  • Written By Steve Gough; Produced by Christine Benson; Directed by Kevin Billington.
    I have decided to go public on this previously 'unlisted' upload due to interest in it and the fact that it is completely now unavailable via BBC & its royalty life is effectively over - I feel it still merits an audience and hope you like it, Steve Gough (aka Stephen Earley)

    Tremendous thanks for this important film. With what is happening now, in 2023, we can see that what was happening 40 years ago was just the beginning of what would turn out to be unfathomable dystopia.

      I agree. Capitalism is based on greed and always implodes. Look at how many times we have been in recession in the last few years. We are headed towards a really hard time- I think we already are- unless things change, and those in government take a less greedy, more pro-active view towards all of the workers in this nation.

I could not take my eyes off this until the end. The entire movie was very subtle but present. I could almost feel the emotions of Jack as he struggled with the new world ideas. It actually encouraged me to research the topic of this movie to learn about the conditions of that time. Thank you to all who participated in making this film a reality.

    Excellent film portraying the plight of the farmer, not just in england but worldwide. Beginning around 1960 we were told that farming is not a vocation but has to be a industry, producing cheap food, maximising profits, get bigger or get out, mortgage your farm, buy out the neighbours until yourself go broke. Still today the suicide rate among farmers is one of the main causes of death!

    • @manishmishraji
      @manishmishraji 3 роки тому +7

      Nowhere more true than in India. Where more than 300,000 farmers have committed suicide in the last 25 years. When they aren't taxed and fertilisers, pesticides, electricity, insurance everything is heavily subsidised for them. The middlemen have become fat cats while the farmer has lost the battle forever.

      @LuciThomasHardylover-qx6ts Рік тому +2

      It is ultimately the customer I'm afraid. We're all responsible. For example, the British like to have high welfare standards for farm animals. No-one wants to see them living in misery, but when they go shopping they buy cheap Danish bacon, factory farmed chicken from Eastern Europe. So many people complain that Waitrose is expensive and shop in Lidl or Aldi, but you get what you pay for. Waitrose actively support small farmers, don't stock GM, have high standards of welfare and use of pesticides etc. That's what you're paying for, quality of life for all. You only have to look at the ingredients used in cheap shops. The responsibility is with us. Cheap over quality???

    A wonderful film. Perfectly, succinctly written. And of course acted. Thank you.
    And how relevant it is today, in 2021!
    Governments have swollen and swollen, especially evident over the last fifty years. It's their nature. Imagine a true government, staying small, keeping to a true principle of doing nothing but allowing prosperity to develop naturally. From J.S.Mill in 1859: "The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilised community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not a sufficient warrant. He cannot rightfully be compelled to do or forbear because it will be better for him to do so, because it will make him happier, because, in the opinion of others, to do so would be wise, or even right... Over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign."
    It's our responsibility, though. We allow them to swell and do more and more harm to us.

      It continues to happen and the Bible tells the story and how it will all end. I'm so glad I've accepted Christ as my Savior. The story ends well, with Christ returning to earth to set up his kingdom. But before that, the Time of Jacob's Trouble (Tribulation period). So it will get worse before it gets better. But take heart. All enemies of God will burn in the lake of fire. They will be brought to account, every last one of them at the great white-throne judgement. Whoever is not written in the Lambs Book of Life will stand at the judgement seat of Christ. You cannot escape it. Praise God! The Lord omnipotent reigneth!!! Get ready church. The rapture draws near!

    Stunning performance.
    I am old enought to remember when the UK joined the Common Market. They foresook importing dairy, beef and lamb products from Australia and NZ at the behest of Brussels. Thousands here were put out of work and herds were slaughtered. And the thing is, the UK exported more of that value to us in manufactured goods. So that stopped. We sold our dairy and meat products to Asia instead. Since then, 50 years of it, the UK has had a deficit balance of trade with the EU every year. It was a cluster fuck and still is. Brexit had to happen.
    Then Mrs May and her trade committee came here for a round of talks after the G20 meetings, to incease trade to cushion the effect of Brexit. So there they were down in Canberra over a weekend. It broke into submeetings and I was in the one about primary produce. He who shall not be named, Permanent Secretary of the Dept and Primary Industry, who had seen nine Prime Ministers come and go asked for a moment to have a say. He stood up and looked around the table and said that in the 60s when UK joined the Common Market, dairy and beef products exported to the UK were slashed. His father was a diary farmer from Bega and he hanged himself in the barn. There was this silence and he excused himself. The heads of the UK team were struck dumb. My boss said, "you screwed us then but you will not screw us now.
    So this movie is about all that and AH performance is outstanding.

    Thank you all for this enlightening, beneficial; and indeed wonderful film. I now know so much more than I did before. Ironically, when I volunteered for the Special Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California, I was blessed incredibly with a partnership of a woman from Ireland.
    With only a population of 2,000,000, I found some answers from her to be remarkable however, not one to ask questions from anyone in general, I didn't realize the greatest question to wit: "What were the problems facing farmers and families during that period, and the solution, if any?"
    Now, and for a long time, I have thought of that lady many times and how blessed I have been to have had the acquaintance. With humbleness and sincerity I remain, Sentebey at 79 y.o. in Los Angeles, California, USA

    My family came to Canada in 1967 because my father, a farmer, saw this coming long before this film was made. Even under Harold Wilson, farmers could see the the ramifications of the so called "Common Market". Everything he predicted came true.
    The UK is doomed, literally, and there's nothing can be done to stop it, even now, with Brexit. It's too late to slow the growth of the invaders who already control all the cities in the UK, thanks to the enforced importations of foreigners to replace Britons. Farmers with 12 gauge shotguns will never be able to ever be in control of their own lands ever again.
    I have many relatives left in England, and yes, I miss them, but I'll never go back home again.

    I don't believe we have counted the true cost of our membership to Brussels Politburo, it's so much more than money, the loss to manufacturing , farming, engineering and all the businesses supplying them, what price do you put on broken hearts, souls and communities. I could once say I was a free English man! Now I'm a member of an unelected elitist European dictatorship. Face the facts, democracy, freedom of thought and speech are gone forever, we didn't need Brussels to prove this fact just a simple referendum. If there is a God thank you for letting me see the Best of Great Britain and sparing me from the decline and bankruptcy that will now surely follow in the next few years. I watched a documentary on Finland and large swaths of old growth trees where reindeers roam are being cut down. The young man much like the 2 sons in this movie said it's for toilet paper and Amazon boxes. Painful to see how much commerce has changed the way people live or can earn a living.
