Cleaning the Ashes out of my Liberator Rocket Mass Heater

  • I had a request for this little video on cleaning out the ash. This first part is a once a day sort of a thing, yielding about a medium dustpan of ash that I put outside in a metal can where it can't catch my house on fire. Every year or two I also pop my cleanouts off and check for buildup in the horizontal heat exchange pipe in the thermal mass bench. I can clean that out a minute or two with an ash vacuum.

    We were making dinner and my wife noticed the neighbor's yard on fire. I went over and cleared their house of people. then I hit it with my fire extinguisher. It started to melt the vinyl siding on the home. It was 'cold' ashes from their wood burning stove. The neighbor thought it was fine just to dump them by the garbage cans. Now she has a metal ash can for the ashes.
    Uncle Mud. Good reminder to the viewers to care for those 'cold' ashes.

      Thank you. We watched our brave local fire fighters trying to decide how to rush in to look for our neighbor after his ash bucket caught the house on fire. Fortunately he had left for the evening and we were able to raise him on his cell phone before anyone risked their lives. Ash buckets can't be trusted inside. Even metal ones.

    Uncle Mud, what kinda pipe do I need to run the exhaust out of my liberator out a basement window and piped up the side of the house. I went to the big box store today about it, was confused, and I want to avoid costly mistakes.
    Thanks.

    • @UncleMud
      @UncleMud  Рік тому

      Dylan, Thank you for watching. A basement can be tricky. You should consult your local code office for exact requirements in your area. You will certainly need a triple wall pipe that goes from the Liberator up past the ridge of your house by at least two feet and a through-the-wall connector like this, though it may not fit through a window opening without editing the window frame. If you have a spare chimney flue down there you can line it with a stainless steel flexiliner for a safer cheaper nicer looking install. www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/duraplus-6-in-triple-wall-pipe-through-the-wall-stove-chimney-kit

    Hey Uncle thanks man you got back to me, for your response on another video of yours. I have a couple of questions. How big is your exhaust pipe on the rocket outlet? 5-6 inch? and how thick is the metal top brother? (Thank you in advance)

    • @UncleMud
      @UncleMud  Рік тому

      6". The top is either 1/8" thick like the rest of it or 3/16" thick like all the reinforced edges. I'm checking with a tape measure and I'm not sure from where I can measure.

    New to this concept, very interested. How much smoke does it put into the room when wood is added?

    • @UncleMud
      @UncleMud  2 роки тому

      None if I am paying attention and put the sticks in right so they don't block the throat of the fire. The small insulated chimney in the middle of the Rocket heater drafts (sucks) so hard on the fire that the smoke is pulled sideways into the heater and burned up.

    How much does it take to burn all night any how many hours will it last

    • @thebluewizard7153

      We use dry hardwood, split. On very cold days, like below zero Fahrenheit, we might go through two boxes of wood in a 24-hour day. On a warmer day, like 30s-40s, maybe up to a box. Measured in banana boxes. House is about 1700 square foot. Your home size, insulation, wood quality, and so forth are all factors.

    • @UncleMud
      @UncleMud  2 роки тому +1

      It will burn for about half an hour before needing another feeding. The thermal mass bench stores heat and releases it slowly overnight so we don't need to feed it all night or damp it down to still wake up to the house being around 60 degrees (f).
