Man, you talking about Miles right before Into the Spider-verse came out was super interesting. The ways that people talk about Miles before and after that movie is like night and day.
I really appreciate how you express your opinions on diversity in comics in a positive way. It never seems forced from you and it's a really good standout from the sea of angry comic book fans who seem to recoil and complain at the sight of representation for people remotely different from them. Keep up the good work!
This is a gross misunderstanding of why a lot of people have a problem with "representation". It isn't that they're trying to represent more people, that's good, it's the expectation they have that just changing an established character into a minority, which is more often then not done extremely poorly, is what people want. Miles Morales worked imo because it wasn't mainline Peter that got killed off and replace in a few months, it was Peter from another universe. Almost every more recent character getting this just comes off as lazy and exploitative, and they want people to write off people who don't like these characters painted as racist because it protects them from criticism. There are very few characters that work in spite of this, 2 examples in my opinion are the Spider-Man characters Miguel O'Hara and Miles Morales (Miguel more so, he differentiates himself in almost every way) but at the end of the day representation is a good marketing strategy, and if you can save on actual writing and make money by introducing new characters that are effectively the same as the character before instead of writing new and compelling characters, why wouldn't you?
hold up, the TV live action incredible hulk ran on CBS. it was friday nights at 9pm after the dukes of hazard, before Dallas. i watched it like a mental patient. the live action spider-man and and 2nd and third season of wonder woman also was on CBS. also watched like a mental patient.
@Silver Star In 1977, a short-lived live action television series was produced called The Amazing Spider-Man, starring Nicholas Hammond in the title role. Although the series earned good ratings, the CBS Television Network canceled it after just two seasons, along with Wonder Woman, to avoid being labeled as "the superhero network." The series was broadcast only sporadically during the second season. Several episodes from this series were turned into full-length motion pictures outside the U.S. Three movies were released overseas: Spider-Man in 1977, Spider-Man Strikes Back in 1978, and Spider-Man: The Dragon's Challenge in 1981.
I guess Monica isn’t technically a spin-off since she’s a new version of Captain Marvel (and was the only Captain Marvel at that time) and not a Ms. Marvel or a Lieutenant Marvel or a Captain Marvelwoman or anything like that. In contrast, Miles Morales is a new version of Spider-Man but there’s still an “official” version running concurrently, so that gives him “spin-off status” and not a “relaunch” or “remake”... one could argue Miles is an “Ultimate Spider-Man remake,”,and that USM was a Spider-Man spin-off.
Great topic!!! Speaking of Captain Marvel, how about an episode dedicated to the overly complicated history of Miracleman, er Marvelman. Great job as always Chris!
Christopher Johnson I really don't know much about Miracleman, so if you say it's history is complicated, then I defer to your knowledge. I guess discussing the comic has to start somewhere, and Alan Moore is always a good start.
One of my favorite spin off characters is Talon. The short run itself had a few ups and downs but I feel like a hero who is an escape artist is inherently cool and has potential.
I’ve jumped in and out of comics all through my years. Got pretty serious in the early 80s and again in the late 90s early 00s. ( is that what people mean when they say oughts?). One of the things that would ring my bell back then would be a good documentary about comics. Hard to find but every once in a while......... Then of course UA-cam became a thing right? Now there’s more vids about comics it seems than there are actual comics. ( I exaggerate of course). But there are some GOOD ONES. Like this channel. Fantastic stuff. Thanks for these videos and please don’t stop!!!
Loved this episode, definitely loved the Shazam family spinoff books cause there's a great charm to them. The new series has similar characters if you're interested.
Love Spider-Gwen. I have always struggled to really enjoy Peter Parker for some reason(heresy, I know), but find his spin-off characters to be far more entertaining. Both Miles and Gwen are great characters, and I love the alternate-reality aspects like Matt Murdock as Kingpin. Also, yeah, gotta admit that the novelty of Gwen-based puns like Gwenom are a bonus for me, lol.
Is Miles really all that different from Peter in the comics...? Like I get that in Spider-Verse, but in the comics, he’s pretty much a blatant copy paste
Peter Parker/Spider-Man has many spin-off titles given his massive popularity to the point there was even a multiverse crossover called Spider-Verse which was adapted into a successful animated movie titled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Some of the Spider-Man titles are: * Miles Morales * Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen * Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099 * May "Mayday" Parker/Spider-Girl * Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider * Kaine Parker * Anya Corazon/Spider-Woman * Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman (kind of) * Eddie Brock/Venom
Don't forget Toxin and Agent Anti-Venom. Honestly, at some point, the big two should consider a purge of overly redundant spin-off characters. Then again, that will be pointless as they'll just ressurect them again as they're somebody's favorite.
