The difference between painting over Black or White Primer on miniatures.

Check out some of the differences between painting over a black primed mini vs a white primed mini.

That clip at the beginning, that was me trying to paint some Cities of Sigmar infantry. I primed it in black, then got some flesh tone contrast paint, and was frustrated when it didn't look good.

They white is sprayed over black. Since it is in thin layers it is gray in a lot of the areas. The point you want the brightest spray again to make it more white/brighter. :)

Coming back to the hobby since painting miniatures in the early/mid 90s, I don’t understand why everybody is priming in black. It was always white back in the day, except when doing metallics where you’d paint those areas black before applying the metallic paint.
As I’m going to be painting classic late 80s / early 90s miniatures, I’ll be doing white primer just like we used to back in the day!

Yeah. Not sure why black primer became such a popular thing. I painted over black for years and it took me a LOT longer to paint some colors, lol.

I prime everything with a grey primer.

I use blue poster tack. The white doesn't work as well. The more you use it the tackier it gets too.

Why not Grey primer?

I like using black, then white, so some of the black shows through on the underside.
You can totally use grey primer if you like.

Many people go the extra step, and go grey primer. Then do black ink or primer from below, and white ink or primer from above. That creates a gradient where the top surfaces are lighter, the bottom is in the shadows, while the rest is a happy medium.
