The money behind these campaigns is truly frightening. Great episode. And Def knew the ads were underhanded and pure trickery. They creeped me out tbh.
Ok, so when you said "Cornerstone Chapel in Leesburg Virginia," I got shivers. I live in the Leesburg area, and that place is creepy AF. They churn out right-wing candidates for local elections like they're some sort of factory. "So-and-so attends Cornerstone Chapel" has kind of become a local political dogwhistle. They're charismatic evangelical, extremely well-funded, very into the rapture and end times (and more than a little dominion theology), and they're trying hard to take over Loudoun County.
Yeah. Agents of order who need to know the truth and believe that without this POV the world will end. Terrifying, fear-based, destructive, but oh so old. Thanks a lot, “Judeo-Christian tradition.”

Papa Murphy’s is also super helpful for people who live very rural. You take and bake the pizza because it takes an hour or so to get home from the pizza place. That way you can have hot pizza even if you live far away.
I was one of those Papa Murphy’s kids! 😂 I grew up on food stamps and every month, basically the day they dropped (the 15th lol), we would get Papa Murphy’s pizza! It was the ONLY time we got to “eat out” so I was very thankful they accepted EBT! 😂❤
Didn't grow up on food stamps, but Papa Murphy's was a treat. Like, I knew it was a special day if Mom went out to grab Papa Murphy's... or if we picked one up on the way to my grandmother's place.
FR love me some Papa Murphy's, it's way better than the other pizza chains! They have some really excellent vegetarian options, which often seem like an afterthought at other places.
My mother volunteers at a pregnancy crisis center in Eastern Missouri. She pays them to volunteer and they are 'training' this 80+ year old woman to run an ultrasound machine and to be a counselor. She will be 'certified' or 'licensed' by them to work as such there when she finishes paying for their courses. Doubt she will be legally able to be a counselor or ultrasound technician after they drain all her money.
Uh no…. Ultrasound tech has a degree & certifications with it and their are subdivisions (heart vs uterus vs other areas). Julie Jo (walkingonlexapro) is a licensed tech I feel for your mom cause yeah they are taking her $.
@@mojaveknitter I know that and you know that, but they are telling this elderly lady that she will be saving babies and convincing pregnant girls to give up these babies for adoption. I have no doubt that if she finishes these course before she runs out of money to give them, she will be running their ultrasound machine and giving dubious counseling advice to girls that think that they are really getting health care. I worry that she will get sued like the pregnancy crisis center on the east coast that is being sued. Either their 'trained' ultrasound technician couldn't identify an ectopic pregnancy or didn't tell the couple for fear that they would abort the pregnancy. The woman almost died and she lost her fallopian tube. The story kept changing on why she wasn't told she had an ectopic pregnancy. These places scam vulnerable women and girls and they scam their own volunteers.
@@mojaveknitter they can, but if I report it, I would just be repeating what she said and she would deny it. And I am sure that they have enough legal backing in the county that they could circumvent any kind of investigation. They could just claim she was confused when she told me. Or that I am some baby-killing liar. Who would you believe, some obvious murdering commie that works for public education, or some sweet old lady that is living her faith by providing for pregnant girls? Unfortunately, it is going to take some tragedy to get eyes on the place.
@@mojaveknitter I wrote a huge paragraph that I think didn't get posted. They 'can' get reported, but considering how red the county is, I don't think that they would take my word over my mother's. I am from out of the county and my mother is a sweet elderly lady that is local. The pregnancy crisis center probably claim that my mother was confused and that isn't what they say. I think that it would have to come from someone that worked there or was serviced there.