17:00 THUMBS UP for your Stan Lee impression! I haven't seen a copy of something from MARVEL that good since BLACK CAT landed in Spider-Man and they pretended it WASN'T Catwoman! 😉
the thumbnail makes it look like the original Captain Marvel is being put forward as a spinoff, but of course, you merely intended that he has a spinoff cast. no tears after all
There is also a comic out there that shows two characters (I want to say it is an Avengers book with two lesser known Avengers characters,) talking about Wolverine who is passing through a room they are in, and one of the says "Wolverine is on this team too?" and the other character replies something to the effect of, "He's on every team." It was pretty funny.
Batwoman was easily my favorite New 52 book. If anyone hasn't checked it out likes stories more on the spooky/occult side you should definitely check it out. JH Williams leaving the book when DC wouldn't let her get married was a big part of why I stopped keeping up with comics, it was just so disappointing.
Wolverine had a Daughter introduced a couple years before X-23 in the MC2 universe. Wild Thing. Also, what about all the different versions/spin-off versions of Thor? (I love Thor so I'm biased) haha. Loved this episode, and every episode!
As a comic reader in the late 1970s, I rather enjoyed the early runs of She-Hulk, Spider-Woman, and Ms. Marvel, although I can't say that they were "great" comics. The interesting thing about DC's spin-off characters is that they tended to come about in different ways, instead of just doing the same thing with each of their major characters. Kid Flash was never really Flash's sidekick, although he did work with Flash on occasion, but a separate hero who operated on his own, and then later with the Teen Titans. Green Lantern spin-offs were basically limited to substitutes for Hal Jordan, until the Green Lantern Corps gained popularity, and then you had all sorts of alien Green Lanterns running around. The story of Wonder Girl is especially interesting. She was intended to be stories of Wonder Woman as a girl, much like Superboy, but when the Teen Titans were created, she was mistakenly assumed to be a character other than Diana Prince, and they never really corrected that mistake. And then there was Man-Bat!
There was also an animated character called Web Woman. I heard that Marvel found out about her and rushed out Spider-Woman so Filmation could not use the name for her.
Otto Binder is, to me, the reason those Captain Marvel books should be remembered. Their humor was hilarious, almost satirical. (As a glance at almost any cover will tell you). Binder was a terrific sci fi writer. He created I, Robot, the short story featuring Adam Link - which went on to influence the up and coming Isaac Asimov. Binder's scripts are the only part of that series that matter to me. When they did the movie version in 2019, I was fairly pleased, but I'd like to see a more conscious effort to translate the Binder humor in any subsequent efforts.
I didn’t know the history of hawkman and hawkgirl. I just read dark nights metal where they rebooted their origin and they are super ancient and i like they are being kept as important in DC comics.
Supergirl had backup stories in Action comics with Superman generally as the cover feature and semi regularly appeared with the Legion of Superheroes stores in Adventure comics in the 1960's and 1970's. She also sometimes appeared in Stories with Superman, also sometimes in Jimmy Olsen comics where she for a short time dated Jimmy.
Whenever Fantastic Four reemerge, one I'd really like to see - Take the "What If the Fantastic Four Had Different Powers?" version and begin with the original origin (OK, maybe backdate a bit and have Reed competing for the X-Prize instead beating Soviets into space) and show in detail how theit adventures and career developing differently because of the powers of Bib Brain, Dragonfly, Mandroid and Miss Fantastic.
Hawkman is underrated. There are actually some good runs on the character. Obviously Vendettis recent run but also Messer-loeb has a good run and the Geoff Johns material is dope too.
As usual, very informative and entertaining videos! My only request (if not too much of a hassle), maybe put the link of the fan artists' pages for easy access?
The Stan Lee impression wasn't half bad. Haha. Are you going to do a vlog about Copycat characters ie Superman-Gladiator-Hyperion, Batman-Moon Knight, Green Arrow-Hawkeye, Justice league- Avengers-Squadron Supreme etc?
A great video. You covered a lot of info and history and pulled it off great. I learned a lot about the more modern heroes such as Miles Morales and the newer Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel. Happy Holidays.
