  • In this video, I made a mini fire piston used for lighting a fire with air pressure. It is especially useful if you go camping in nature and you want to start a fire like a pro :P
    Solidworks files and drawings will be available soon on my website.

    Nice work. молодец. Two updates to try. Move the o-ring back 1 cm. For the char-cloth slot try drilling a 7.5mm diam x 5mm deep hole in the end of the piston instead of the slot. If you want to see how well it works try some shaved bark from a tree and see if it ignites.

    Well done, nice project. You are fortunate to have access to the correct tools necessary to produce the fire piston. The exterior grooves make it look even better. And making the end cap removable is an excellent idea so you easily clean the cylinder out when it becomes necessary. Good job!

    two minor adjustments to your design would include: 1) move O-ring back a bit .. 1/8" or so should keep it away from ember, and
    2) put a chamfer on the open end of the cylinder and also on the piston end of the knob, to reduce chance of pinches and to facilitate ability of pulling them apart easier. beyond that, excellent work.

      The bore is too loose 10mm with a 9 mm piston!!!!!!!

    You should be tapping and threading with the job in the lathe. Use the tail stock to keep the taps and dies centered.

    • @JakesWorkshop
      @JakesWorkshop  6 років тому

      thanks for suggestion! I tried that but the force was too high for the motor of the lathe to thread it. Maybe I should consider buying new set of taps and dies ;)

    • @carpio531
      @carpio531 6 років тому +2

      I think what he is referring to is to keep the workpiece chucked in the lathe and and have the tap or die mounted to the tailstock and manually rotate the lathe by hand while keeping slight pressure on the knob that advances the quill on the tailstock. The threads will cut perfectly considering the headstocl and tailstock are in relatively perfect alignment.

    The piston tends to bounce backwards when put in , is there a spring or something?

    • @francotappa5882

      The air inside the piston is compressed and acts like a spring

    I'm surprised the o-ring doesn't slide out of the groove when doing this. I have tried similar designs, but I find that the o-ring keeps sliding out of the groove.

    • @johnhili8664
      @johnhili8664 Місяць тому

      That is because the bore is 10mm and the piston is 9mm it is too loose in the bore !! If you make the piston a sliding fit the O ring will not come out, bad design:-((

    What are the lengths of the rods? How far does the inner extend into the tube? And, what is the clearance from tip to cap when the inner is all the way in?

    Why have the threaded end cap? Why not one piece for the cylinder?

    • @grmanstar
      @grmanstar 3 роки тому +1

      the cost for the process of patenting designs is often not worth it as an indipendent craftsman. People are gonna come up with ideas all the time, to pretend that whatever idea you are thinking, is not being thought about by at least 7 people in the exact same moment, is pure ego. I'd say unless you're running a large scale production with billions to throw at lawyers etc, just let people make and sell whatever. No matter how original you think you are, you're not. Trust me I've been inventing stuff, only to find out they are not that special compared to existing things; making them uneligible for patent.
      Even if they were, I'd make more money making a video about it on youtube, than I would if I went through the patent making process
      Plus, there is an added value to the market. That is, since you're invention is in the public domain; people can be free to modify, improve, and therefore indirectly acting as your free outsource-R&D, that you can also further improve upon and sell from your own store.

    Not to burst your bubble, but I think the whole idea of "fire kits" is that you can make them from simple found or inexpensive items .
