I made a new pickup leader from Solarium/Sunbrella fabric. It's strong, comes in beautiful colors and patterns and is easier to pin into than canvas. It also has minimal stretch. This video made the attaching portion so easy!!
How did you get them on straight without the previous leader to follow? I’m in a similar situation. There’s no leader currently attached and there’s gunk all over the bar.

argh. I'm replacing leaders now. Unfortunately the leaders I'm replacing were not put on as nicely. The previous owner or installer used a sparse amount painters tape which isn't coming off nicely after 11 years, and the bead of glue is not a bead. It was slathered all around the bar. And it wasn't white or wood glue. It was something extremely hard and sticky that did not want to come off. It took a tremendous amount of scraping and solvent to get the canvas off. Please folks, in the name of all that is holy, follow this mans instructions!!
Hi Andrew, thank you for this informative video, which has put me at ease as I prepare to change the leaders for the first time. How frequently do you recommend replacing the leaders?
Thank you Dave. This method is basically a duplicate of the factory installation.... but done at home. The white glue dries HARD and so it won't allow the canvas to slip over time. Carpet tape might possibly do the same thing but I can't think right now of a shortcut to find out, other than to try the tape and then wait ten years to find out if the durability is the same. I do know that if the leaders are only duct-taped they invariably will not remain straight, because the glue from duct tape is not hard, it's viscous.

Instead of the glue step you might consider using double sided carpet tape.
