Sonos' new soundbar is taking on the HomePod with Alexa

- Опубліковано 14 сер 2024
- The new Sonos Beam is a $399 soundbar that works over HDMI to provide sound for TVs and uses Alexa to become a smart speaker than can take on the Echo and the HomePod. Can the hybrid Sonos Beam convince consumers to upgrade?

Do you wish your soundbar had a smart assistant? - Dieter
Yes, but I would prefer the Google Assistant. Mainly because that's the only assistant that's coming to The Netherlands soon.
The JPL android Tv Soundbar, sounds great
Really wish in the future videos, you can beep the Alexa :/ thank you!
The Verge if it sounds better than the JBL and google home max than this will be the best option
Honestly, it's too expensive to sell as a competitive product to Alexa or Google Home.
Yes yes yes! The lady is 100% right in what she is saying about iOS and Android in the same household. This is pure awesomeness
yeah it's a big deal IMO. - Dieter
Agreed. I am tired of these walled gardens. She was right on in terms of being consumer friendly.
They had the right idea yet the only one you can talk to is Amazon Alexa
Please beep “Alexa” in the future videos! Thank you 🙏
Lately I've been trying to say " 'lexa " so it won't beep people. But I figured just once would be fun. It's hard to remember to just say 'lexa though! - Dieter
The Verge actually, I've found Lexa is the hot word.
Yes, please stop saying the keywords 🙏
Please! I didn't finish your review after the immortal words "Alexa, turn off the TV". Harmony took care of everything.
The Verge you thought it would be fun? I think it’s fun Unsubbing as well.
Your right once turned on to it you will buy more. I have a playbar, sub, beam, 5 play 1 , one in the office and a set each used for rear speakers for the beam on one tv and the playbar and sub on another tv., play3 in the kitchen which is used outside on the patio in the summer, and a play one with Alexa in the bedroom. I operate on iOS and this is about as easy a setup as you can get. I’m 68 years old and just sold my album collection because with iTunes and other services no need for it any longer. Plus the quality sound from these speakers when it comes to music is phenomenal. I love my music and this is the best sound and the plus in no wires running all over, just plug it in. Thankyou Sonos for a wonderful product.
2:30 Alexa starts ordering random 'stuff' and sending it to your house.
this is cool! I really need a sound bar for my tv.
Also, my tv is connected to a chromecast and it’s connected to my google home and perfectly turns off my tv.
Angel Valenzuela this is what we want actually. Let me choose my speaker and tv and etc... and have these mics hooked all around the house to control my devices!
So I have a really cool way of turning off the tv and changing the volume. One simple action! I push one button on the remote. It’s this relatively small input device that comes standard with most TVs and takes a fraction of the time it takes to say ‘Alexa turn off the tv’. Really is the future. Oh and I don’t lose it because I’m not a child and I place it on the coffee table.
@ For decades billions of people have no issue with turning their tv off the normal ways. And if youre lucky your tv might have an app. Mine does. I can control anywhere with wifi.
My Google Home Mini can turn my 2012 TV off with HDMI-CEC with a chromecast plugged in, you can simply say Turn TV off or Chromecast off.
would you be able to add a subwoffer?
I love Sonos I have it throughout my entire house I have two play bars One play bass four subwoofers, four play 3s which I guess we're just discontinued, and I have 8 play 1s also a connect amp powering my pool speakers. it's like once you get a few you want to have it throughout the entire house, my house sounds like a club when I have all the volume up it's amazing
FYI : The Chromecast does turn off the TV thru voice command.
Yes it does! It use to be a bit more finicky before, i.e. you had to say Turn "Chromecast" off, but a new update allows you to say turn TV off and it works like a charm.
yes it does i turn my tv off from my google home that commands my chromecast
And it does it very quickly as well!
turning the TV off and on works flawlessly for me with the combination of the google assistant on either my phone or google home and a chromecast on the TV. I never considered it that 'Amazing' but i could see it being a frustrating limitation if it wasnt there.
the Chromecast never seems to work for me to turn the tv off. HDMI is super weird sometimes :( - Dieter
Thats too bad! Mine is the chromecast ultra and a ~5 year old plasma from samsung that didnt need the ultra :P. The more i think about it that would be pretty annoying to not be able to do that
Just FYI: Works for me on an Android TV STB with Chromecast builtin.
