Happy Thursday and Happy Fall, Everyone! Unless you're south of the equator - then Happy Spring! 😃
Indeed, indeed... I was placed in front of the camera for this week's episode of APTV and Brian and I had our usual good time and shared our usual bad jokes! We also had much to discuss, including upcoming vintage pens, price drops on Pelikan M200s (Apatite & Golden Beryl), Sailor King of Pen Christams Spice Tea (gorgeous!), Sailor Dipton Shimmer Inks, price cuts on Sheaffer Intensity, TWSBI (Cobra) Kai, the soon-to-be released Visconti Rembrandt-S Lavender, and the stealthy & stunning LAMY dialog cc in All Black! Brian and I went on and on! 😁
I believe I answered this week's survey/question in the video, but to recap; I'm using only one ink for 2023 (Sailor Ink Studio 750) and generally speaking, I flush a pen before re-filling even though I'm using the same ink. Brian thinks this is overkill but I say it doesn't hurt anything. When I'm not using only one ink for an extended period, I have no "schedule" for pen cleaning. I clean as needed - and only as needed because I really don't like the painstaking-ness of pen cleaning. I wish I had a "this makes pen cleaning so much easier" system. Alas. But how about you? When, why, and how often do you clean your pens? Let me know in the comments, please.
I've blinked and before this weekend ends, October will have started. Where does the time go? I rather enjoy fall weather, so I'm certainly not complaining. Many leaves here in Appleton have already changed color and many more than just a handful have already fallen. Autumn is coming on strong!
I hope that all of you have had a terrific week thus far and that you have enjoyable plans for the weekend. As always, THANK YOU so much for watching and liking and commenting. It was TERRIFIC to "see" you all again!! #thankyouthankyou

Nice to see Eric again. For pen cleaning, I clean them each time they run out of ink. As I usually rotate my pens and my inks and very rarely refill a pen right away, cleaning is a must for me before putting them away.

Eric is back! Yay! Any chance we'll see a brunch again? As for cleaning my pens, I have no schedule, I just clean them every time I change the ink. I have a lot of pens and inks, and I almost never refill with the same ink, so cleaning happens a lot.

Bam”boo”…. I clean my pens between refills as most of my pens go into dry dock so another can be put into rotation. Those that I re-ink right away only get a cleaning every 2 to 3 top-offs. Thanks for another great episode. Nice to see ERIC at it again. Be well all.

Hi Brain. And a very happy hello to Eric - good to see you again on APTV. Regarding Sheaffer being bought by NIkhil Ranjan: there is a very interesting interview on the channel of Appelboom Pennen, where Joost Appelboom talks to Nikhil about Sheaffers future. I think we can expect several classic pens to re-appear. Very exciting! Coming to your contest question: I do clean my pens before every refill. Mainly because I change the ink with every refill. Exceptions are my MB "Marcel Proust" (I use only MB Toffee Brown in this pen) and my Pelikan M900 "Toledo" (only filled with Lamy Crystal Obsidian) - those I clean maybe every 3rd or 4th refill. The most time-consuming pens when it comes to cleaning are (in my experience) the Sheaffer Legacy and the Parker Duofold Centennial - it takes up to 10 flushes with a bulb syringe, even with the water containing some pen cleaning fluid. Thanks for the entertaining and informative show as always. Greetings from Germany!

I clean my pens weekly. I let them accumulate in a felt lined tray and make it a relaxing. meditative chore, taking my time and listening to music. I even talk to them sometimes, such as: “Now don’t be stubborn,” “You really liked that color, didn’t you?” 🙃

Nice APTV! When to clean pens? Every time my ink runs out the pen gets a nice cleaning, dried in a ziplock where I collect all my desiccant , put to bed overnight and reassembled in the AM. Whether I run them in my ultrasonic is a topic for another day.

Good morning, guys! Great to see you both!
Happy Drink Beer Day! (28 September.)
Beer. Because you can’t drink bacon.
And also looking forward to Coffee Day. Instead of taking my blood pressure, doctor checks my blood caffeine percentage. 😁
How often do I clean my pens... Well, as the majority are vintage (having a difficult time identifying a recent purchase, a "President" branded probably 1960s Platinum), the first time after I get it. Then, generally when a pen gets empty. I try to use what I have, in rotation, and I have enough to use a different pen each day for about half a year. But, generally I refill when I run out of my ink for the month, and clean at the end of the month. I clean my dedicated to iron gall ink Waterman's Taperite about every 2 weeks, and the 2 or 3 others when they run dry. I've seen sacs with old, dry ink...

I think that cleaning is the worst task of pen fandom, although I know that are folks who find it satisfying and even calming. I clean mine after every emptying and fill up with a new ink. Yes, I have too many inks, but it's not stopping me from getting more. Thank you for this vid.

Hi Brian and Eric. Generally, I rinse my EDCs every 3rd or 5th refill, and thoroughly clean them about every 10th refill. I’ll clean the pen thoroughly if I change Ink brands or colors. The black Parker Duofold Sr button filler pen looks interesting along with the pocket pens. Can’t wait to check them out! Have a great great weekend!