Another great video! There's a few things I would add to the Supergirl section and your dates are a bit off. You left out the story "The Girl of Steel" from Superman #123 (Aug. 1958). Jimmy Olsen finds a mystical totem which grants him 3 wishes. He uses one of them to wish for a female companion for his pal Superman, a "Super-girl". It was due to the popularity of this story that they decided to introduce Kara Zor-El as Superman's cousin the following year in Action Comics #252 (May 1959).They used the same design from the Girl of Steel story, which was most likely inspired by the blonde Lois Lane when she dreamed about having Superman's powers. Prior to this, I think the first time the name "Super-girl" appeared in a Superman related comic was Superboy #5 (Nov. 1949). He comes to the aid of a female acrobat who calls herself Super-girl and has blonde braids. This keeps the blonde hair consistent throughout the various incarnations.Lastly, Supergirl got her own title in Nov. 1972 after being the featured story in Adventure Comics since June 1969 as "Adventure Comics featuring Supergirl".
The way it typically worked is that DC made bank from spin-off "family" legacy characters while Marvel made bank from introducing new mutants. Which is why Marvel has significantly fewer spin-off characters than DC.
very amazing video! I used to like that's 'Supergirl Movie' in the 80's, when I was a kid! Also, when I read the 'Crisis' I cried a lot with the Supergirl's death! and this was in the last year! XD
I wouldn't call it a spin off , but Gary Gianni's Monstermen was included in the early Hellboy comic books and its my favourite comic series(that and Beasts of Burden) from dark horse even though it didnt even have an actual comic book run.
I'd say Green Lanterns & Flashes aren't really spin off because they usually take up the mantle of the respective names. Like when Hal Jordan was incapacitated (maybe), Guy Gardener became green lantern. Same with Wally West after Barry Allen died he became the flash. As for Daken I don't know he is one right?
The Green Lantern Corps is a pastiche of E.E. Smith's _Lensmen._ They didn't so much spin off the Corps from the original Green Lantern as simply expand their pastiche to include more of the original on which it was based.
I miss silly lawyer She-Hulk comics. She even defended a case against the Living Tribunal once. That was awesome!
Dan Slott's run on the She-Hulk comics was amazing; I wish he would have stayed on that book for a decade instead of Amazing Spider-Man.

Excellent look back at comics history - great look at this unique trope to (English?) comics. Some of my favorite characters have been spinoffs! Always look forward to your show! Wish you luck in this wonderful theme.
Man, you talking about Miles right before Into the Spider-verse came out was super interesting. The ways that people talk about Miles before and after that movie is like night and day.
Because the movie enhanced his character completely.
This channel needs a mil+ subs
great episode. super informative. love to learn the history of so many characters and comics. Great job! thank you!
@Jiub_SN um that's you theres alot of folks who basically hate even original characters. We've all met them online except you I guess 😂😂😂
I will argue everyone wanted the classic Supergirl back after Byrne's lackluster version.
You do great content! Keep up the great work! Long time subscriber, first time leaving a comment.
Your videos are so interesting and engaging. Thank you for taking the time to put these together!
hold up, the TV live action incredible hulk ran on CBS. it was friday nights at 9pm after the dukes of hazard, before Dallas. i watched it like a mental patient. the live action spider-man and and 2nd and third season of wonder woman also was on CBS. also watched like a mental patient.
Do mental patients watch tv differently than sane people? 🤔
@@AC-gb7do No they use their eyes like anyone else.
What about Monica Rambau?
Not that I'm a big fan of hers, but I was quite surprised she didn't even get a mention during the Captain Marvel portion.
She was also created to keep the copyright to the Captain Marvel name at Marvel.
Hah! This time I guessed your "You caught me _" Intro. ;)
In the Beatles song, "Bungalow Bill" references Captain Marvel too!
The Magic Mixture had a song titled Captain Marvel
Your Stan Lee voice made me incredibly happy!
Great topic!!! Speaking of Captain Marvel, how about an episode dedicated to the overly complicated history of Miracleman, er Marvelman. Great job as always Chris!
Christopher Johnson He already did a video on Miracleman. I haven't watched it all, but it's interesting.
@@truefanforum3273 This String of Lawsuits lead us to have Angela in a Marvel Universe, not in McFarlane Universe.
I believe Bob Chipman did something of the sort a few years back.
@@truefanforum3273 oh yes the Alan Moore episode... Miracleman spans so much more than that but yes that was a great episode. 😃
You have got the best Stan Lee voice impression I have ever heard! Marvel should be callin' you for your voice work of 'The Man'! Excelsior!
How come you did not dive into Image comics? Like for Spawn or Invincible. Or for 2000AD for Judge Dredd? Great video anyway. Love your work.
Yay I'm not the only one who remembers Ravage 2099.
Loved this episode, definitely loved the Shazam family spinoff books cause there's a great charm to them. The new series has similar characters if you're interested.
Very glad that Miles has developed in both the films and movies into his own person
22:50 You are forgetting Daken though.
Love your channel!