Seeing the “I’m a Mormon” ads in your video are so funny. 😂 I grew up LDS, and my uncle co-owns a film company that has collaborated with the church (mostly in the 00’s and up to about the mid 10’s) and helped with the ads. 😂

40:30 - THANK YOU JAMES!! My small town used to have a PAPA MURPHYS, which was the only place I could get 5 meals worth of a HEAVY-ASS stuffed pizza full of fresh veggies & protein, for about $10! I have missed it so much since they started trying to make our town look more fancy & middle/upper class, which means pushing out all affordable places to eat & shop, and removing as many HUD housing as they legally can, so it's very hard to live anymore. Of course, moving is impossible when we can't even afford a vehicle...
omg!! i saw these trucks last october driving around campus near UT austin that said "Jesus welcomed the weird" and I took a picture of it because i thought it was so ridiculous. This is what it was! I thought it was a local church because so many churches here love to do that kind of branding, especially around college campuses.
My response to your sentiments (as always) is: PREACH IT, Reverend! My partner and I are sending lots of love to you and James. Please keep doing what you’re doing. I’m in a rough spot for now, but as soon as I’m able, I plan to donate to you. You and James are the best! Thank you for all your hard work and deep dives (which I love so much) that you both do! Side note (and FTR, I’m atheist/agnostic) but there is a church down the road from me that displays 6 doors, standing upright, on their front lawn (actual doors🚪) which are painted in the spectrum order of the rainbow. They also include the words, “Everyone is welcome at this church.” Out of sheer curiosity, I’ve been meaning to ask them, as a BQ in LGBTQ+, if they, indeed, welcome people like me, and without conditions. This episode has reminded me to do that!
There is a church in NC that says everyone welcome, and they mean that. You want to play basketball all night? They have a court with a light on a timer for you. House burn down? There's rooms in the church. Hungry? Come eat. Never once felt pressure, or even heard them talk about religion, they were just nice people.
quick note on the people saying Jesus only washed disciples' feet: in Luke he met a prostitute/sinful woman (depending on version) who washed his feet with her tears, dried them with her hair, kissed them, and doused them in perfume. He wasn't the only one doing all that. Maybe the oil tycoon's the prostitute of the situation, we don't know 🤷♂
I can't stand that alert sound and I haven't figured out yet how to change it. But if I do, I have a feeling I'll just end up hating the new sound I picked.
Ok, I know this isn’t the most important detail, but Papa Murphy’s pizza isn’t frozen. It’s uncooked/raw. I know it’s a small thing, but I actually like their vegetarian pizzas so I can’t stop myself from being a 🤓. As for the ads, I was mostly pissed that I was being sneak attacked by evangelicals. The irony of them complaining about lgbtq+ people pushing our “lifestyles” in their faces when they do crap like that. So annoying.
I was going to point that out about the pizza too. I grew up on it because my dad figured out you can bbq them before they started putting bbq instructions. It has ended up being one of my favorite pizza places just because I prefer a softer crust and I don't like my pizza going cold on the drive home.
I know. After the ruling I desperately need a video roasting the SCOTUS majority (or some of the others who enabled this). King James is the *only* thing close to a monarch this country needs.

I'm so glad you did this bc I was so confused. This is the kinda stuff my mom would have loved when she was a Disciples of Christ minister. She grew up Church of Christ and was so desperate for an idea of organized religion that was accepting, so I assumed they were trying to target that group to be weird about.
@@maryeckel9682 I'm so glad you were able to take that step! From everything she's told me it's huge to get out of CoC's grip, and DoC seemed like a common step out of the more awful sects at least in my church (hardcore baptists mostly there). My mom ended up getting so disillusioned with her fellow ministers behavior and refusal to even write their own sermons that she left the ministry and church in general
When I was deconstructing and justifying staying in the church, I took an Alpha class and was incredible disappointed by how vague it was. Now it makes sense why my church, who offered the class for free, left the UMC after the same sex marriage decision.

As soon as I started using a vpn and reporting the ads they finally went away. Much like you I completely forgot about it
“Propaganda or Pandering?”
Yes.
Propapandering.
