  • Captain Bill Gustin of Miami-Dade (FL) Fire/Rescue at world-class fire suppression systems training facility Sprinklermatic University in Davie, FL. Viewers “follow the water” as Bill explains how city water mains supply fire hydrants and building fire suppression systems and the function valves controlling its flow. Bill explains the function and demonstrates troubleshooting a fire department connection, the operation of the facility’s diesel fire pump and jockey pump, and how to check valves in piping from the FDC and fire pump discharge direct the flow of water.
    This is a unique opportunity to observe the configuration and function of a wide variety of sprinkler and standpipe system risers, how pressure-reducing valves operate, and how to properly shut down and drain sprinkler systems. Viewers also get to see the operation of combination sprinkler/standpipe systems, dry pipe and pre-action systems, and observe the flow from a variety of sprinkler heads.

    I have just recently stumbled across your videos. I find them to be very informative and helpful. I have also informed our apprentices to check out your videos. My background is I have been in the Fire protection Industry for 32 years. I was in the installation of Fire Sprinkler Systems for 22 or 23 years and the last 10 years doing Service, Inspections and Testing. I hold a NICET III In water based systems and Backflow license in Georgia and Florida. What really got my attention was the topic of testing and inspection of PRV on standpipe systems. As an inspector in Georgia I have only been part of testing PRV with one company. I have often questioned why is it we go into a building being 4 stories or 90 and the standpipe system is never on our reports. I will say that whenever I go on a new inspection I will inventory the standpipe systems as part of the report. I’m not saying these systems aren’t getting tested. I’m sure most companies hire them out to inspectors who do that everyday. I just find it odd that it’s not being done in house. Keep the videos coming I learn something new everyday or doing something a different way that I was taught. God speed
    Neil

    We are having an issue with the city water I presume. Our jockey pump will go into overload and you can see the pipes shaking violently but the diesel pumps don not start.

      Probably more of a sensing line problem than a water problem. I have seen this if the sensing line doesn’t have the correct orifice unions in the line at proper distance between each union.

    I live in NY and have an s12 and s13 could I just apply for jobs in this industry? or is there something more I need to obtain before I apply?

    • @jayrod0603
      @jayrod0603 3 роки тому

      You can apply to sprinkler companies. It’s required by contractors for you to have it before doing any work to a active sprinkler system. You should get fire guard and Osha as well.

    so, is Capt. Gustin saying not to pump into a system with a fire pump running ?

    • @Sprinklermatic
      @Sprinklermatic  2 роки тому +1

      If the pressure of the Fire Pump exceeds the pressure of the pumper, that's correct that you would not pump into a system with a fire pump running. If the pressure of the Fire Pump does not exceed the pressure of the pumper then you could pump into the system with the fire pump running. An example, a small fire pump for fire sprinkler demand, you would pump into the FDC for the standpipe demand.

      So the only water the fire department pumps will be used is if we the fire department pumper pressure is higher ???

  • @ronwikeheiser6706

    Well the shift type of dry head are not used much these days anymore most are filled with nitrogen well like you said you are old school lol

    • @ronwikeheiser6706
      @ronwikeheiser6706 3 роки тому

      And with a alarm valve we usually put a excess pressure pump in to pump the system side up to look after water hammer

    • @ronwikeheiser6706
      @ronwikeheiser6706 3 роки тому

      And a pressure switch with the excess press pump to take it up and maintain the extra pressure