@@atayamohammad0 shes a poser sjw who anything but a white male gets her attention
Gwen variants are now over-done in Marvel comics, surpassing Squirrel Girl levels of gimmicky 4th wall zaniness.
Well if miles got your attention then read ultimate Spider-Man starring Peter Parker since they’re written almost the exact same way
The Incredible Hulk tv show aired on CBS, not ABC. It was on right after The Dukes Of Hazard.
One of your best episodes so far, Chris.
One of your best ones yet, Chris!
I forgot also another Thor spinoff character, Beta Ray Bill! my favorite.
Peter Parker/Spider-Man has many spin-off titles given his massive popularity to the point there was even a multiverse crossover called Spider-Verse which was adapted into a successful animated movie titled Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Some of the Spider-Man titles are:
* Miles Morales
* Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen
* Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099
* May "Mayday" Parker/Spider-Girl
* Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider
* Kaine Parker
* Anya Corazon/Spider-Woman
* Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman (kind of)
* Eddie Brock/Venom
Don't forget Toxin and Agent Anti-Venom. Honestly, at some point, the big two should consider a purge of overly redundant spin-off characters. Then again, that will be pointless as they'll just ressurect them again as they're somebody's favorite.
I appreciate your love of Spider- Gwen.
Nice and chunky episode at the time I'm usually up chilling. Perfect Sunday morning/Saturday night
The way Jeph Loeb draws supergirl only gives me impure thoughts and it scares me.
17:00 THUMBS UP for your Stan Lee impression!
I haven't seen a copy of something from MARVEL that good since BLACK CAT landed in Spider-Man and they pretended it WASN'T Catwoman! 😉
the thumbnail makes it look like the original Captain Marvel is being put forward as a spinoff, but of course, you merely intended that he has a spinoff cast. no tears after all
Don't forget that Elvis Presley himself based his hairstyle and looks on Captain Marvel Jr.
Wasn't that kinda the hairstyle in fashion during that period anyway?
@@jp5394 im not sure if it was before presley
There is also a comic out there that shows two characters (I want to say it is an Avengers book with two lesser known Avengers characters,) talking about Wolverine who is passing through a room they are in, and one of the says "Wolverine is on this team too?" and the other character replies something to the effect of, "He's on every team." It was pretty funny.
Aw dude you forgot to mention Gabby Kinney, clone of X-23! Which technically makes her a spinoff of a spinoff
I like spinoff characters. The best ones grew in to their own organically and made sense for the plot of whatever story they were in
Wolverine had a Daughter introduced a couple years before X-23 in the MC2 universe.
1:30 they didn't colour in his bolt yellow... also awesome episode! Love having stuff to watch while I burn the midnight oil.
"Oh, you caught me spinning. 🙂"
I love your intros.
The thing that really gets me about the new current Batwoman is that just like with Supergirl she's the cousin to the character that she's emulating
The HULK TV show was on CBS, not NBC. Otherwise, a very entertaining video!
Great video and great artwork at the end of the video
I didn’t know the history of hawkman and hawkgirl. I just read dark nights metal where they rebooted their origin and they are super ancient and i like they are being kept as important in DC comics.
Dude, I got that Superman/Radio Shack comic on the rack behind you. I'm glad I'm not the one who hung onto that.
I live for the intros to these videos. So wholesome lol
Excellent video, as usual. Super interesting to find out so many details of heroes that I've only heard of thus far. Keep up the great work!
0:11 You spinned, then it all came off. I'll walk myself out.
Big on Daken, he was very interesting.
the STAN Lee impersonation 😂😂😂
Loved the "Hawkworld" miniseries, but unfortunately, the story fell apart when they reached Earth
You missed Monica Rambeau during her tenure as Captain Marvel - she was the first true spinoff from him!
Moon knight is barely like batman
A great video. You covered a lot of info and history and pulled it off great. I learned a lot about the more modern heroes such as Miles Morales and the newer Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel. Happy Holidays.
Holy shit, the breadth of your knowledge is mind-blowing.
LoL love the "of some sort" in Marvin's fan art!
Great video, but you forgot to mention Wonder Girl. :(
The way it typically worked is that DC made bank from spin-off "family" legacy characters while Marvel made bank from introducing new mutants.
Isn't Daken considered spinoff character? What about multiple Green lantern and flash characters.
Darken is Logan’s son, so to me anyway he’s a legacy character (sort of).
X-23 is a legacy character as well.
The Green Lantern Corps is a pastiche of E.E. Smith's _Lensmen._ They didn't so much spin off the Corps from the original Green Lantern as simply expand their pastiche to include more of the original on which it was based.
