    This project needs a 2-4 month follow up review, including what you would have done differently, if everything is still functional, and how much you actually use it. I am tempted to build this one.

      Not going to lie, if he gets a good hot glue, it's good to know when you do shit like this.
      Even if it's hand made, if you can make it quality, all the better. Give it a nice sand blast and some good paintwork and you've got a quality product all your own for cheap.

    How do you deal with shutting down the Pi properly? You can't just be switching off the power, can you?

    • @greatscottlab
      @greatscottlab  8 років тому +65

      You can shut it down through the main menu. And then I kill the power.

    • @rickseiden1
      @rickseiden1 8 років тому +5

      Do you know of a circuit you can use to push a button to turn it on, and then push a button to turn it off--but the system shutdown properly and then cuts power so the battery doesn't get used up? I am in dire need of something like that.

    • @lexus4tw
      @lexus4tw 8 років тому +1

      Rick Seiden you can just switch off the power, you don't have to shut it down like a pc

    • @rickseiden1
      @rickseiden1 8 років тому +62

      It's a Linux system. They have to be shutdown properly before being powered off, or you will corrupt the file system. Basically, these really are mini pcs, and need to be treated like that.

    • @Ungineered
      @Ungineered 8 років тому +5

      That will risk corrupting your sd-card.
      @Rick there are other projects on the Gameboy pi out there that handle that problem, however it's fairly simple, you need a voltage monitor chip and for example a program that runs in the background of the RPi listening on a certain pin, if that GPIO is pull high/low from the monitor alarm it will the initiate a shutdown. You can even make the system check so that your program is always running.

    Hi Scott!
    I loved this project! It inspired me so much, I ordered all the needed components immediately after the first part :D. I thinked about it pretty much and I have one question: What happens when the battery protection circuit cuts the power? Because if it don't save and shut down the pi before the the circuit cuts the power, all your game progress will lost.
    I have an idea how to solve this but I'm really not into the PI stuff (like to play with the arduino and esp8266 better), so can you help me with this please?
    I'll use a 18650 li-ion cell with a charging/protector module from aliexpress (it's dirt cheap, abut 0.5$ /piece) with a 5V Boost converter. With a voltage divider I'am able to scale the battery voltage down so i can connect it to an analog pin on the zero. So here is the problem: I don't know how to monitor the analog pin in the software and run a script which saves the gamestate and make a soft shutdown if the battery voltage reaches 2.8V from RetroPie (or Recalbox, from this perspective it's basically the same).
    Love your channel, keep up the amazing content!
    Best regards!

      3D printer is not necessary, make things easier yes, but necessary no. There is always a workaround when a 3D printer is on the screen.
      This videos not step-by-step tutorials, rather than inspirational videos.

    • @winnetouch
      @winnetouch 7 років тому

      The button wells aren't necessary. I do have access to a 3d printer but even without it I could have built mi GB zero. You can also use some polymer clay like Fimo to shape the wells, bake it in a kitchen oven and glue that in place. You can also just use the original metal plate just make sure it's insulated. My project doesn't look anything like his inside. The only 3d printing I did was for the wells and even that isn't necessary.

    • @lumitrac

      you can get a sheet of ABS plastic for the backing cover, or just buy two cases and salvage the button wells if you feel the need to retain them. they arent expensive.

    A big tip for anyone attempting this or other projects... Don't use hot glue, or if you have to, only use it in non-crucial places and in small amounts. The main problem being that the bond of hot glue gets weak when it gets near freezing. You wouldn't think this is a big issue for most people, but, say you forgot this in the car for a few hours during the winter months, or you made one to sell, and you ship it in the mail where it's below freezing in a lot of places...

    I want to see an affordable, compact, handheld PDA, with a digital camera, speakers, contacts, calendar appointment reminder, and everything except for WiFi, Bluetooth, cell signal, wireless pay, and other wireless technology. Fit inside a metal case to prevent wireless technology, tracking... A built in cyberdeck isn't a bad idea. As for the keyboard, either a tiny BlackBerry keyboard with a small screen, should extend battery life, by reducing the screen size. Of course the screen should be bright outside. A microSD card slot will be great. The screen should have metal shielding behind it to prevent wireless technology such as WiFi... From leaking out. Privacy is the priority.
    Maps and navigation using a gps reciever is a great bonus as well.

    Love your builds. Would love to see a Pi wireless access point ad blocker. That uses the easy list. Amongst other lists, and options. Perhaps VPN and DNS changers. Thank you.

    I think a thin cover to hide the pi would be good - also a thin clear bezel to protect the screen (like an original gameboy had)

    si la controladora de pantalla lleba audio por alli la puedes enganchar el audio dejando libre la raspberry, e incluso le puedes dotar de un potencimetro al audio

    Nice build, I like that. However I would never glue a post with hot-glue. Use superglue, or epoxy instead. The screen cutout could have be a bit smaller, as the actual pixel-area is a bit smaller than the black area.

    I love watching your raspberry pi videos! I own all versions of the raspberry pi, but i am no way clever enough to do anything remotely this cool, i was wondering if you could make a jukebox? with leds etc- i think that would make for an AWESOME video !
    If anyone in the comments knows how to do this or has any ideas please let me know, i would love to build a jukebox!

    I dont really care about the videogame or what hes doing... Do you HEAR the level of Explanation he is giving you? This is how you do a technical DIY. Study the layers of his mind, how he can articulate himself. Awesome video, awesome logic.

      Thanks for reading, I wish more people thought like you... We would have a great youtube "world" if people thought like how you thought... and applied it to all facets of life... We would all get some awesome content. This type of video is why I signed up for youtube 10 years ago.
