A Tough Job here to say the least under some very trying circumstances including water supply & serious cold & wind weather conditions . This thing had the potential to really run loose and may have taken blocks with it. A Excellent Mutual Aid response on this job & very hard work done here by the Crews in keeping it from running the Blocks around this Job !
In the later part of the fire (say after around 10:00), looks like everything is burning pretty fiercely. At that point, does water actually get the fire out any faster? I wonder if it will burn until available fuel is more or less consumed regardless. If so, might putting water on the fire actually let it burn longer?
Eric Lehman, the water will extinguish the fire quicker as long as it is applied correctly and by using the proper appliances. Hand lines alone are not going to do the job. There simply isn’t enough water being discharged to overcome the fire. At the point you’re speaking of there needs to be master streams operating that would provide the output and the “power” to penetrate further into the building and to reach all that is burning. A few of the ladder trucks operating at or even below the window levels directing the streams upward would have allowed a lot of water to reach the fire essentially extinguishing it much sooner.
Buildings like that scare me; especially if it's "slumlord modifications". They can create an immense fire load, with a surprise around every corner.Locally, there's an old theater turned into four apartments, three upstairs and one down. Except, you have to go upstairs, down a building length hall, and down steps into the fourth apartment. That's the only access, it doesn't even have windows...

As an old smoke eater from the 60's and 70's, you get use to the whims of upper management and City hall, like the hours we should work, what we get paid and what gets us to the fire scene. The one thing I could never figure out was, who came up with the what color the apparatus should be. What's wrong with traditional RED? Starting in the 70's you started seeing some really god awful colors, starting with School buss yellow, International Orange , white then to lime green, (yuck) like showed up in our department, then it went to multicolor units. To date, I think FDNY and Chicago Fire Dept. have the best color schemes. I'm waiting for Camo.

Damn, you know it's pretty far along when the smoke is pouring out of all the mortar joints. Great video!
Thanks!

Man you got some great shots of that fire. Thank you for all the photos.

A whole lot of Fire Apparatus and Firefighters on the scene, but very few handlines and even fewer deck guns in operation.
Shut up.

Cool Video! 02:47 That blue engine looks awesome!
You're kidding, right??
@@charlesrudish9147 What's wrong with the Blue Fire Engine?
Should have been an exterior attack when smoke showed from brick mortar?
Real nice video on what looked like as tough, windy job.
Definitely, rough for crews even after going exterior with the smoke banking down to the ground
Great Job Joe!! Like the wind!!
Thanks Bill

Awesome job on the video and stay safe enjoy your day
So much has changed since the Worcester Cold Storage fire. This looked ugly from the beginning. Great job keeping everyone safe.
hi nice video on what like you work hard on the fire
one problem with this video. it was too short! great work, keep it up!
Very cold and lots of water flying with the wind, tried keeping the cameras dry for a decent portion of the fire

Very nice job considering the conditions.
The FF's just never seemed to get ahead of the fire.
Great video ....
Thanks!
Is it still burning?
There were still pockets of fire smoldering when I stopped by 6 days later

Why are they fighting the fire against the wind, That’s a losing battle.
How long have you been on the job?
Obvious failure by the command staff. Nobody bothered to bring the magic wand to change the wind direction.

Looks like Shenandoah saved money by not providing BAs. Lots of tanks on the backs, but no masks. Unbelievable!
Too little water to contain. Did the best with what they had.
Well I'm sure the neighborhood is wide awake now. 3:56
