I suppose I took my first step to beat a dragon today. I've been in a slump thinking everything I knit is so simple and everytime I try to remember how brave I was in the beginning of my knitting journey I now get stopped by fear of messing it up. So I'm jumping into the bottom up sweater construction as soon as my yarn gets here. I went to my local yarn store today to get some needles and they had the Weekender pullover by Andrea Mowry there in a sample. I'd always loved that pattern but it was bottom up. As I was admiring it the shopkeeper asked if I wanted to try it on. Really? I can do that? So into the bathroom I went and I pulled it on and it fit like a glove. So I bought the same yarn she used and took some notes on the size and measurements of the sample and I've been dreaming all afternoon about it with such excitement. However they didn't have enough yarn in stock so she ordered it for me and will be here in a couple of weeks which is fine... but just to feel the excitement today and the "can do" attitude that came over me was as you say... heart jumping.
If you do the crochet bind-off on the wrong side (working on the inside of the sleeve or sweater), the crochet chain will not show on the right side and it will look as if you bound off in pattern.
"Heart-jumping" is such a wonderful expression! Thank you for inventing such a term and helping us feel it, too! As to The Dragons: we say, in English, that we slay our dragons...and to slay a dragon brings visions of the heroes of fairy tales, and all that saved The Fair Princess! I'm all for slaying dragons...but when I need to give my sword a rest, I tune in to your podcast!
I do hope, selfishly, that you slay the dragon that keeps you from taking us with you through your neighborhood and town. I so enjoy seeing other places in the world! I am in California, USA. Several years ago I traveled to Bruges, Belgium, while there we rode our bikes into the Netherlands, Sluis was the town. It is one of my favorite memories. Such a beautiful part of the world! I too, need to slay the dragon of having to much yarn! Thank you for such a lovely podcast!
I am always more creative when I have to use what I have - yarn, fabrics, patterns, tools…It is interesting that too many choices (belongings) can lead to overwhelm and restlessness. My goal for this year, is that everything I knit and sew, must start with materials I already have. I also have to think about what I need. Many things are fun to knit, but if you don’t use the finished garments, it is time and money wasted. You have to beat those dragons 🐉! Thank you for a nice episode, Sarah! Please take us with you on another bike ride 😊
I like it when you filmed in the wild! It will be fun to watch you beat that dragon. ❤ I also love your knitting office 😂 and your living room. Oh- let’s not forget your camper! Thanks for showing so much of your life!
Another lovely podcast, Sarah. I say thank you to Lucy also for inspiring my crochet! Loved the discussion of slaying dragons and thinking about it at this time. I want to finally let go of a bunch of sewing materials as I am not sewing any longer. I am also trying to use up my stash but have also collected some more yarns. I also have a few sweaters that I didn’t finish and I want to get those done. 😊❤
Yup! You don't need to weave in the ends on your steek. Which is why cardigans are great -- you don't have to weave in the ends! Woohoo! Love your sock cardigan -- colors are perfect. The blanket is gorgeous too. I need to practice my crochet, but knitting always takes over for me. Ah well! Love your podcast! I usually don't comment.....
