I wasn't taken with Prehistoric Planet at all.
Don't get me wrong.
The VFX were great, and normally I love David Attenborough, but for me his narration actually spoils an otherwise great series and probably Apple's only good series so far.
The old BBC Walking With Dinosaurs was narrated by Kenneth Branagh and his narration just added an edge I think any prehistoric or dinosaur documentary needs.
David bless him for all his charm is just long past the edgey time of his life.

Stephen Fry is not just an actor and comedian, he's well known in the UK for being incredibly intelligent and knowledgable, hosting a celebrity panel show called QI for several years. This makes it all even worse, because it's so obvious that he's putting in as much effort as the producers did, which stretches the very definition of effort to breaking point! I can only assume he has lost a bet, made a promise to an idiot, or spent all his QI money.

Stephen Fry actually narrated a good dinosaur documentary before. He narrated 2011's March of the Dinosaurs a nice little movie which while imperfect and suffering from budget constraints was a thousand times better than this program in every possible way.
@@alharron2145 QI is very entertaining and it has plenty of neat facts, but it frequently gets things wrong as well. QI values interesting over accuracy.
Though I would also say that Stephen Fry's debates and interviews with religious figures to be more evidence of his intelligence or knowledge than his hosting of a panel show featuring comedians anyway.

Professional just means someone paid for it.
There really doesn't have to be anything beyond that and the quality level of 'professional' production can vary drastically to the point that even VFX made in a game engine like Unreal can look better than offline rendered frames on a render farm.

This concerns me greatly for what kids, the future of knowledge, will take away from this. When I was a kid I believed that fake "Dragons: A fantasy made real" documentary because it was "professionals" and done in a very realistic documentary way.

Holy hell, that "Tyrannosaurus" skull looks like someone who never saw a dinosaur skull made a model based on the shape of the JP rex.
The super-heavy Diplodocus can be explained, though; the sauropod was part of the Paleo Weapon X program and had Adamantium laced into its skeleton, thus doubling its weight.
Given the level of scientific rigor in the rest of the production, I think it might be overly generous to credit them with having a valid reason for anything.
I have to say this is a 100% example of how NOT to make a dinosaur documentary

This documentary changed my life. It taught me that T Rexes breath fire and that Stegosaurus use their plates to fly. Truly the documentary of all time.

I tried watching the documentary with Stephen try but I had to fact check each dinosaur they had to the point where I turned it off and I went straight to Walking with Dinosaurs. One of the best documentaries ever made in my opinion

I feel bad for Dr. Susie Maidment, Dr. David Hone and especially Dr. Dean Lomax for having to put up with Channel 5's shenanigans. They're among the best paleontology science communicators in online community, having them here to... do whatever the heck Channel 5 wants them to do is an insult to them.
Ark’s models aren’t even supposed to be accurate. In lore, everything is genetically modified to make it where it wont burn to death at a volcano or freeze to death in the arctic, etc. I mean, there are literally WYVERNS and other mythical creatures in ark. But for some reason the people in charge of the models decided “hey why not steal the model of this titanosaur which is visibly supposed to be not a real life sauropod or anything” like why? Just, why??

Crazy how such wrong things can be so haphazardly published for public, seems like all the budget went to pay Stephen Fry instead of finding actual experts.

If you pay attention you can notice that at some point the stegosaurus and titanosaur models are straight from ark(I believe there is a pteranodon one somewhere too)

Man, at some point the "documentary" said allo weighed 15 tons, I didnt know allosaurus weighed almost 2x than rex.
I think that the spinosauruses were like a mixture of a croc & a heron in terms of lifestyle & locomotion.
Except for the flying part obviously.
I feel like even when the host is talking about the dinosaur, if the dinosaur was sleeping or doing anything besides stand there like a deer in headlights it would make the show slightly better.
About the steel teeth test, I wanted to say there are many types of steel. There are hard enough that can cut other types of steel, but there are also types that are so weak that a child can break it. So there propably is a type with similar hardness to bone, but I also doubt they used it on this show.
I don't remember them specifying the type. If they used a special type of steel, they should have said so. But I doubt it. They've been using steel for every experiment, simulating teeth and claws.