The Verge maybe is something related to your TV, my normal $35 Chromecast works with my 4 year old TV.
I really need to stop watching Alexa related videos in the same room as her...
Perhaps the thing I hate MOST about this video is how it triggered my own Alexa and made it go crazy...
Got my first Sonos beam soundbar for tv screen. Liking it so far. Sonos upside down is Sonos. Wow
I can use the Nvidia shield with the google assistant to turn off my TV. All I have to say is "Hey Google turn off Shield" then the TV turns off. I also nicknamed the Shield "TV" with Google Home and I can say "Hey Google turn off TV" and that works too.
Curious if it has full, functioning Alexa functionality like the intercom announcements and other things the Sonos One could not do that an Echo can?
That is one sick guitar stand
Volume up and down works with playbar as well, without ARC
Do I need a smart tv to utilize this?
Smart stuff aside it's actually a pretty surprising Sound Bar with awesome range volume for it's size 👌
I thought "Processor with Dieter Bohn" is about discussing interesting stuff from the technology word. This video seems more like a review/promo stuff.
I just bought one today. Thanks for the video.
Dieter, nice review - but you’re wrong about volume. It’s controlled by HDMI CEC, not ARC.
> Nothing turns the TV off
Well, Home + Chromecast does
Stop saying Alexa in the video! You turned my TV off and triggered Alexa like 10 times!!! Jeeeeezzz...
My TV (Samsung) does not have HDMI out. Does your bar work well with the optical HDMI adaptor?
ARC has been around for quite a while on a load of av receivers. works like a charm
Every time a reviewer says ‘Alexa’, my room goes nuts and tries to do what they say! Bloody trying to play Stranger Things now!
Why does thumbnail show black and white speaker when no such configuration exists
Hi i want to know how many sound rounds max it can take?? I see they used two but like to know if i can add a max of 4??
You said turning the tv off was the “holy grail” of the Alexa abilities but you don’t expand on that so there are many people, like me that just can’t get that skill to actually work.
During this video my alexa was listening too
Sonos the Switzerland of sound, wow
An excellent explanation. I would like to have learned more about how the Beam might fit in to my existing Sonos products collection
And can it connect to my other sonos speakers so I could have a full surround sound of my TV in my living room ?
Would have loved Google assistant on the speaker. Not a fan of Alexa.
awais ahmed Sonos is working on enabling Google assistant on its smart speakers, but they haven’t announced when and are notoriously slow. I’d keep an eye on this though if you are interested.
I pre-ordered one! Thanks for the review. I'm a HUGE fan of Sonos.
after the homepod update I think apple is going make it super hard for sonos. More so after Sonos stopped support for half their line. The IKEA partnership with Sonos might help a lot in that area
dude stop triggering my alexa :D
if money was not a issue which is better playbar or sound beam / ?
Does this Sonos have the same Alexa capabilities as an echo? Can I ask this playbar to turn my heating on or lights on if I have them set up?
So would this be recommended solely for music?
I think the best thing about this is that it is only 399 and with alexa built in thats really nice. I have the sound bar surround system 5.1 and the playbase in my bedroom. I love both but at $399 this would have been a better option for my bedroom. Also better for my Living room. For smaller close quarters listening this would be perfect. I am assuming it can be set up for 5.1. I have not read alot yet.
Hi bro Which sounds is the best, sonos beam or sonos playbar? Thanks bro..
Speaker intro without playing any sound, bravo!
Now Sonos needs to update their Playbase to also include an HDMI input.
I’m assuming the turn off the T.V feature only worked because Sony officially supports Amazon’s Alexa or because it had a Fire TV attached to it. Because it doesn’t work for nearly any TVs out there.
Great video, helped me want to give this a serious look!
This is what I have been waiting for.
Does it work well with 4K TVs?
Will it play DTSX and Dolby Atmos??
He's one of the only reviewers in this channel that I like
Love it. Been waiting for a more affordable "playbar". Looking forward to it.
