  • An Alberta couple is in a big battle with the Canada Revenue Agency after receiving a repayment bill for benefits paid during COVID-19.
Ron and Daria Roffel told Global News they don’t believe they should have to pay back the $14,000 the CRA says is owed, which was given to them via the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB).
    Tomasia DaSilva reports.

If they weren't entitled to the money, then they should pay it back. No sympathy from me...those dollars that they received came (partially) from my wallet. There is absolutely no such thing as free government money, it's all taxpayer funded.

She was over the threshold. Do you really think CRA will forget? They go after the average citizen everyday because we can’t afford lawyers. But, she wasn’t entitled so, you have to pay it back.

Those of us running businesses under an incorporation were forced to shut down for 5 months while still paying rent and salaries yet there was no equivalent "CERB" option to cover expenses. That cost me $14K/mo for 5 months out of savings so I do not feel a tremendous amount of pity for anyone who tried to get more than their share. Anyone offering to top up my $70K loss?

I don't understand why we should feel bad for her?? She was making over the threshold. Most people who made over the threshold did not even apply for CERB because well they were not eligible. She used the money she was not entitled to 4 years ago and now is mad why she has to pay back??? She is lucky she wasn't fined.
Well next time I remember to apply for any free money the government gives whether I am eligible or not because it seems that's how people live, eat their cake and have it too

She was making just over $1000. Let's say that was $1200. $200 over the threshold would be a reasonable clawback making what she owed $1400 instead of $14000.
Also to the why should you care about a family potentially losing their house? If don't have empathy, unhomed people cost significantly more money for the government than $2000 a month.

Now they spend millions trying to get emergency funds back. Emergency funds are not meant to be given back. Swallow the loss and leave tax payers alone. @layne4376 nah they were well defined it was the payback part that wasn't. Like who would have to pay back and when. The loaning part was strict rules but their mistake was not fully checking the applications BEFORE handing out the $ . They screwed disabled people in this regard too. They gave them an extra $300. Which actually for the first time in a very long time allowed them to both pay bills and rent AND eat for the whole month. Then they took it all back. Then gave half back bc the rate for disability haven't been raised in YEARS . and it no longer meets the cost of living. Then right after that they raised the cost of living so much that sick ppl are now being forced to starve. Tell me how someone is supposed to survive on 1500 a month. But instead trudumbs response. Well here is $200 . U get next year. . And by then cost of living gone way up and left them screwed all over again...those are the ppl I feel sorry for. Still living with my father( 87years old) , I am working part time and I do everything I can to make his final years as comfortable as possible(just as I did for my mother). That money would have come in handy! It would have temporarily relieved the financial burden. That being said; being 14000 dollars in debt to CRA at 59 years of age with a small retirement amount did not make sense to me and would have robbed me of the precious time I have had with my parents. They were mass approving everyone, there was no vet process. Millions of people took CERB without being within the parameters outlined to take it. And now that the government has no money CRA is now in the process of recollecting. Problem is, of course, the damage has already been done economically - and hundreds of thousands of people wont be paying them back because they don't have the money to do so.
Like tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of homeless took CERB. They aren't getting that money back. This is partially why inflation got so out of control; mass printing money led to devaluation of it. No way to recollect means someone has to flip that bill, and it isn't going to be the poor or upper class, it will be the middle guy who will see it on increased prices of products and other taxes (carbon) for example. Also in part why drug addiction became so rampant over the last few years......
CRA Is going HARD right now on recollection - they are auditing left and right. Still can't force someone to pay who doesn't have the funds to pay - and someone has to flip that bill.

It was a Canada Emergency Benefit. Either way, they should have responsibly given it out best they could in the first place. This benefit should have been given out and the door shut on it. Only a Liberal government would spend millions more over years trying to get an Emergency Benefit back. As a tax payer I'm appalled.

So many people took advantage of these payments.
All the government is doing is taking returns and gst payments.
Frankly, I am glad to see the government going after people who took these benefits. A lot 9f people are crying they thought they qualified. Either you did or you did not. It's up to you to make sure you did, if not that's on you, you got thousands for nothing.