The CGI is amazing, given that they clearly used a PS2! And the greenscreen work is almost on youtube level (for a small channel with 300 subscribers)!
Small correction, as editor you do not have the power to simply cut out parts, editors are not directors we are not allowed to change the work of our clients (I did not work on this, but I'm an editor in a video studio with absolute rock bottom prices so no, I wouldn't go bother the client about double information as I'm not being paid to review their script, it couldvery well upset the client and cause drama, I imagine thus was the case for whoever edited this thing )
So I was in the first two episodes (Iguanodon etc) and consulted on some of the sequences for accuracy. I can tell you that none of us saw any footage until it was on the TV and in a finished state. As far as experts saying the wrong weights, sometimes we make mistakes, we're not all experts on every single taxon, and it's easy when you're on camera to slip up and say a wrong number, but yes I agree it should have been picked up in editing. Susie and the rest of us would never knowingly and deliberately give false information, it's what we actively try to avoid, we'd rather just say we don't know.
My condolences to you for being part of this /lh (I hope you were at least properly compensated). It sucks that apparently none of the experts were consulted later down the line, as this project clearly derailed and could have used some uhhh input.
I definitely understand people misspeaking and experts not being an expert on everything, however, 15 tons for Allosaurus is SO far off, than even a casual dinosaur fan knows it to be wrong. It doesn't take an expert. Same for the Diplodocus. A slight slip of the tongue on the weight of one animal? Maaaybe. Two in a row? And so extremely? Ehhhh... I don't know what happened there. But it's a blunder worthy of being poked fun at. With this video being a roast, it probably is a bit meanspirited at times though.

