When you're putting together a kids' animated show, having a snobbish, catty rich girl as a secondary character has to be on your check-list. Having an uncommon hair colour, like a redhead, is a bonus.

There seems to be a trend of American conservatives dumbing down adult topics like economics, religion, and guns and trying to make kids' shows about them, utterly failing to impart any understandable lesson and instead giving them slogans without any clear logic behind them. It's almost like they want to pack children's heads full of empty rhetoric about these issues before they're capable of understanding them so that when they encounter them in high school and college, they'll be too prejudiced to learn about complex issues with any sort of nuance.

part of having a public service is having that service open to /anybody/. my sister's a public librarian (as opposed to a school librarian) at the research desk and a good part of that job is learning to not outwardly judge what someone needs to find. you don't know what a person searching out any book is doing with it. For example, King James using his library to be able to read these awful books without giving any money directly to the author, so he is able to more accurately let us, a wider audience, know how bad they are! Perfectly good reason why it might be good for a library to have propaganda among its shelves as well.

Libertarianism is full of contradictions. The biggest of which is that they always take advantage of the things they say are bad, if it's in their favour.
The only people who can hold such a contradictory ideology for very long are people who can circumvent cognitive dissonance.
In this way, it's the perfect ideology for people who want to feel like they never do anything wrong, and other people are all lazy. You never have to think about other people's problems or how your decisions affect them.
A lot of rich people hold this view for that very reason because the way they get their money is incredibly exploitative. Most people don't want to feel like they're evil, so Libertarianism absolves them of that.

As important as it is to the conversation, let's put abortion care to the side for now. Disabled folks, prisoners, and refugees have all had their right to reproduce curbed by the US government, both historically and recently. Non-consenting folks have been forcibly sterilized even in the last couple of years in border control camps. California only banned sterilization in state prisons in 2014, due to the testimony of some very brave women who were sterilized without their consent.

I think this commentor is addressing that notion in particular to indicate that - even if you were not moved by the advocacy for abortion access that there are other ways in which reproductive rights have been challenged including forced sterilization.

@@Ehibika I personally don't know any American cartoons that do the same thing as the Tuttle Twins (created by exclusively conservative streaming platform, for the sake of teaching kids a conservative worldview and idea of history in order to "counteract mainstream progressive culture") from a left-wing perspective, but I do know a lot of popular childrens' shows and comic books from the USSR and DDR did include time travel in order to teach kids about history in an interesting way.
Though it seems the American left understandably has a different attitude to history in general. If there would be a time-travelling childrens' show created by and for American progressives, it would probably rather focus on labor history or joining John Brown in his rebellion than meet the Founding Fathers.

It was discovering that the people my church was preaching against weren't who my church told me they were.

They often forget that the American Government tried to colonize Cuba after we broke away from Spain. I wish more of the elder Cubans and Americans understood what really happened but I also understand that they have lived with the trauma of the Revolution and how it has been passed on to generations, including mine and younger.
It also explains why so many go the Republican/Libertarian path, even though those groups have harmed us more than they helped.

I managed to flip through a couple of the books before completely giving up due to how dull they were and how obvious it was that they were only trying to spread their gross ideals to children in a way that just felt empty and devoid of any personality or memorability. The art style was plain, the dialogue was uninteresting, and obviously the messages were just plain trash. Plus, the questionnaires at the end only made it worse. I'm a second-gen Cuban-American on my mom's side. Unlike most Cubans in the US, my Cuban family made it to the NYC metro area. They arrived before the revolution, so my family came not because of Fidel, but because they hated Batista. So I'm a leftist and my family is left-leaning. NYC-metro Cubans are left-leaning in general, but we're often grouped together with our Florida counterparts since of course most are in Florida. My mom grew up in northern NJ, but her family briefly lived in Miami (because her parents missed Cuba's climate) and her dad had to hide the fact he was a Castroist because of all the anti-Fidel people in Miami. She hated the weather and moved back to the Northeast.
That aside, their thing on how communism "ruined" Cuba is very much one sided, and I agree that Americans should stop criticizing Cuba when we're the ones that backed awful people like Batista and then a massive embargo against the island because we were mad the guy we wanted to rule was overthrown by the common people who were fed up that foreigners owned majority of arable land while the majority starved. Their thing completely ignores why the Cuban Revolution happened. The only people who benefited from Batista were the elite and Americans. And before him, the US effectively controlled Cuban politics since Cuba's independence, like with the Platt Amendment that allowed the US to intervene whenever.

I attend the largest state ran college in Utah, and literally this week libertas had a table set up in one of the main halls. I distinctly remember it because I remember thinking "hmm that looks like a table that is trying to trap you into debating with them about their "agenda"". I guess I was right lol. It had a red table cloth with the libertas logo on it and then I kid you not a CARDBOARD sign written on it with marker that said something along the lines of "want to have conversations about intellectual topics?" It kind of gave me the ick

Grandma should travel back in time to discover why all the great ancient civilizations & thinkers evolved in warm climates near major bodies of water. Improvement & invention are luxuries for those who are having their basic needs met. This can’t happen in survival mode. Food, water, basic shelter are NEEDS. The McMansion the builder is peddling & that coffee shop are wants. Also, Mormons drink coffee?

The uncanny valley, hyper-realistic animation cuts started with Ren & Stimpy in 1991, not Spongebob (unless they started even earlier than R&S).