Good to see Eric again. It's been awhile. Always enjoy the jokes. Did you know that International Coffee Day is celebrated on 29 September in the United States? So you can celebrate on 9/29 and 10/01. By the way, 29 September is also National Biscotti Day. I always clean any pens that will be stored or if I am changing inks. I have a few pens that are always inked with the same ink. Those I usually clean about every third refill. I do not use ink with shimmer or pigments.

Hi Eric! I clean all but one of my pens each time they run dry, and then put them away and pick a new pen. The one in constant use gets cleaned out every 2 or 3 fills. They don't pile up and become a dreaded chore, and the 5-10 minutes it takes are a nice break in the day.

I mostly clean when changing ink color. In the late 1990s, though, there was a period when I used one fountain pen as my primary pen, and I don't recall ever cleaning it. But it was always used with the same blue Sheaffer ink.

I’m so glad to see Eric! I clean my pen every time I change inks or when I finish the ink in the pen and put the pen on hiatus. If I’m using the same ink, then I’ll refill the pen without cleaning it. I usually don’t refill a pen more than 4 or 5 times with an ink.

Those Sheaffers look nice -- and just over $59, too!
If I'm refilling with the same ink or an ink by the same manufacturer, I generally don't bother cleaning the pen. Usually, it's not more than a few fills before the pen goes out of rotation. When that happens, it usually sits for a few days (or maybe a week or two) waiting to be cleaned, and then I thoroughly clean and dry the pen before putting it back in the cabinet.

It was great to see the Brian-Eric peloton again. I clean my pens when I change the ink in them, and that varies depending on the pen's use, but it rarely involves more than two refills. For instance, I like to use my Hobonichi Techo to try out new inks, so I frequently switch ink in the Pelikan 205 I use with the Techo. (Plus it is so easy to clean that pen because the nib unit unscrews :).) But I will use the same ink all year in my Midori 3-year journal, with maybe a pen switch or two for variety.
(Note to Brian concerning my bicycle ride across the country: In 1986, there was no Strava, no Internet, no GPS, no cell phones, just paper maps and paper logs! We wrote a letter every day to my parents which they saved for our records. And we averaged 95 miles per day carrying an average of 40 lbs, and we never got lost because we didn't really have a plan.)

I only clean a pen when I change ink color, or after 3 or 4 refills. A few of my pens have been sentenced to one particular ink which must be a well-behaved ink usually Pilot Iroshizuku or a Sailor ink.

I clean my pens about once a year, or when I’m having an ink flow issue. I only have two fountain pens and two inks-a charcoal Lamy Safari inked with Robert Oster Orange Zest, and a terra cotta Safari inked with Robert Oster Graphite-so I don’t feel the need to clean them often. This works out to about every 6-8 refills.
Love the show! But Eric, I’m not sure that I could stick with a single ink for a whole year, even with my limited setup. 😂

Good bad jokes. I clean pens when changing ink color or putting a pen away to rest for a while. I managed to snag a Twsbi Draco and really like it. If you wait on the Kai and your preferred nib size isn’t available you can buy a Twsbi nib unit or swap from another Twsbi of you have the right pen.

Eric! Welcome back! Have to say, I like the look of the new Lamy CC in black. I have the cobalt blue version already and was toying with the idea of buying the piano white but now…….wow, tough decision. I like that Lamy has brought the new cc with this nib, I swapped out a regular gold nib on my matt black dialog 3 for an OB Imporium nib like this to get the same colour effect running through the pen but I prefer the cc in my hand to the dialog 3 so I guess I’ll have to get one.

I usually keep only three pens filled at a time which is the amount that fits in my pen case. Then when they run out of ink I clean them and refill them or switch them out with new pens and inks. However, following this year’s Pelikan Hub - I have 10 pens inked up and I’m now wondering how long it will take to cycle through this much ink. Guess I better get to writing…

I felt like I was getting away with murder or black crimes against my fountain pens when I just refilled them without cleaning them--and I was using the same ink! No one else in my house uses fountain pens, they didn't get the level of transgression I was committing... So I usually (96/100) clean after every fill, and I used to let air dry overnight but now I'm too impatient and just fill after I've flung most of the water out. Not a standard season, but I may do an extra everybody-in-the-pool! cleaning at the start of a school year or near a pen show or pen meet up.

I have several hundred pens. In order to use most of them, over time, I tend to run a "fill" of ink through a pen, then clean it out and put it away, and ink up another pen (although I have to admit to having FAR too many pens inked up at one time).

I can't wait to see the vintage Japanese pocket pens, although I'm supposed to be on a no-spend right now. I actually enjoy the ritual of cleaning pens, but I clean them one at a time as they run dry rather than letting them pile up. I usually put pens away and bring new ones into the rotation, so I clean pens when they're empty -- no schedule. I do have some pens that I always keep inked with the same ink, and those I clean after about every third fill. I can’t believe it’s almost (in two days) October. Before you know it, Eric will need to make a decision about his 2024 ink color! I don’t have a favorite pen yet, one that I use and ignore all others, and I certainly don’t use only one ink color - samples are so much fun and the companies keep coming out with new colors. So, I clean my pens every time I change ink colors, which is really as soon as each one is empty.
