Epic can’t dictate to a store owner about what they can and can not sell in their own store. Also Epic is a huge company, they knew when they added the feature to buy v-bucks bypassing the App Store, that they were violating tos, Apple in response took them off the App Store...

Seems like Epic Games is positioning itself to appear to be the "good guy", by giving us 20% off.
But unless they are offering apple 10%, instead of the 30% they previously got, Epic Games is making 10% more money than they were previously.
Hard for me to think they are doing this "for the people", and not think this is a way to get a higher profit margin.
I was thinking the same thing. Epic purposefully did all this to look like the victim so people would side with them. They even called apple a monopoly, which they aren't ( a monopoly is someone who has complete control over an industry) apple and google are too giant phone companies who are completely separate. I think Epic is in the wrong here because apple and google are supplying their game with a platform, which is necessary for a game to be playable, and asking for a pretty reasonable percentage of money.

I imagine there’s gotta be some part of the written agreement/contract between Epic and Apple saying that if we’re gonna distribute your game on our app store and devices, we’re gonna get a cut of your profits made from purchases on our platform. If there is, Epic literally has no legal standing and just tried to snake Apple for no reason. L.
(Edit: Yes, ik Epic isn’t suing for money and they want to get anti trust legislation passed. But the specific monopoly epic is going after is apple’s monopoly over the “iOS app distribution market”. Epic is claiming the agreement that devs have to comply with is unlawful, but I just don’t see it, considering iOS/the app store allow devs to tap into the large market that is the apple user base, so apple should be compensated by these devs for providing/maintaining a platform that allows devs to put out and monetize their apps on their platform. I’m not against dissolving monopolies, and certainly not against huge tech conglomerates who certainly are stifling innovation, but I don’t see this case going anywhere.)
Yeah, What I think they are trying to do is to stir up a lot of backlash (via the video, the petition, etc.) so that when they lose the lawsuit so many people are angered that they lose a lot more money to people essentially boycotting their products that it would be more beneficial to just keep Fortnite on the App Store while also not getting money from Fortnite.

Epic broke apple TOS so in terms of a lawsuit they have no legal grounds. They know the TOS and signed a contract with all their games as early as 10 years ago. Apple rightfully removed them from the apple store just like epic rightfully banned Jarvis for breaking TOS.

@Tevy Epic signed a contract where apple took 30% of all earnings for fortnite mobile... The bigger picture is that Epic broke the contract, then when apple removed the app from the app store because they broke the contract, epic sues them. If they wanted out, then why didn't they just leave? It be a better business decision to not break the contract and let apple take the money.

Edit: A lot of people are saying Epic is in the right for making a bucks cheaper. FYI: That’s not what they did. They offered a chance to buy a bucks directly from them INSTEAD of apple. This breaks the contract they signed with apple. So imagine this: You are an owner of a mall. I want to start my business in your mall. Part of the agreement is I have to pay you 30% of what I make to stay in the mall. Let’s say I’m selling a shirt for $10.00 and I have to give you $3.00 per shirt. What happens when I lower the price to $9.00 if you buy from me but don’t tell you (the owner of the mall). Well, more people will buy my shirts because they’re cheaper, and then less people will buy the exact same shirt for $10.00, so you don’t get payed your 30% cut.
Edit2: Also they did for for a publicity stunt. The game is dead and now everyone is talking about the game. Also they’d have to be dumb to think Apple wouldn’t realize what was going on. And, say what you want about Fortnite, but the people that own epic games are not dumb. It was done to try and revive the game.

Let’s be smart about this now. Apple is a business meaning anything that will affect their fundings is bound to lead to a problem. Personally, i’m on apples side and since fortnite is a free to play game, the only way apple could make money off of it is through in-game purchases, meaning they basically couldn’t make any more revenue off of this. Epic basically took millions of dollars from apple. No money, means no point in having this app available in their store.