My dragon is beating breast cancer dragons. I want to have energy and beat the energy dragon. I want to beat the project dragon and Finnish them. This is a start Sarah. You...young lady make my heart jump!❤❤❤❤❤
I could listen to you all day Sarah. My heart jumps often, so thank you. This feeds my dragon beating journey. I love the toddler sweater. The colors will certainly hide whatever she gets into. You are quite thoughtful in your projects and gifts. Be well.😊
You are so cute and carry yourself so sweetly, that you could "beat" any dragon you set your mind to! My goodness, you get lots of projects done. Don't be too hard on yourself. I just love love your sock cardigan...the colors are lovely!!!! ❤❤
Well.... Sarah, it seems to see me when I look at your videos. I share lots of your thoughts... I am 40, I have 3 kids and 2 of them are Waldorf students. I am a knitter and a crocheter even though I am not as good as you are! Very compliments! I struggled with my "having too much" too, but the temptation of making new projects is very strong and I do try to limit my purchases. I write you from Italy so excuse my Italian English... Ah ah! I like your videos really much! Your so funny! Goodbye from an Italian Knitter! 😘
Love the Harbour blanket. I think I will use that pattern to make for my daughter’s first baby. Thank you for your lesson on Beating The Dragon. Love that idea. ❤
This Dragon Talk is so inspiring! Thank you so much!! I always felt that my creation (knitting-chereting-painting-sewing-embroidering) is my safe zone in life. However, in the same time i used to judge myself that the result is too boring (no, it is not) and i know it is a way of me not accepting myself. So, yes, i think beating a dragon thru creation is very clever. It lets you reflect and handle it thru a very cozy and safe part of your life, then reflects on the rest of your life. VERY INSPIRING
Hello. Dis was n lieflike naweek saam met jou. I kept a few episode aside to watch them this weekend and if really filled me. Thank you for sharing your handewerk and taking us on the walk . Ha beautiful week to you. Mechele from Happy Ever Yarn podcaset.
Sarah,,, Love the blanket,,, Love e attic 24 ,lucy and her blog,, Have a few of her blankets made,,,and love them,, And to use up tarts,,wool and mixed,,, Thanks, Elaine 🏡💖
I so relate to your dragons in life. I had a good friend who was an EXCELLENT knitter and I was just beginning. I would ask her if she thought I could do certain patterns and she would always say no. I would feel awful afterwards and incompetent. Much later I found out (as you say) that I can knit or crochet anything, I just have to try. My big dragon this year is also an over abundance of yarn and notions.
My kids attended Waldorf schools as well. They’re all adults now, but I miss those Waldorf school days! Love the Dragon story. Thank you for reminding me and sharing!
I do so enjoy your podcast and love the part of your personality that doesn't need to be perfect and reminds me of the same. re: stash i learned an acronym SABLE: Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy. It fits for my stash/life. Your personality is a breath of fresh air for me. Carry on!!
Claudine Powley is bringing out a book called modern granny stitch crochet that looks right up your street! I saw it advertised today and thought of you 😊
Great video! The blanket is beautiful. I love the colors you choose on all your projects...you have lovely taste great creativity. Thanks for sharing it.
My dragon is wanting to knit all things , getting different yarns to make them, and not having enough time to knit them. Hopefully, I'll acquire yarn to make some of the projects I really want and making time to do them. Love your crochet blanket
Happy weekend! Love the blanket and yes, I also find that sometimes casting on a new, small project is the cleanser (or refreshment) that I needed to get me feeling motivated to return to the longer-term projects. I love knitting small children's items, I just need some to knit or crochet for! I too have found myself collecting patterns at a rate that I find is increasing a bit faster than I think is best for me. So I am going to consider that one for a bit and see if I can slay it (or it least tame it). I am sure there are others so you have given me something to reflect on while I knit/crochet (and scrub the toilets 😉...tomorrow is cleaning day).
Thank you for a lovely episode, I also am trying to get through my stash - I have yarn and fabric! And I find I can go quite a while not buying them but I do struggle not buying patterns, my dragon is getting caught up in the latest pattern on the internet and buying it, then I store it on my iPad and often I don’t ever make it up and I have so many and they are in such a muddle that I forget what I have! So this year my dragon is no more patterns, check the ones I’ve got and use them even if I have to adapt them. Time on internet also feeds that dragon because I’m spending too much time getting inspiration but not having the time to actually do the making! I have cut back the people I follow (you are always on my list to watch!) and this helps me! This weekend I have been to a quilting event, a very small one so there wasn’t lots of temptation to buy buy it has given me lots of enthusiasm to get back to my fabrics and get stitching! It is so nice to talk to real people and share their heart jumping moments rather than watching on a screen! Thank you for another lovely episode and have a great weekend, walking and knitting in the woods! ❤
Love your mums blanket, Sarah. I feel the need for a bit of blanket crochet in my life too. One (and there’s quite a few) of my dragons, is over abundance as far as patterns and wool buying are concerned. My other, in the knitting area is, a dislike of swatching and I have just been caught out yet again, for not doing one! I’m just too impatient! Another dragon!😂. Always good to see you and hope you enjoyed your weekend with nature and knitting.❤
I think the ‘grootste draak’ that you beat was making podcasts for your English followers! (We had to read “Koning van Katoren” in highschool in South Africa as one of our books, that was in die late 80’s. So there you go Sarah, you beat the dragon!) I also love to use Attic24 patterns for my crochet blankets!