Loved the video, it gave a good laugh. Gonna share my thoughts on this.
To start with, a part that bothers me a lot is the deck. Not the inaccurate information on the dinosaurs and experiments, although those are infuriating and nonsensical respectively, but the deck that appears and which the _Diplodocus_ has no problem with. And how were they able to build it in the first place without potentially attracting attention? It’s supposed to be the Late Jurassic but there’s only two dinosaurs that show up in this part from what I know and they don’t even notice Stephen.
Instead of that, they could’ve made Stephen use a climbing equipment to be next or near enough to the _Diplodocus_ and still have a different perspective.
In episode 5 of Prehistoric Park (The Bug House), Nigel travels to the Carboniferous Period and at one point, climbs a tree-like plant. The same thing could’ve been done as well here.
Sure, it would’ve made it a bit more like Prehistoric Park but the concept of time travel with dinosaurs was already used (and in a much better execution), so it wouldn’t have mattered much if they “borrowed” a few more examples.
And if you’re going to have Stephen say things so confidently but also make him surprised at the most obvious things, don’t have him confidently talk about a subject. Instead, make him express some doubt on what he says and the experts provide the information. Or perhaps make him the audience in a way, and have the experts deliver the information. This way, you won’t have much conflicting information between them and Stephen is saved from being utterly surprised _after_ the expert says something that he already stated before.
One of the bigger hindrances was the fact that more unique/lesser-known dinosaurs weren’t included. We already know a lot about _Tyrannosaurus_ and I’m honestly starting to get tired of its appearances. Show us dinosaurs like _Guanlong, Eustreptospondylus, Shunosaurus, or Centrosaurus._
Another thing which was already covered, was the issue of the dinosaurs being completely oblivious to the presence of humans. In a documentary where Stephen Fry somehow traveled back in time, dinosaurs’ acknowledgment of humans were nonexistent. I know Sea Monsters and Chased by Dinosaurs had the same “issue” of having no explanation for time travel but these still worked because the real issue was already fixed: animals there acknowledged Nigel which was covered here. This probably could’ve happened the other way around like Stephen’s did but luckily didn’t. Also, just something to say, but I really like how the cameraman and the crew would actually interact with Nigel and the animals sometimes. Such as the _Protoceratops’_ nesting area and the _Velociraptor_ chase sections in Chased by Dinosaurs. Didn’t really need to be included but it helped with the immersion more.
Anyway, got off track a little bit. What I was going to propose was to obviously have Stephen do things to not get detected, and have dinosaurs actually see him.
In Prehistoric Park and Chased by Dinosaurs, Nigel would have to occasionally hide to avoid dangerous animals, which further helped tell the audience indirectly, “he needs to hide because if he won’t, he’ll get killed.” It felt like he _could_ get in danger even though these were CGI/puppets because the situations felt real enough to potentially get injured (and he would actually receive minor injuries a few times).
In Dinosaur with Stephen Fry, they’re essentially telling us, “humans here are nonexistent to the dinosaurs”. Have Stephen out of sight of dinosaurs and hide. Another thing, but given the fact that dinosaurs here are human blind, make them do things. Allow them to walk around, eat food, anything. Don’t make them stand around and move their body. It’s just weird, even more so with Stephen and an expert next to it.
Another thing that’s weird which is already covered is that they completely skipped over the Triassic. Honestly, you’d think with how much Pangaea is apparently mentioned, the time period where it existed for a section of its history would be included. But no, off to the Jurassic we go! And it’s not even the Early or Middle Jurassic. No, it’s the _Late_ Jurassic in a timeline where flowers and grass evolved early and didn’t have to go through the Cretaceous for that. And since this was seemingly supposed to be in chronological order, why leave the Triassic out of it in the first place? It’s when dinosaurs first appeared and it’s part of the Mesozoic Era. Pangaea only broke up 175 mya during the _Middle Jurassic_ anyway so this whole period could’ve been covered if they wanted to talk about Pangaea so much.
Episode 1 could’ve been about the Triassic, episode 2 could’ve been about the Early/Middle Jurassic, episode 3 could’ve been about the Late Jurassic, and episode 4 could’ve been about the Early/Late Cretaceous.
Even if this documentary was a massive disappointment, at least we still have better ones like Prehistoric Planet, the Walking With trilogy, Prehistoric Park and others starring Nigel Marven. Life on Our Planet 2023 is coming and Forgotten Bloodlines: Agate is raising funds which I am genuinely excited for since it covers something other than like, the Pleistocene which I’m kind of getting tired of. Same thing with the Cretaceous, the focused animals during these times are somewhat limited if I’m being honest. There’s a ton of dinosaurs to choose from for the Cretaceous Period but they sort of just focus on the Maastrichtian and dinosaurs like _T. rex._ Anyway, having Nigel as the narrator for Agate is great
The fact that they literally stole the Stegosaurus and other dinosaur models from ARK Survival Evolved really shows that they don't give a shit.
My grandad mentioned the allosaurus machine thing biting into a watermelon cuz I didn't watch it. But I was looking at him so weirdly because I was confused on how accurate that wouldn't be at all.

I was really looking forward to this, real shame it didn't deliver as well as other shows, Stephen Fry should have shined in this role.
The only reason this was made and released is because it is basically a mock-buster . The same thing happens with theatrical movies; the new dune movie came out and now there's a cheap knockoff called planet dune. Pacific rim's counterpart is Atlantic Godzilla vs. Kong was turn to monster vs.ape.
Big fan of Dr Dave Hone, who appeared on this show. He didn't name it specifically but in his podcast, Terrible Lizards, he mentioned being involved in a project a few months before this came out and he... didn't sound optimistic about it.

This whole thing almost feels like a screen test that was meant to be pitched to someone to try to get a budget for the real, full production, fact checked version but instead someone pushed it out as is.
I’m thinking about making a multiplayer dinosaur hunt where can play as the Hunters or a dinosaurs it takes place in a dinosaur theme park in the near future where you as the hunter you have to get the dinosaurs back in their enclosure and as a dinosaur you have to eat everybody until there’s no more survivors left or attack them with your horns end of a deadly herbivore weapon I’m thinking about making it when I have a chance it will probably have voice chat but what do you think?:)
