He picked it up when the OoT era wasn't as big, rather the whole plot twist of sheik being zelda wasn't. Even then he was still busy with other things.

my favorite moments are "The Fortress", the party babies and Danny's genuine reaction to the 'Sheik is Zelda' reveal because i had the same genuine reaction, as i didn't grow up with playing Ocarina of Time (i'd heard of it but never played) so i was surprised right along with him! lol
