  • Muncey puts his faith and trust in crew-chief Jim Lucero and reluctantly agrees to test drive the new cabover hull. But after a few test runs and modifications by the crew, it became obvious to Bill that this was the raceboat of the future.
"Not only is this the best documentary about Bill Muncey that I've ever seen, it is the best documentary about the sport of unlimited racing I've ever seen!" -Chip Hanauer
Freed from any narrative or point of view, the Bill Muncey Story is the real and timeless story of the greatest hydro driver of all time - as told by the people who actually lived it with him. Interviews with Keith Jackson, Dave Seefeldt, Chip Hanauer, Fran Muncey, Fred Radke, Jim Harvey, Gina Fumes, Wil Muncey, Jim Lucero, Billy Schumacher and David Williams. Each episode is also packed with rare footage and photos from the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museums vast archive.
Back in 2001, when it was decided to produce a documentary film about the life and racing career of the greatest driver of all time, Museum Director David Williams, video producer Don Mock, and the Museum Board of Directors realized that the eyewitnesses to his life story were fast approaching their golden years. There was no time to waste in gathering first hand testimony. So they cast a wide net and got right to work, spending many hours collecting interviews from every corner of Bill’s colorful life. And what stories they heard! Today, as this film is re-released, many of the legends who are interviewed here are gone, making their words and memories all the more poignant.

So wild seeing the interviews during that first season and how apprehensive he still was about the cabover!

I've been doing a deep dive into Unlimited Hydroplane history watching all the Thunderboats Video uploads. I'm really enjoying learning about Bill Muncey's career.

The Blue Blaster came out when I was about to turn 5 years old. The first cabover of any kind I have the fondest memory of seeing in person.

Fran Muncey...I had merely thought of her, as being just a "Trophy Wife"...His first wife Kit, seemed so supportive of his racing, in those earlier days, and I was kinda shocked when I heard they had divorced. It is clear to me now, that Fran was even more supportive, particularly of his later career..Of course, she had the advantage of being NOT a mother, so she could devote her time to her famous, successful, and increasingly wealthy husband! Time, as well as circumstances, can change relationships...for better, or worse. The more I learn about my boyhood hero, Bill Muncey, the more I admire him, as a man, and as a great spokesman for the sport. He clearly was still on a "roll" of ascending success, when his Fate took him away from us. He looked, and sounded even better at 50+ years, than he did in the earlier days of his first successes.

I too have been doing a deeper dive into the Muncey legacy. I recently retired and I have wondering what to do with my 99 point 1/8 scale fast electric replica of the famous U71. After see a lot of Bill’s races and then knowing of the legacy that Mrs. Muncey carried on after His passing, I feel that I should just keep this four foot beauty. Even if I don’t race it any more.
