@13:20 You're very wrong about Russian strategic planning. Their psyops and disinfo communities are the epitome of strategic planning. They play the long game of fomenting social political revolutions measured in decades. They operate under the premise that the fringe eventually becomes the center, and if they can infiltrate, influence, and shape the fringe of society, then within 1-2 decades the ideas and worldviews they sede there will migrate to mainstream political discourse. They did exactly that with the US - started with the far left during the Cold War, expanded to the far right online fringe communities like 4chan in the internet age. In 2016 it came to fruition with the election of their puppet Trump as President. Don't underestimate Russian long-term strategy, don't be blind to it, and don't get complacent.
It's possible but considering what's happening in Georgia and how Ukraine gained independence, I would say that their intelligence game is ineffective.
Ukraine has a lot going for it, major untapped natural resources, a leading exporter of agricultural products, a highly educated technically savvy and innovative population. So the potential for western investment and profits is huge. Private investment will only take place if Ukraine's long term security is guaranteed. And as Ukraine becomes more prosperous it will be a major market for American companies. So if the idea of defending democracy and the rules based order doesn't thrill Donald Trump too much, maybe the idea of making a lot of money will.
I agree. The other thing a prosperous Ukraine will do is an indication to the people of Belarus and Russia of what their lives could be like. Perhaps with a change of leadership in their countries.
@@nigelgarrett7970 That's a good point. Of course it's exactly what Putin fears. It would be the end if him. There is no conceivable reason to crank up Brazilian military to Russian levels, but if there were, Brazil could crank things up in a few years like the US in 1940. So how could Russia think it could successfully intervene all over the world.

@nigelgarrett7970 I think it is partly because we expected more empathetic leadership from them despite the the rumours we heard about the then Leader of the Opposition from the conservatives. I know they were not specific about how they would govern, but when they immediately made excuses rather than explaining what we could, not must, do they began to alienate themselves. Of course, it might be that so few people bothered to vote they knew that a government would not have enough people behind them so they decided to use the whip rather than the carrot.
I'm reading Kotkin's excellent Stalin biography and there he suggests Russian expansion in the 19th century was driven by a sense of insecurity, which compelled them to drive their border further afield, but which itself generated even more Russian insecurity and a need to take the next place to protect what they had just won. And so on, all underpinned by a Russian belief that she was a great power - and needed to act like it, and prove it, to prevent undergoing the same colonisation as other non-great powers, such as China had experienced. Seems we are seeing the same process today. Of course, the 19th century 'great power' Russia became the defeated power after the Japanese war in 1905, leaving Russia near-bankrupt, chastised, and in ferment - which led to the eventual overthrow of the regime.