¿Por que no los dos?
my mom has fallen for these ads and she’s obsessed with them. i don’t have the heart to point out how problematic they are
I'm a more progressive Christian and I can see the appeal of the ads. However, knowing the characters behind the ads makes me think the campaign will slowly push harder right.
You need to
@@jaimesfolly i totally agree! her heart is definitely in the right place
My Catholic mom was like Yay, how nice when they came on during this year’s Super Bowl commercial lineup. I went OFF! I can tell that they were making money off of it. It definitely went against Matthew 6:5-8!
Just make sure she doesn't start draining her bank account. :-/
Listening to Jen and James perform the best cover I’ve ever heard has made my day infinitely better. Like I had to pause, explain to my partner why I was cackling so hard, then went back and listened again. 10/10 would buy an album of the Reverend’s covers 😂
I knew it was trap when I saw it because no self respecting, god honoring person would spend millions on a super bowl campaign when they could help so many people with that money.
*edited for grammar*
1.) I loathed these ads before. My feelings are only intensified now.
2.) Dear Reverend Jen, please consider a career in song parody. Maybe weird Al is looking for an apprentice.
I read that as weird A.I. and thought that was a read on the bad AI art for their ads
A lot of Yankovic fans wish we would go back to A.I.
Oooh then Jen + Al could do a spoof of Sorcerer's Apprentice but it'd be Satirist's Apprentice
"He only washed the feet of his disciples" - that's.... An unintentionally good point? Jesus wasn't out there washing the feet of oppressors. He never gave Caesar a back rub. Huh. Maybe these campaigns are bringing the right and left together over common ground in hating them. 😂
The freedom the hobby lobby guy wants is the freedom of having no government at all. No taxes. Just rich and poor. Like in the good old days when Kings were guys who shared with their friends and everyone else was desperately poor.
He probably peed in excitement when SCOTUS made their ruling this week. (Whereas anyone with common sense, regardless of political alignment is horrified - even those outside the U.S)
Back when the there was no welfare and the rich got to decide which poor person was 'deserving' of charity scraps.....
@15:45 THAT IS SO TELLING. "He loves *who we hate*"... I was always told to love the sinner, hate the sin, but boy do these people not believe in that.
Ran to the comments as soon as he slipped that "he hates who..." up to see if someone else caught that. Very telling
I first became aware of he gets us because they were blasting ads all over Reddit. To the least receptive audience possible. I vaguely remember some of the ads being in dialog with the reception with post titles with the sentiment of “why do you think we’re propaganda 😢”.
That's where I see them most too. I always report them for being political
The money behind these campaigns is truly frightening. Great episode. And Def knew the ads were underhanded and pure trickery. They creeped me out tbh.
No group abuses the concept of compassion more than Christians.
27:19 "Wealth is a curse. How do you handle the curse? I know. Pay your effing taxes!
“Agents of order” is a terrifying statement.
Yeah. Agents of order who need to know the truth and believe that without this POV the world will end. Terrifying, fear-based, destructive, but oh so old. Thanks a lot, “Judeo-Christian tradition.”
These ads gave me the heeby jeebies immediately and I'm so glad you dug into it...I knew there was something lurking there. You should do a video about Far Above Rubies. My 8 yr old niece just got out into one of those groups 😔
I hate getting these ads on Reddit, they’re so frustrating as someone who’s left Christianity.
CHRISTUSSY was absolutely insane I made it less than 3 minutes into the video before choking - okay time to continue but that took my breath away 😭
Conservative Christians try not to sound like literal cartoon supervillains challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)
This 150 year stuff sounds like an actual anime speech.
Ok but Jen, you and James HAVE to do more a cappella covers in your videos because DAYUM that was a vibe!!
Papa Murphy’s is also super helpful for people who live very rural. You take and bake the pizza because it takes an hour or so to get home from the pizza place. That way you can have hot pizza even if you live far away.
Yes! This was us. I loved Papa Murphy's as a kid.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! GGs on that Only Human rendition.
