  • Of all the delicious foods we have eaten in China, this coconut chicken hotpot is probably the BLANDEST dish we have experience so far.
Hailing from Hainan Province, coconut chicken hotpot - aka the summer hotpot - is pretty popular in Shenzhen, and many fans recommended that we go and try it, so that's exactly what we did a few nights a go.
The restaurant itself was really cool, with lots of interesting features and open-air dining spaces, but sadly the hotpot was really bland - and probably the blandest dish that we have eaten so far in a Chinese restaurant.
The overall meal was not without its merits however, so dive in and see if this dish is indeed the blandest hotpot in China, or rather a light and tasty alternative to the usually spicy and heavy hotpots that are out there on the dining scene.
    Enjoy!

(7:28) The browned rice stuck at the bottom is absolutely the best part of the clay pot rice. If you also order steam fish, pouring the soy sauce from the steam fish onto the crispy rice. They are a match made in heaven.

It looks so delicious, and I love the "pods". It gives every family dining there privacy and the sense that they are home. It's like everyone gets their own VIP room. :) and the set meal for 198 RMB makes the meal so affordable. I believe that's less than $28 for a family of 4 or about $7 per person.

Really honest review...i lived next door to a massive Coconut Chicken Hotpot in Beijing, it was the go to place for us to take visitors and other expats who couldn't handle spicy food !

Thanks! This place is real fun to take visitors to, each table is a private booth also, food not too expensive, and it’s nice and bland if you are tired of spicy food 😉

I have had this Hainan style chicken coconut hotpot in the US and the soup is very flavorful. I guess your restaurant did not use pre-cooked chicken and coconut broth as the soup base, then you cook 5 min for the raw chicken meat. Yeah it would be bland if you only cook some coconut meat strips in the water. BTW that spongebob loos like bamboo fungus 竹笙

Hainan food is quite bland anyway, the main flavour is almost always with the sauce.
Hainanese cooking emphasizes on original flavour hence the need for sauces.
