  • Costa de Antigua / Nuevo Horizonte - What is it like?
    I went to Costa de Antigua, formerly Nuevo Horizonte, with the intention of making a "What's it like" video showing it in as positive light as possible. Unfortunately it didn't turn out like that.
    The more I walked around, the harder it was to find anything nice to film or anything good to say about it, which is a There are some unfinished projects and even more completed apartment and villa complexes that are totally empty. It is also a shame that its greatest asset, the coastline, is spoilt by the ugly, disused lido, the empty villas and there not being anywhere to sit and have a coffee or a drink and look at the sea.
    There is no beach in Costa Antigua. There are two hotels there, the Elba Lucia Sport and Suite Hotel and the Globales Costa Tropical Fuerteventura Hotel.
    Although there isn't a great deal here, it is only a 10 to 15 minute walk along the coastal path to Caleta, where there are plenty of bars, restaurants etc.
    On a more positive note, I went into one of the bars for a coffee and asked the person behind the bar if she lived there. She said yes, so I asked her what the good things about living there were. She said three things "The people, as it is really friendly the cost, as it is very cheap to live there and finally, there is no stress." All good points but not easy to show in a video.
    I can see why people might live here as it is quiet and out of the way but I really see no attraction in staying here for a holiday when you consider the wonderful alternative resorts in Fuerteventura.

    My family have a villa here. There was supposed to be a waterpark constructed years ago but it all got scrapped in the Spanish construction crisis, which is a shame. That being said I love it here, it’s perfect for me and my partner to get away from busy city life here in England. It’s a home away from home, plenty of expats in the bars and restaurants, Bennys is a great place and Jinxing is still to this day the best Chinese food I’ve ever had.
    It’s certainly not a place for children or an adventure holiday but for peace and quiet I love it. Caleta is a 30min walk along the costal path, Caleta itself is a lot more vibrant with people, restaurants and a fantastic beach.

      I have no doubt that it is a quiet restful place to be. It is a shame that the construction crisis has left so many buildings on the island left unfinished, not just here. As you say, Caleta isn't far to walk if you want more but I have to disagree with you about the beach. To me Caleta has the worst beach on the island, in fact it isn't a beach at all, it is a beach themed area by the sea. Man-made and with everything that spoils a beach for me - rows of sunbeds, umbrellas, showers etc. But each to their own. Thanks for watching Andy.

    That's a superb video, John, not only informative (and accurate!), but beautifully shot and edited. We actually visit Costa Antigua four or five times a week to play tennis at the Elba Lucia, and post-match drinks at Benny's bar next to the (excellent) Chinese restaurant in your vid. What always strikes us is the friendliness of the hotel staff and locals, and the easy, relaxed atmosphere of the place. It does, though, make one's blood boil to see what the pig-headed attitude of the banks has done to what could be such a great little place. Most of the stalled residential developments were repossessed by the banks during the crash, who are holding them on their books at pre-crash values. If they sell at true current value, they make a loss and have to settle tax bills...so they just sit on them until the market come back up, which is just about starting to happen. Of course, all of the uncompleted projects depress the local market, so it's self-defeating. It's starting to change, slowly, but some places will have to be demolished, such as the infamous Lido, built at the height of the property boom without proper permission/regs! Siempre lo mismo, as they say in these parts!

    I love Nuevo Horizonte. People are very friendly and easy to get to know, and its peaceful there. A few bars and restaurants. Short walk over the fields to the supermarked Mercadona, a few other shops and a nice bakery. And the lovely coast road to Caleta. I usually go by bike.

    JP - Good video and balanced view, its interesting that in Summer 2019 some of the villas opposite Gloables Costa Tropical have finally become occupied, also I note remedial works have taken place on the sea view front line villas although they remain empty.
    It would be great to see the Authorities seize the unfinished properties after a period of tome irrespective of land or bank rights and either see them raised to the ground and landscape restored or handed over for completion companies of financial standing, however I guess the demand is not there, if it ever really existed.
    Costa Antigua has some great communities and an international mix, great bus links and a mixture or retirement, workers, families and is ideally placed to visit many places on the island, the success of several habitations is growing the area is improving over time, thanks to its residents...

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  4 роки тому

      No-one wants to pay to demolish them. It is cheaper to buy a virgin building plot (of which there are many) and build on that. It is annoying to see that whole development of apartments empty when there is such a high demand for rental properties here. Thanks for watching and your comments David.