Seriously, one of our favorite things on the channel now too lol. Thanks for encouraging our musical career!
It took them six months of research to conclude Christianity has an ‘image problem’? Surely one Google search would have sufficed.
Jenn has the same reaction to email/meeting notifications as I do. “Can’t have shit 😠”
That Only Human cover is a total hit.
It TOTALLY reminded me of the Mormon rebranding but when you said “fake woke” THAT hit the nail on the head
Julie Jo (walkingonlexapro) is a licensed tech
I feel for your mom cause yeah they are taking her $.
Can these places be reported using unlicensed staff? I don’t know what other answer there is… it sucks & im sorry your mom is roped into this
@@mojaveknitter they can, but if I report it, I would just be repeating what she said and she would deny it.
I dislike how I block or say I am not interested in that… and I always see their ads. I do this for many things and never see that stuff again. Why this!?
I try this with political ads, and it then seems every ad I get is the one I blocked.
The mean streets of Grand Haven... a lake town, one of the wealthiest lake towns. Yachts everywhere.
These ads popped up on my Reddit and UA-cam all the time. I felt like I was very specifically targeted as an atheist to market to. 😂
''Propaganda or Pandering?'' It can always be both.
As someone who's family did have EBT growing up, Papa Murphey's was the best lol
Screaming at the “I’m only human after all” cover y’all kinda ate that up 😂
My response to your sentiments (as always) is: PREACH IT, Reverend!
You two absolutely killed the "I'm Only Human" remix. Spotify when?? (genuinely, I WILL add this to my workout list)
quick note on the people saying Jesus only washed disciples' feet: in Luke he met a prostitute/sinful woman (depending on version) who washed his feet with her tears, dried them with her hair, kissed them, and doused them in perfume. He wasn't the only one doing all that. Maybe the oil tycoon's the prostitute of the situation, we don't know 🤷♂
4:40 this cover made my life please always do this 🙏🏼😭🍓 not James beat boxing in the background 😂😂😂 "baOw baOw"
"Generic for Christ" god i want that on a shirt
"If we could all be nicer, and especially if oppressed people can accept injustice, life would be so much better" 🥴🙄🙄🙄
JEN YOU CANT TRIGGER ME WITH THE WINDOWS WORK EMAIL SOUND WHILE I'M WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS LMAOOO
I can't stand that alert sound and I haven't figured out yet how to change it. But if I do, I have a feeling I'll just end up hating the new sound I picked.
Could you do a video on project 2025? I just feel like more people need to be aware of what’s about to happen because it’s absolutely horrifying.
Not y'all's "only human" covers being bangin 😂😂😂
I know I was expecting it to be charmingly low effort, but it unironically slapped.
@@connorsullivan1855 seriously 😂😂
Ok, I know this isn’t the most important detail, but Papa Murphy’s pizza isn’t frozen. It’s uncooked/raw. I know it’s a small thing, but I actually like their vegetarian pizzas so I can’t stop myself from being a 🤓.
As for the ads, I was mostly pissed that I was being sneak attacked by evangelicals. The irony of them complaining about lgbtq+ people pushing our “lifestyles” in their faces when they do crap like that. So annoying.
It’s the same way how I feel about these people pushing Christianity onto public schools but then again this could be done out of desperation
Yes, totally! And i appreciate James pointing out that it's an accessible option for people purchasing with EBT.
I like the vegetarian pizzas too!
I was going to point that out about the pizza too. I grew up on it because my dad figured out you can bbq them before they started putting bbq instructions. It has ended up being one of my favorite pizza places just because I prefer a softer crust and I don't like my pizza going cold on the drive home.
Okay but your version of I’m only human, SLAPPED
You and James doing your version of “I’m Only Human” I AM DECEASED 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
"He may get us, but they don't get IT.", Said this Pagan Minister.
Speaking of Project 2025....😮😮😮
I know. After the ruling I desperately need a video roasting the SCOTUS majority (or some of the others who enabled this).