You can also turn off the TV with a Chromecast
How’s this gonna stack up against the ZVOX sb500?
Great video. Informative, concise, and interesting.
No mention of Dolby Atmos or DTS, or any real comparison to the existing playbar/playbase in terms of quality.
You have to stop with the Alexa. Kept turning on mine Alexa.
What? NO ONE is taking on the Homepod. What's there to take on?
Will it ever get Assistant? If it did it would be a great rival to the JBL link bar
google home and chromecast already do this! i am looking for a good bluetooth soundbar but this would not be the one. Super cool though!
Would rather have Google Assistant tbh
Travis Roopnarine Should be available soon
JBL is releasing a sound bar that integrates Android TV, Google Assistant, and Chromecast
Sonos will eventually support it later in the year.
Thanks Dieter, Lady A turned off my tv!
Stop saying Alexa and giving commands in the videos! Dammit. Kept triggering my Echo.
Mute the audio in editing for the video when he says “Alexa” and just add a subtitle showing “Alexa” on the screen. That way it doesn’t trigger your viewers’ Echos who are watching this.
On a semi related note, any chance you'll be reviewing the new Chromecast integrated Grace Digital speaker/radio units-the Encore+ and Mondo+? I randomly came across the former on eBay, and it's a lovely looking thing, and a cool idea, that I'm surprised isn't more common. It's not actually available in Australia, and there's no (legit site) reviews, I'd love to know if it's worth importing and getting the step up adaptor for. It looks the goods, but I want to be sure, as there's no refund/recourse if it's not! Seems right up your alley Dieter...
I've got a Chromecast and Google Home Mini. When I say, "hey Google, turn off Chromecast," the TV turns off. 🤷♂️
$400 is a deal compared to the steep $700 for sound bars they’d been charging. I’m keeping an eye on this one.
Supporting iOS and Android is good, but why the hell can you only have one Sonos profile per household, even though multiple people use it, with different habits and preferences? That’s seriously stupid.
I wonder how it sounds? I've been on the fence about getting a Playbar for months, but if this is a good alternative, why not pay $300 less? I guess I'll wait for a full review.
Sad that Sonos not available in India
Unfortunately, and I know it is kinda overkill or not very comparable in price, but my LG SJ9 Atmos soundbar is still the best for me. I've already had enough of the intrusive and unnecessary extra steps smart assistants cause.
The Alexa shortcut for asking to watch Stranger Things is ‘kiddie garbage show’.
It's funny, but apparently I've had the "holy grail" of smart assistant tech for something like the last six months in that I can tell my Google Home to turn off the TV and, through the Chromecast plugged into my Panasonic TV's HDMI port, it turns the television off. Simple and absolutely no fuss. Using the same setup I can also cast any music I want through said Chromecast (controlled by voice via the Google Home again, or directly from the Spotify, Pandora, etc. app on my phone) and play it through the soundbar I already own. It's not a big deal or anything, but it feels weird to praise Sonos and/or Alexa for something a $35 Google dongle can accomplish with hardware people likely already own (or even just hardware that doesn't cost an additional $400). Likewise, the dongle approach also avoids the exact pitfall Dieter mentions, i.e. expensive speaker hardware tied to software/assistants that might not exist in a few years. If that ends up being the case, simply change the dongle. I wouldn't normally feel compelled to post a rant-y comment, because I really do enjoy this series, Dieter, and the Verge's generally level-headed perspective, but patting Sonos on the back here felt a bit... disingenuous? Maybe that's not the right adjective... But it seemed like too much credit given for too little value added. I'm sure the Sonos speaker bar sounds great, and that it can provide this level of integration is certainly nice, but when a $35 casting stick and a $40 Google speaker can do the same thing (provided you already own a sound bar/system of some sort - and many people do), doesn't $400 feel excessive?
Joshua Tatro So what if you don't have a sound bar yet? Then it might be a lot more convenient to get this instead of multiple devices.
My Chromecast won't turn my Toshiba TV off. It's definitely spotty.
