30X72 cabinets. I use my 6X24 ruler to wrap my fabrics and then fold in half like you do. So, anything over 18 inches and under 4 yards get folded and stored that way. Anything over 4 yards gets folded 12X22 the folded in half. There is a drawer in the middle of the cabinets and my FT's and half yard pieces get folded and stored in there. I have 2 scrap bins. That's it. My local quilt shop has a scrap box for pieces to be cut up for dog beds for rescue dogs, any batting or fabric scraps 2 inches and less get donated to the box. Larger pieces that I don't want any more, get donated to the scrap bin for other quilters to buy for $5 a bag. I don't cut my scraps into sizes, not a big fan of scrappy quilts.
I make at least one pillowcase per quilt, depending on size to store it in. So, I use up alot of fabric that way. I chose the closed cabinets because I have 2 windows in my sewing room and I noticed that some of them started to fade on the fold line when I used bookcases. They are of course, organized by color and mine are all labeled with the amount and where and when I bought then, whenever possible. I got tired of pulling out a piece only to fine it was not enough.

I have 7 metal shelves like you do, loaded with fabric. Mine are also sorted. I actually use cardboard pieces and fold my fabric similar to what you find in the stores. Some "boards" are @6" wide and some @3" . If I have more than a couple of yards, I actually have a cardboard piece that is the same size as actual bolt cardboard. It's amazing how well it works. And I can see all my fabrics basically at a glance.

I don’t know where you’re located but I’m north of a textile district and my hometown has F&M fabrics. I can get lost in there. Thank you for the organizing tips. I’ve got everything piled on my cutting table now and am organizing all my shelves. Should be done in about 3 months. 😂😂😂❤fabric. Not necessarily funny but I rented a storage unit to store extra. 😬 I finally decided that it was too much and have spent the last 4 years on a no/low buying sabbatical. It worked.

I have probably the same amount as you have and still I always need some color to match something. I definitely have problems with browns and oranges! I think because I started out using those colors for fall and it didn’t sell well so it turned me off. I probably have one or 2 browns and maybe 6-8 oranges. I also don’t see great options of these colors in the stores.