King James is the *only* thing close to a monarch this country needs.
Why does Glenn Beck have those giant branded mic covers in front of his and his guest's faces? Related: Why does Glenn Beck?
I'm from Grand Haven, Mi and I didn't know about BrandHaven and He Gets Us..but it explains a lot about the bigotry in this town.
Greetings from SE Lower MI!
Jen your such a ray of light in this world. When editing Jen chimed in my heart felt so full. You’re so comforting and doing the lords work 😉 hehe
Ok Jen where have you been hiding your incredible musical talent?!?? I need a full version of your Rag n' Bone Man cover. It is brilliant
RIGHT
As a queer Christian myself... "He Gets Us" doesn't get us.
Can not escape these ads. They’re everywhere and I hate them. I’m glad you covered them, great job!
I’m one minute in, and the sarcastic humour already has me cackling 😂😂
Imagine a billion dollars feeding the hungry and clothing the naked...
Omgf your version of "I'm only human" was amazing. 😹 Just like your eye makeup and your energy. 😻 Oh Jen, I'm so happy to be along for the ride.
Omfg that acapella was amazinggggggg Jen you got pipes!!
the pandering theme of this reminded me of Lecraes new podcast episode with a “former gay” who demonizes the pride flag. he’s on tiktok and he just got fired im being nosy as hell
I cringe at how much I used to look up to Lecrae and many others 😢
I thought it was a Mormon thing at first too, haha. They still do ad campaigns around the holidays but not at the same scale.
18:30 if we go back to Jesus' relevance from 2000 years ago does that mean he loses all relevance and becomes an obscure local figure?
I'm so glad you did this bc I was so confused. This is the kinda stuff my mom would have loved when she was a Disciples of Christ minister. She grew up Church of Christ and was so desperate for an idea of organized religion that was accepting, so I assumed they were trying to target that group to be weird about.
From CoC to DoC is a small step that I also made years ago.
Doing your own cover of copyrighted music needs to be done more 👏👏👏
"thats more chinese in your thinking"
What the actual 🙈
When I was deconstructing and justifying staying in the church, I took an Alpha class and was incredible disappointed by how vague it was. Now it makes sense why my church, who offered the class for free, left the UMC after the same sex marriage decision.
I am sorry as a UMC member who is very happy with the change.
If the ppl making & backing the ads ACTUALLY believed & did what they said then I’d have zero problem with it/them. It is a beautiful message (love one another, be kind, etc.)…that the ones forcing it down our throats won’t ever use on their own hearts. 💔💔💔
The thing about the last missionary to the last person who "needs to hear the gospel" is because it's believed Jesus won't return until that happens.
I've seen the "He Gets Us" ads and I thought they were interesting...until I went to the website. Nothing to write home about over there. This just confirms my suspicion that these fundie businessmen are using Jesus to make money 🤑
The first ‘he gets us’ commercial I saw I liked it. Til I saw the end and realized what it was for. I was like ‘ohhhhh so yall got millions for this ad but none for those that ‘Jesus gets’ 🤔 gross.
The version of Only Human y'all recorded was more than worth the like and comment. 😂😂 Well done!
Like button consensually smashed
Been waiting for this! The Reverend is good to us 🤩
"Only Human" cover was so great, had me really laughing 😂
Ready Freddy...Reverend Jenn bless us with your research.
"So new it hasn't filed taxes yet..." thats cute, they are pretending they will pay taxes
Wealth is a curse but I still admire it, keep it, worship it.
Uh huh.
It's insulting that this campaign is attempting to portray modern Christianity as "inclusive" when in fact it's been weaponized against as many marginalized groups as possible. There was a brief trend of "Jesus is my Homeboy" t-shirts back in the mid-aughts and that was the first thing that came to mind when I first saw these ads
excited for this because these commercials have always oddly fascinated me and no one shares my fixation. So please talk, I’m listening
