    This explanation of concentration is very helpful. I hear rings of greater self sufficiency and harmlessness as I learn to source my contentment from within.
    As per Stephen Batchelor's word choice, I resist any idea of 'right' this or that. I see Stephen use words like comprehensive and complete. Those words seem to allude to a thorough understanding from which I base my decisions around speech or view or effort, et cetera.
    Regarding effort, I have found my way to a sense that, for me, it is a question of balance. Specifically, I need to balance self acceptance with aspiration. By being accepting of my successes and failures alike at making greater effort, I can remain humble and compassionate toward the struggles of others. This is balanced by staying focused on aspirations toward greater effort, virtue, and skill in any given task or relationship.

      @@DougsDharma Hi Doug- I have found my way to Secular Buddhism vis Batchelor. What is your sense of his choosing not to use the word 'right' for each aspect of the Eight Fold Path? I invoke Batchelor not as a sacred source but as a thinker and
      practitioner grappling with a tradition he appreciates and has devoted his life to understanding.

    Hi Doug, just wanted to say that you and M. Mingyur Rinpoche have changed my life. I'm still at the early stages of discovery of meditation, dyana states, the eightfold path... But I immediately found some very deep and resonating truth in it, and it has already kinda rocked my world by making all of my stress disappear. I felt overwhelmingly happy, overwhelmingly sad, now I understand both are ok and I can deal with them calmly. Thank you so much for these videos.

    Hi Doug, thanks for your work in spreading the dharma. I am new to Buddhism and to your channel and I am enjoying learning more, after seeing some of the benefits that can come with connecting with awareness.
    One question I have, however, is how we go about minimizing those unskillful states of greed and anger etc without suppressing them? Suppression often leads to attracting those things further and I would like to know how to find the middle ground in order to minimize unskillful thoughts and actions in a skilful way.

    • @DougsDharma
      @DougsDharma  Рік тому +1

      Well I have an earlier video on dealing with anger in particular: ua-cam.com/video/RaLXzB3a-KE/v-deo.html . You're right that simply suppressing such states isn't skillful except in very limited circumstances. (Say, stopping yourself from doing something very rash). So it's best to deal with them slowly and carefully, acknowledging them when they are present and seeing what they condition. That is the essence of mindfulness practice.

    A wonder of knowledge I've been looking for all my life, many many thanks for all these clear, precise and skilful presentations. I've been interested in Buddhism since I remember, as a small child, maybe even younger than 5 I wanted to know who is Buddha, sit cross-legged and learn to meditate. It wasn't easy in the 70s in Poland in a soviet block. There was nothing on the topic available. The first book I read was written by a soviet academic and if I recall it properly it was ..very misleading. Then slowly I started to dig and find more and more sources and people practising it, practise myself more and more, my knowledge of English helped ;)
    Your channel is (as far) the embodiment of all q&a I always have had :D

    Hello! I just came across your videos and I wanted to say that they are very helpful to watch. I'm a young person trying to understand Buddhist practices, and you did a good job clarifying the eightfold path in this video. I have a question though, how can I get started with habitual meditation? I've meditated many times before, but I want to meditate more consistently and I feel that I need more mental reminders of some sort to do it daily.

    • @DougsDharma
      @DougsDharma  5 років тому +1

      Thanks nooodlenick! As for meditation, it's like exercise, best to carve out a particular time of day that you plan to do it every day. I'd suggest first thing in the morning, after you get out of bed, or after you get back from the gym if you have an exercise routine. If you plan to do it at the same time every day then you won't forget: it'll be part of your ordinary lifestyle. The only difficulty is starting. As for reminders, there are plenty of apps that can beep to remind you to do things, and meditation apps like InsightTimer can help you to keep track of your daily meditation.

    You imply that jhanic states are inaccessible to the lay person. However, books such as "The mind illuminated" and accounts by people on "r/streamentry" provide evidence that with a few years of daily 1.5 hour sits, a lay practitioner can also experience jhanic states. That is still a substantial investment, but within the reach of many should they decide to pursue it.

    • @DougsDharma
      @DougsDharma  3 роки тому +1

      Oh sure. I hope I didn't say that they are literally inaccessible to laypeople, since I know laypeople who have achieved them! It's just that most laypeople don't have the time or energy to devote to such long-term, lengthy meditation sessions. That said, if they truly want to do so, they certainly can.

    Hello Doug, are laypeople allowed in Buddhism to follow the entire eightfold path (other spokes of the wheel than right action/the five precepts). I find it beenifical (ever since adopting the path been having more mental states of happiness, mindfulness, and joy) when I implement it in my life but I have a discouraging and troubling doubt in myself. Recently ive been worrying if I'm doing it wrong and need to be a monk if i want to progress toward states of enlightenment or better rebirth. Thank you, Doug I appreciate all these informative videos.

