Nice video indeed. Can you make a tutorial about how to set the rubber bands? How to fix them to the body of the sling, what kind of rubber you use, etc. etc.? Thank you
Have you ever tried "Paste wax" or "Finishing wax"? Rub some on a cloth, rub it on your workpiece, let dry for 10 min, vigorously rub with cotton T shirt, Done! You can use it alone, or even on top of most finishes! I think you should getsome, and use it on top of your BLO, it would make the finish a little more durable. It also gives a beautiful satin sheen, and a great natural feel. what's that noise your HF drill press is making? Is the belt loose?
+brandon2076 I have heard of it but never tried it. It sounds nice though, might have to give it a go one of these days. Idk maybe, I'll have to check it when I get it back.
Great video! I tried to get the template, but the download wasn't available. I did get a small print out,but when I tried to enlarge it,it wouldn't. If you could maybe post a picture with a few more dimensions ( depth of forks, width etc.) that would be awesome. Thanks for the great tutorial.P.S. I love watching you shoot! I,d hate to be a pop can with YOU around! LOL. Thanks again, Larry Canter
Larry Canter Thank you!! Hum, I think you might need a forum account to get it to download right. But I'm not 100% sure. If you click the link in the description and scroll down, there are dimensions, pictures, and a tutorial on how to get it to print out correctly. You are very welcome sir! Thanks for the comment! Hopefully this helps, let me know if you get it figured out. Haha, glad you enjoyed :D. Take care man!
what do u think about using half inch birch ply for a slingshot I was thinking about makeing the baby dragon slingshot out of it! think it would be strong enough? and also what do u think about solid wood or will it break if I get a fork hit?
+Dane Robinson I have made slingshots with 1/2 inch birch ply, but they are prone to splintering. One of the first slingshots I made was a pickle fork out of the stuff, and a couple of days of abuse later, I took off one of the three wood layers on the fork. It still works but I would only recommend it if you do not think you will get fork hits, and you are using a design that puts the frame under very little stress. I would however recommend 3/4 inch ply. It doesn't have near as many layers as multiplex, but if you use the 3/4 inch thickness, it is still plenty strong. Fork hits can still splinter it though. For solid wood, it depends on what you mean. If you get a slab of natural oak or something, it will be beautiful and incredibly strong too. I hope this helped :). If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask :).
+legocruz Thanks! Yeah NP, just know that you shouldn't make slingshots out of spectraply, it is mainly used for decorative things like palm swells and what not. Here is the link: simple-shot.com
Can anyone pls provide me the actual size of this template.I tried to sign up the community but error occurs . Pls help ..how can i get an actual size print out of this slingshot. Thanks in advance. Pawan(India)
hey! nice video! I always look forward to watching your new uploads! I have tried to make a few board cut slingshots but I keep haveing the problem where the wood chips up on the bottom when useing my rasp how do u prevent this from happening?
Thanks man! Glad you enjoy them :D. Nobodo on the forum did a nice post on that problem. Here is what he said: "One thing that helps when using a rasp or file on baltic birch or any other plywood is to file only from the outer surface toward the center, never toward the outer surface. That helps prevent the outer surfaces from chipping away. It takes a little longer, but is worth it." As you can see though, I have trouble with it too, usually just cause I'm too impatient to go slow, lol :).
Thank you! I used a wood laminate called spectraply that I learned afterwards is not very safe for making slingshots with. If you are looking to make your own, I would highly recommend multiplex, or high quality Baltic Birch plywood for a nice looking slingshot that will be quite durable too.
Thanks JD! Question: What is the optimal band length for each side you've found? I just ordered some Thereaband Gold for $9.xx for 6' off Amazon and want to make sure I cut the right length. Thanks!!!!!!!
My pleasure :). It really depends on your draw length. Maybe make your first set a tester, and cut it to about 10 inches long, and then cut it down shorter and shorter until you find your ideal length. Then for the next sets you can cut them the right length without losing any material. I think I mine are cut to around 9 inches long, but I don't get them even close to maxed out, and I extend my draw past my cheek. A lot of people I know shoot shorter bands than me. It's really personal preference. Good luck!
Thanks! I set mine up like Mick McQuilton is using on the MCQ Bushcraft channel and using the guide form a slingshot channel of drawlength / 5. I keep Breaking bands though. Could it be because I'm using double-bands? I'm doing this to get a powerful enough hunting slingshot, but do I need that? Trying to get this right. thanks.
For target practice you definitely don't need that. All you need is a band that will get your projectile to your target decently fast for a flat trajectory. I use very light bands and 3/8 inch steel most of the time as it allows me to concentrate on my form, or on the experience of shooting, instead of straining to hold a heavy draw weight. If you are looking for a good hunting setup, I can direct you to a forum that should help. Let me know. There are a couple of things that could be causing premature band failure. Most importantly are how you tie your bands, how you attach them to the forks, the forks themselves, your ammo weight, and if you are maxing out the bands or not. If you tell me where the bands are breaking, and if they are breaking in the same place every time, I can help more :).
Hum that's interesting, if there was something wrong with what you were doing, they would probably be breaking at the same place every time. So I think you are probably fine. For hunting, maybe short band life is the standard, since you want the maximum speed and power from your bands to humanely dispatch an animal. And at that length you will definitely be maxing them out. I'm actually not as much help on this subject as I thought I would be, sorry about that. You can probably get more detailed help by posting a thread in the slingshot community forum with your questions and some pictures, and maybe tell them how many shots you think you are getting out of them, and they should be able to help more than I can. I'll link to a few threads below that could help as well. www.slingshotcommunity.com/threads/slingshot-hunting-power-test.2399/ www.slingshotcommunity.com/threads/hunting-setups.1938/
+Rajiv Lackchan I don't hunt actually, and this was filmed on an air force base. I generally try not to get arrested ;). But I am sorry that it get's picked up by the mic so much. I tried to edit them out, but it just kind of screwed up the rest of the audio. Wish I could fix it for you guys, there's just not much I can do.
Good Job J.D.. I really like your target back stop and ammo recovery system. Very simple set up.
Thank you! It has served me very well. One day I will make something a little nicer looking though :).
that's a very good design. Well made and concisely explained. I will try to replicate it too! Thanks
Nice craftwork there, and great shootin.
Thank you!

great video. a good job well done.
Very nice. I love the look you get from linseed oil.
Thank you! Yeah I love that stuff, I use it on everything :). Works great on metal too, especially if applied when the metal is hot.
I think I might try this, great tutorial!!!!
You totally should! Thanks so much man!
Great vid, can you tell me where you get the template to make one. I have searched all over but can't find it.
Thanks! I had a link in the description but not sure if it still works

I actually don't think they sell it anymore, sorry. I'm sure there are other places that sell wood for knife handles and stuff that have it though.

What did you use for the rubber band or elastic bands
What should I use if I don't have any power tools
You can try using a coping saw, files and sandpaper. Good luck!
SharpshooterJD ok thanks! I tried it and it worked great!