Epic said that they aren’t suing for money. They just to change the system by legal means. But they aren’t. The breached their legally binding agreement with Apple Store. The moment they introduced programming that enabled players to pay Epic direct, without getting consent from Apple first, they broke their contract.
Apple Store get a 30% cut of any in-app purchases, which is actually quite a big chunk. Perhaps too high. That being said, there are plenty of services that developers get in return, not least very good security. In addition, paying gamers are also able to pay in a secure environment.
But most importantly, every developer who uses Apple Store has the same deal. Epic have been using it for about 10 years and they agreed to the terms. What is their problem? All they will succeed in doing is upsetting their customers. My 9 year old son is upset because he can’t get the next season. His friends, who use games consoles, will be able to but it looks like he won’t be able to play online with them if they are on different systems. It’s bad enough that the last update used so much of his memory that he had to delete other stuff just to update it. If they keep adding things and taking up more memory he won’t be able to play anyway, and will have wasted the money that he has already spent on it.
If Epic don’t like the situation they just had to say “Apple, if you won’t let us sell directly, we will withdraw from App Store” and then let Apple decide. But by defying the App Store rules they have forced Apple to remove Fortnite. That way Epic can tell their fans that it was all Apple’s fault. It’s all very duplicitous.
One of Fortnite’s greatest successes is in convincing people that they need to pay for stuff on it. There is no skin, no glider, no reaping tool and no emote that will improve your ability to play, and win, the game. I’ve been playing since about 6 months. I’m not brilliant but I’m usually in the last five players when I play, and probably get a Victory Royale one in every five times I play. I don’t seek out the latest fancy weapons and stick to the ones I’ve always been comfortable . I stick to the default skins. They provide the best camouflage in most cases. I do ok, and enjoy the game, without having spent a penny on it. I get reasonably good results and enjoy the game. I don’t get how they have convinced people to spend as much as they do.
Like any business, Epic are money grabbers. Perhaps people will think twice about parting with their cash now that this latest bout of nonsense will disadvantage so many loyal players.

Yes a contract is a contract. But Epic knows this, but are implying this is a bigger problem than them taking 30% of everything, they are taking on the monopoly apple has on it. When there is a monopoly on something like the app store, the prices are solely dictated by one company. This is bad overall for everyone except apple. I think Epic has a chance at winning even though apple will spend billions defending their case.
In addition, many times terms of contracts can not be resonable which makes them void. For example, if someone put in a job contract that you would be unable to work with a competeing company for 3 years if you were to leave. This has been held countless times in court as not allowed in a contract. Lastly if that doesnt make sense, if i make a contract that is for a job to hire you, but then it says something like you must work 168 hours a week, this would obviously not hold up in a contract even if u signed it
So Epic doesn’t think they need to pay a cut to Apple. Apple has to pay for all the bandwidth for downloads and other issues for a huge game. They deserve a cut for sure. Just like Steam and Epic Game Store takes a cut from developers. Why would epic think they can avoid paying a cut, when they charge a percentage.

Ever think that Epic is doing this for another revival of their game? It’s not the first time they’ve ruined their own reputation in order to make more money in their pocket. Look at S10. Remember now? Ahh, yes. Epic targets Apple to get attention from the media and also players. This tag will draw people in therefore leading more people to play Fortnite/give them attention. The percentage maybe a lot but it’s up to the application (I.e. Fortnite) if they want it to be on iPhone.

it’s epics fault they signed all the tocs before putting the app onto the App Store so they had what was coming for them when they violated these regulations. It sucks the fact they risked a billion devices for an extra 30% of revenue whereas now they get 0%. Basically the phrase ‘learn to walk before you run’ fits this scenario well. Makes sense, your using their market place to sell your product a percentage goes to the market place owner. You can’t just create a loophole to not pay the market place. If 30% was to high they should’ve discussed it with Apple and try to make a deal not just take it on their own terms to cut Apple out completely.
