I'm a hardcore player of Battletech and MechWarrior and I have to say that you are the most detailed historian of the Inner Sphere...ever! All of the other books, games and videos are not as detailed as you, thank you. May the Falcon's Wings protect you
Thank you, I'm glad you think so. Don't know if I ever thought I'd be going into this much detail when I started, but there's just so much story to get immersed in and I wanted to see these campaigns played out on screen.
Argh damn, that's a missed opportunity on my part. We don't know anything about their involvement in the war apart from the year they came into being and the planet they ended up on. I just placed them on New Avalon arbitrarily. Would have been a good joke to put them on Numenor instead until they moved forwards.
Fantastic video! When you said that the Chancellor-Regent would have a short reign last video, i assumed it was because he was gonna do something idiotic. He seems like one of the few reasonable men of this era. Also Paul Davion for the win!
The sourcebook does suggest that Quinn briefly considered trying to retain power, but found no support among the nobility. Either than or some functionaries tried to prop him up and he wasn't interested. If he was going to go down that path he didn't act nearly soon enough, which is what makes me think he was never serious in his plans. I think Quinn was probably a realist and saw that his best option was to make himself the unofficial head of the military, putting him above all the other Perfects and second only to the Chancellor.
Guy who hired the assassin to kill John Davion: “hah this will cripple them” Paul Davion: “well, it’s about time” Also John Davion assassination can be easily summed up as someone killing off Edward II only to see him immediately replaced by a fully functional Edward III. Let the French tell you, it wasn’t a good time.
Definitely not the only one. I think the setting is ripe for that kind of game. But it's no small investment to make and not a guaranteed success either, so I'm doubtful we'll see one outside of maybe some mods.
If I recall correctly Microsoft still holds the licensing for BattleTech video games. Though whether they would actually do something with it themselves or a 3rd party developer would be interested in placing Microsoft to licence the BattleTech IP, well that is another question. Reportedly HairBrained Scheme, the folks that made BattleTech 2018 saw massive layoffs recently after their most recent game The Lamplighters League flopped ,so unlikely we will get any kind of followup game unfortunately. 😞
Fascinating to see the exact budget/organizational/diplomatic mechanisms to show how the borders of the Star League expanded so hugely during the Golden Years.
I really like talking about the various political bodies and how the realms operate internally. Maybe when I reach the modern era of 3025 I'll dedicate a couple videos to going over that in detail. I can't really fit it in with the rest of the history without stopping things dead for a lengthy tangent.
I like those minor characters that show up every now and again that you expect to fit some trope about being power hungry and lead to an inevitable failed coup, but then they're actually really capable at their job and loyal to a fault.
It's interesting not just the military campaigns but the ever fluid political situations inside the houses affects the war. Depending on a chance sniper throwing whole operations into disorder. Or other losses of key players drastically changes the course of the war. This is why the whole series is interesting. People and events shown on the galactic stage. Well done, very well done.
You're welcome, and I agree. This is such a long drawn out conflict that talking about the military manoeuvres has become a bit of a grind, and I'm always happy to get a chance to discuss some of the political goings-on for a break.
Don't knock it if it works. Paul's still finding his feet as First Prince, but he's got his own plans for an organised counteroffensive coming up next time.
Quinn is such a good example of how, despite everything, the Cappies manage to survive. Somehow they can engender absolutely fanatic loyalty in their competent people and its just enough to keep them going. Well until after FedCom, im not really up to date on how they got good
The original version of the Light Horse was a lot more careful in taking vengeance. This is echoed in those two units making it their mission to protect ALL civilians with great zealotry, including their enemies. Catalyst's Eridani Light Horse Chronicles muddied that pretty badly by having them be less restrained in that battle mentioned here, though that's far from their worst retcon in the Chronicles. It's a shame, too, as a few of those short stories were good, but so many of them just... clearly didn't understand the ELH.
I've only read the first few instalments in No Greater Honour, so can't speak to later events, but I don't think anything about their actions on Sendai differs from the old lore. Checking the Kurita Housebook now it says they "wreaked a horrible vengeance," and I think the ComStar sourcebook talks about them sheltering fleeing civilians from the ELH. Both of those are FASA era.
@@SvenVanDerPlank If anything, it's possible that their future zealotry in protecting civilians was a way of atoning for the atrocities committed early in their history, and an attempt to never repeat such events.
Ok, can someone explain this habit in Battletech of executing the families of really, really powerful and well equipped Mercenary regiments? Holding them hostage? Sure. I get that. Dangerous, but it gives you leverage and simultaneously a human shield. But killing them?! And it only happens to like really, really well equipped elite regiments. "Hey, the deadliest, most elite troops in the inner sphere don't want to work for us anymore. I know! Let's make sure their main goal in life is to slaughter us wherever we may choose to run and/or hide!" Awesome plan, geniuses.
Now I am playing Battletech and Mercenaries 5, even that I am stuck in Mercenaries 5, because I cant defend the damn farming facility, not matter how much I try the enemies always overwhelm me, and they always chose to walk into the city making defending the city hell, because I end helping them to destroy it, I have no idea how destroy them and keep the city mostly intact.
I think you're right that Paul suppressed that news so that Richard wouldn't find out, but not so much to protect himself as to protect the military from Richard deciding that retrieving Kelswa should be their top priority. Ultimately Richard didn't decide that, but Paul couldn't have known.
I think you might be adopted Capellan. It's not really clear, and it's probably just a mistake in the lore, but Quinn was the Duke of Sirius. That planet was firmly within the Terran Hegemony for most of his life, and only briefly held by the Confederation before the Free Worlds seized it soon after. Think the mistake comes from the planet being CC territory in 3025 when the housebooks were written. So it's never said explicitly, but I guess he's a Duke-in-exile.
You're welcome. And I appreciate all the kind comments people leave. Getting to talk and interact with folks about the setting makes the time spent on the videos worth it.
I sometimes wonder, how much of the horrors of 1stSW did the average citizen know? Obviously, Kentares was well known, but how suppressed was the rest? Did everyone just think it was another war Over There until nukes fell on their heads out of a blue sky?
I did talk about it briefly after the Kentares Massacre. The intelligence agencies definitely tried to suppress certain information but I think by this point it was pretty widely understood that things were really bad, even if they didn't know the specifics. In the upcoming periphery episode I'll address the news blackout a little more.
More than half of the Draconis March and almost a third of a Crucis March. They got most of it back again, though some of the planets were completely wiped out along the way.

Always here to support MY first lord, Kenyon Marik. Purely on dreaminess reasons.
I'm sure he appreciates it.
Meh. His jawline is an inferior knock-off of the Davion original. Chiseled butter, not granite.
But first he needs to stop taking steroids