    Totally salute how real you're being John, in pointing-up the island's issue with unfinished projects etc. I was recently there and the cumulative effect of seeing all the unfinished and empty complexes does have a bearing on one's opinion of the island. The reasons behind it, well who can say but from what I've seen, out of all the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is probably the worst for this. I like the irony of the tourist plane overhead dumping yet more visitors (not in itself a bad thing; but they don't see or have to live amongst the empty projects). Often as well, complexes that have been finished look-out on the empty lots which you can tell were ear-marked for developments that have never even started, and this too is a blight.
    Great drama in the last shot; plane taking off and heat haze all around it!

    Went to the lido a couple of times mid 90`s with my boys it was enjoyable but not many people then next year it was closed. A few years later did the walk from Caleta met o few O.A.P.`s who were renting very cheaply, were very happy with life, a lot better than a rented house in the UK. And one had found the health service superb they even did English food for him in hospital.

    Goldacre once told me, this area,, will be the next best thing, with huge plans for area, and property cheap. I must admit, the hundreds of abandoned empty built properties, does leave a bad taste, on the area. Like Caleta de fuste, definitely not impressed me. Although if the government was organised, i might be tempted, knowing it will be done. For sea view , Agua verde i hear , has amazing sea views and cheap prices. 98% german but definitely amazing views. Overall, very happy with Tamarindo in Corralejo.. Well presented John, I am a newcomer to this site but a bit of an old boy as far as Fuerteventura is concerned, I have stayed at the Costa Tropical about 14 times over the years so I am very familiar with this part of this Island. In Costa Antigua there is a lot of property that has been repossessed by the banks which won't be released because of the declining property market. Last year I was told that some of the town house which were built by a Portuguese company were being released for sale at around 90,000 euros, about half of the original asking price but I don;t know if that has happened.The partly built hotel you show was constructed again by a Portuguese company and was built illegally because of the the number of floor levels I am told. Looking forward to watching a few more of your videos. How about Pajara and Ajuy both well worth a visit. Ray

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  5 років тому

      Well the current exchange rate is £1=1.12€ which is exactly the rate we got when we bought our house 6 years ago and when we bought our apartment 10.5 years ago we only got 1.08. People like to blame everything on Brexit but forget that the exchange rates have fluctuated in the past too. Mind you I have never been lucky with money. If I announced I was selling up and going back to the UK then tomorrow the rate would go up to 2 Euros to the Pound. Long term rental isn't easy at the moment unfortunately. That depends on what you mean by decent. Caleta de Fuste beaches (two of them) are about 15 minutes walk along the coastal path but they are both man-made so I would describe them as beach themed areas. Many people love them but personally I only like natural beaches and there are many beautiful examples of those in the north and the south of the island but you would need a hire car to get to those. There were big plans for the place but like so many things they disappeared with the recession. Thanks for watching.

    Being an aircraft enthusiast I would probably like it there. My other half not. Loved the music JP

      From that point of view, me too. I grew up just a few miles from Heathrow so spent half my youth by the runway. Thanks for watching.

      It does seem to be improving. Many of the empty blocks have now been sold so it looks less empty. Kai bought one a few years ago - here is his video ua-cam.com/video/qIlRJWG6rFI/v-deo.html

    What a shame about the empty villas - they should sell them cheap :)

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  6 років тому

      I suspect they are owned by the banks who won't sell them for less than they are owed on them, which will be more than they are actually worth at the moment. It is a shame. Thanks for watching Dave.

    Are there any really good bargains to be had out there JP?

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  6 років тому +1

      Well there are certainly some cheap properties for sale in Costa de Antigua (and Parque Holandes) but whether that makes them a bargain or not is a matter of opinion. Cheap isn't always good value. Generally on the island many of the bargain bank repossessions have gone, although some do crop up from time to time. Thanks for watching Lee.

      No Julie. The nearest are the two beaches in Caleta, if you call those beaches.

    Do you ever see squatters in these unoccupied buildings??

    • @JPinFuerteventura
      @JPinFuerteventura  6 років тому

      Squatters are becoming more of a problem on the island. If you have watched this video of my local dog walk, where I show two empty villas, they are both now occupied by squatters - ua-cam.com/video/yl9To8Srje8/v-deo.html Ridiculously they have lots of rights so are hard to get rid of although a new law has just been brought in to make it a bit easier and quicker but you can't just go in and throw them out, which you should be able to. It is the same in the UK too.

      Yes. Fortunately at least some of the empty apartment blocks are now occupied.