So having said all that, can I legitimately blame Sonos if I buy one of their soundbars and it doesn't play by DTS audio bluray disks in 5.1 surround sound? Seriously, just start supporting dts codecs guys. We know you can do brilliant sound and apps. We know you can do dolby 5.1 and yiu could do atmos & dts-X to a very high standard so please deliver it. If you do then we don't have to look at any other brand for home audio. I'll happily Sonos-ify every room in my house.
Man I love your guys’ content. Keep it up.
The voice of that bearded dude.. it’s shaking my table.
That end screen spoken word (rap?) though.
Disappointed, HDMI is good but still no DTS, Dolby True HD or Atmos. They should have released Play One Atmos Edition with additional upfiring speakers for those with Playbase who want to upgrade to Atmos. Or even small on wall ceiling speakers.
Why does it need the Ethernet port?
You said "Alexa" so many times, you started controlling my house...and you successfully turned my TV off. Thank you for the review and this is definitely s product I'm considering now.
Hmmm. I wanted the Playbase so I could get good sound under my TV. But I want a HDMI version available for flexibility. Now Sonos have announced an attractive cheaper alternative that has HDMI support but.... is a sound bar. A thing that gets in the way of my TV. Can Sonos really not just bring HDMI to the Playbase?
Google home or Android phone plus a Chromecast turns on and off tv for a while now
I would love this device to have an audio jack
But can you connect that to a SONOS One for surround sound?!!!?
obviously
Awesome! This definitely makes getting one way more worth it! Thank you for answering!
I'd love to have a playbase though haha. My soundbar setup is ok, but I love the idea of having them paired with my Ones
Kyle Ford you would need two Sonos ones though
Justin Stackhouse I do! 🤗
Wish USB-C standard could match up to HDMI 2.1 and we could all enjoy content via USB..!!
Once this thing gets Google Assistant then I might think about buying it, Alexa isn't very smart let's be honest.
Can I connect a hdmi switch, I need more hdmi ports.
'Hey google, turn of the TV' works fine for me. Using Chromecast Ultra.
this vs playbase?
You don't talk about how it sounds. Isn't that the point of a soundbar review?
I want this just so I can get rid of Google Home and Alexa speakers from the lounge. But I'll wait for integrated Google Home, then might buy another 2 Sonor Speakers and have the best of both worlds in a decent sounding multi-room package.
It's kind of rude that UA-camrs still say "Alexa" when you know the people watching this have one and you set it off. Please mute that in future videos
Looks kinda wide (no long) for a soundbar to sit in front of my TV. That said, I am looking for a soundbar that integrates with my TV and Alexa. I want to tell Alexa to play music or play TV without having to use the soundbar remote to switch between the two sources.
Why do they act like hdmi is the new big thing, arc and cec have been out for ages...
my freakin' Echo went off like 90 times during this video.... gah.
it's like sickness. it all started by Playbar for us. then expended to 2 play 1's, then 2 play 3's, then another set of Play 1's... it's been few years by now and not I've never been so glad about tech that I got into their ecosystem.
Which Apple Watch band are you wearing? Looks damn good
Wow! I just wasted $200 on my crappy 5.1 Vizio Soundbar. I’m gonna have to get this Soundbar for sure. The price is great on this. Sonos seriously needs to release the Google Assistant update though. It’s been 8 months since they announced it and still nothing.
Rocky The Vizio Soundbar is actually Google Chromecast compatible. The thing is that it often doesn’t show up on my list of speakers to cast too for some reason. So like 50% of the time it’s just not there to cast to. Unacceptable. Way worse than that though...the subwoofer is terrible. The surround speakers are so anemic and underwhelming. It just feels like added noise and doesn’t really make the system feel full as I expected. Unfortunately I purchase from BestBuy before going on vacation and didn’t get a chance to hook it up before the 14 day return period passed. BestBuy return policy is the absolute worst.
I bet this is going to sound great. But Alexa is so bad compared to Google home. I wish that it wasn't so ugly. Looks a little 90's but I appreciate that the sound tech is so good
Probably the worst video you’ve uploaded. Loved it, liked & subscribed.
Great job!
Tully lol
What kind of bot are you?