Loved the crochet bind off! I have a few dragons to slay. One of them I know is quite silly. I offered to darn a friend’s favorite socks that her son gifted her from Peru. (I have never darned socks before.) I bought this little weaving loom gadget to do the job but keep procrastinating for fear I will screw it up. I thought I should practice on some holey cotton socks to get the hang of it but I truly have built this thing into a monster. One advantage to my procrastination is that I just discovered the yarn I had chosen to darn with is too thick and one should always try to match the weight of yarn otherwise the sock will feel uncomfortable. Fall is on the horizon here in Coastal Georgia, U.S. so I must tackle it so she can start wearing them. I must learn to darn as one of my resolutions is to knit socks for my favorite people and to ask them to return them to me for darning. I am really bad about creating monsters!
i just like you and the way you think more and more. My children to the Waldorf school here in Norway. It is very nice. So Iknow what you are talking about. I will think about that more towards my life to. In crafting my dragons is in some way similar as you. Thank you for this great episode!!
I love knitting while watching your episodes. I’m making the Porty Cardigan by Gudrun Johnston. It would be a great pattern for that Shetland yarn you bought. For a colorwork cardigan, you don’t need to weave in your ends. I try to make sure they cross over the middle stitch to the opposite side and I catch them with stitching the reinforcement. With sock yarn, you might want to stitch two rows with your sewing machine since it’s not so sticky. I loved your explanation of dragons - we would say you are slaying your dragon.
My dragons are: not believing that I can knit some projects because they are too hard, struggle with food, beating stress. I love this idea of beating your dragons. Thank you for sharing your dragons with us.
I love listening as a Denver Colorado person who has visited the Netherlands. Such a lovely country and people. I really appreciate your life stories and mind set! My dragon to beat is to make and steek a cardigan 🫣. I will have a goal this year to do that.
Oh, something else! You don't have to use your sewing machine to steek. (Although for super wash, you probably should. So never mind for this cardigan, but) if you look up someone like Ysolda Teague steeks or Kate Davies steeks or steeks in general, you'll see the easiest way is to crochet two stitches together along both sides of the steek!! Easy peasy!
Hi Sarah, lovely to catch up with your handwork. Just like catching up with a friend❤❤❤ And for your Mum❤ oh, Sarah, I can see your cardigan also being a zipped hoodie! ❤
Hi Sarah, I like the blanket your mom have finished but even more, I love the (off)white bedspread your mom made for you. Do you have the pattern by chance or on which website can I find it? ❤
Love your story of your dragons. I have some dragons to conquer. In the US we are going into Fall or Autumn. This is the time of harvest. To gather all that has been grown and to prepare some of it for the winter months. But this year I will look at winter as conquering my dragons. Most of them are in the knitting realm. Lol. 🐉
Superwash yarn is not ideal for colour work, it will stretch with blocking and you may lose the pattern definition. I would recommend you using your sewing machine for the steek, it will hold the stitches for you, if you use 100% wool in colour work a Crochet edge works well. I would advise you watch a video on Steeking first.
Sunday morning with Sarah and my knitting - it is a perfect morning for me 😊