    • @DougsDharma
      @DougsDharma  2 роки тому +2

      Sure! Laypeople can practice the entire path if they want to, it’s just that the Buddha didn’t expect them to do so as deeply as monastics since they would ordinarily need to make a living, raise a family, and so on.

    Hello Doug ! Great video ! Are the 8 aspects of the 8 fold path the original teachings of the Buddha ?? I am asking coz I have read that Mahayana Buddhism had greek influence. So I just wanna ask: are the 4 Noble Truths and the 8 fold path, the core aspects of buddhism as in the original teachings of the Buddha ? Or was there greek influence in the above 2 ? If not, what was the greek influence on buddhist philosophy, if any at all ? I am already certain that buddhist art (not philosophy), especially in the form of sculpture depicting buddha in visual form, happened only becoz of hellenistic artistic influence. Was there any philosophical influence on buddhism ? I would really appreciate a detailed explanation !

    • @DougsDharma
      @DougsDharma  4 роки тому

      The Eightfold Path and Four Noble Truths are part of early Buddhism that, so far as we know, go back to the historical Buddha. To my knowledge there wasn't much if any direct influence of Greek philosophy on later Buddhism, and the link between Hellenism and the origin of Buddhist iconography has been disputed. Of course, Hellenism made a difference in Gandhāra but there were other places as well that were constructing Buddhist images at a relatively early date.

    • @DipayanPyne
      @DipayanPyne 4 роки тому

      Oh. I actually was kind of convinced about the hellenistic influence on buddhist art and architecture. Maybe there needs to be more research on this. Actually, this was published in 2020:
      www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13467581.2019.1697698
      The above publication kind of gave me the idea that not only were there hellenistic influences, they actually marked the beginning of architecture in India (which I am still heavily confused about). Please go through it once if u already haven't. The reason I asked u about any greek influence on buddhism is becoz for a very long time, many people, especially in the west, have tried to attribute Indian contributions in many fields such as say, philosophy, to external influences, becoz the tendency has been to portray India, historically speaking, as a consumer of knowledge, as opposed to a producer, which basically strips India off it's originality and distorts history. So I wanted to know more about the history of buddhism.
      Anyway. Kindly go through that publication and share your thoughts sir. Thanks a lot !

    Hey Doug thanks for the channel doing a amazing job at explaining what Buddhism really is , I’d like your take on this, The eight fold path is a wheel of sorts of all aspects of our existence, and is one is in a state of nirvana , you would be maintaining a state of Samadi In each aspect, when we think, we experience a state of samadhi when we act we act experiencing a state of samadhi. Basically the eight fold path is a path that leads to a continuous state of samadhi . What do you think?

    • @DougsDharma
      @DougsDharma  4 роки тому

      Hi Ryan, interesting idea. I think it might depend upon what we mean by "samadhi". In early Buddhism "sammā samādhi" or "right concentration" is jhāna. Jhāna however is not a state we can persist in generally; we need to be fully absorbed in it, so it precludes our doing anything else. The Buddha would retire into jhāna at times and lauded it as a "pleasant abiding here and now", which is to say he was not in it all the time, indeed as a portion of his time as a Buddha it would have only made up a small part. It may however be said that an awakened being is in a continuous state of *sati* or mindfulness.

    I think the eightfold path is similar to other numbered formulations like the 5 aggregates, the 8 worldly winds and the 5 hindrances. They are attempts to categorise the totality of human experience with regard to the particular issues being described. The eightfold path isn’t a path you can follow. You don’t go from right view to intention, speech etc. It’s just that the 8 aspects are all areas of being in the world. Arguably and somewhat crudely, it may be said that consciousness precedes view, speech and action. But where does that get you? I think this is interesting because imo there is another strong current in Buddhism, particularly in zen, where these aspects of being in the world are not the focus and “being” itself as a conceptual grasping of the world is deprecated as hindering enlightenment. In zen, the idea of “right speech” is almost an oxymoron. Whilst the focus of the eightfold path seems to be about being a good person, in zen the whole notion of being a good person would be problematic. Personally I never found the formulation of the eightfold path all that useful. I would think, oh that wasn’t right speech or action etc, but it never added anything to my issues about how to practice.

    • @DougsDharma
      @DougsDharma  5 років тому +5

      Thanks Austin, in general if you don't find a particular teaching worthwhile then just leave it aside. You may end up coming back to it at a later point in your life, or you may not. In early Buddhism the main point of the dhamma was to outline a path of practice so that we could come to a more skillful way of thinking and behaving in the world. But there are many routes to that end.

      This is true Jason, different groups have different ideas of what's right. Still, we all want to be happy, to avoid suffering. Often we are wrong about what will be appropriate to those ends. So if there is disagreement, the Buddha's recommendation is to try for yourself and see.
