Let’s Player Impervious to Time - How Chuggaaconroy Remains Youtube’s Most Consistent Let’s Player

  • UA-cam in it's current landscape has a lot of heavily edited content made for people with low attention spans to be able to consume enjoy easily as well as people with longer attention spans can enjoy the content as it has way more content compressed within shorter timespans. This was however not always the case. There was a while where Let's plays dominated the space as longer videos got pushed more making it one the most popular content types on the platform. However sadly moist let's players have either over time started making other types of content or has no where close to their previous viewership however there is one let's player who does not seem to have this issue and his name is Emile "Chuggaaconroy" Rosales.

The one thing that's always amazed me about Emile is that after the first year or so of his channel, there are no calls to action. No sponsorships, no "like, comment, subscribe". He's also the only member of the extended TRG circle who doesn't stream (occassional co-coms notwithstanding). He's just been consistently doing his thing the way he wants to, algorithm be damned.

A part of me always liked how consistently the same chuggaaconroy has been
Its like revisiting a nice old restaurant, you know what you are getting
but at the same time a part of me wishes he was more ambitious about growing his channel out more. What I would really love is seeing him really thriving doing what he has done even if he has to change somethings around, I want to see him be really successful after so long.
Some of his approach I just don't understand like doing an indepth analysis on splatoon 1 and 2's multiplayer during times they are really not relevant. The information compiled for it is really detailed but I don't feel the need to use it since I won't use that info for splatoon 3
One of the things I would imagine that would help his growth is if he did detailed playthroughs on more newer titles, even if he can't go as detailed- giving others important info for what they are currently playing is super attractive. Imagine seeing Chuggaa do a big Tears of the Kingdom LP like 1-2 months after it was released for example. Hell, we all love his detailed LPs but it would also be fun to see him do blind LPs once in awhile. We all love his personality too and getting to see him react and learn about a game for the first time sounds like so much fun. Like if we watched chuggaa go through sonic frontiers on release and just enjoying him play for the first time.

I genuinely have referenced his Let’s Plays for so much information. He’s always been really detailed about things and you learn some great things as you watch along. I would never have considered Lilligant for my Pokemon White Nuzlocke if I hadn’t seen Emile go into how it manages to have Sleep Powder, Quiver Dance, Giga Drain and Petal Dance. And he hasn’t changed either; last month I was learning weapon play styles for Splatoon 2 that I hadn’t been able to touch yet before Splatoon 3 came out. It’s one of things that I really think makes his Let’s Plays great.

The fact that he scraped together a e reader and eon ticket just to show off what happens instead of using emulators (which he prefers not to use when he doesn't have to) is an astounding level of commitment and passion. I wish I could watch more of him, my first UA-camr and felt like my only true friend in a time where those were hard to come by. I sort of "grew out of him" and branched out, but always kept subscribed and remember all the fond memories of watching him religiously. Part of me wants to get back into his content but I feel like the part of me that was the super fan was left behind when I grew up.
Tl;Dr My praise of Chuggas commitment to his content got derailed into depressing nostalgia talk.

I think what makes Emile great is that he doesn't do blind lets plays. Some of the most popular lets players will make a playthrough of popular or current games, but chuggaa will only play games he wants to, or has something to say about.
He did sonic colours because he wanted to share how good sonic games CAN be, and he wanted to do Eternal Sonata if I remember, because its a hard game to get a ahold of that he enjoys and wanted to spread that love.

I find it mind boggling that Chugga's channel has not only survived, but thrived in this day an age.
I used to love his stuff and would watch it with my friends when I was a teenager over a decade ago. The I hit a point where Let's Plays really weren't something I had time for, as well as the fact that I sort of just grew out of his sense of humor. I don't think if someone were to do the same thing he's doing nowadays it would work out nearly as well for them, but that's sort of just part of the charm of his channel. He really is one of the only, if not THE ONLY, channel that is left that focuses 100% on Let's Playing. Even if his uploads aren't always super consistent or if some of his series can take literal years to complete, he just makes stuff in such an informative and sometimes wholly unique way that it's impossible not to be at least a little interested in what he's still doing.

You say 100% and that’s what usually separates most LPs from Chuggaa’s. He always makes sure to show the whole game. In and out. Every little thing and often takes points from his viewers who wish to contribute to the melting pot. Everyone else either just does a standard playthough and done or just stop. Emile doesn’t stop.

Tim’s laidback nature of just playing the game through to completion is also very consistent. After all this time, he just still does his thing. Also doesn’t hurt he’s one of the 1st lp’ers. I can’t remember if he’s THE 1st, but I know he’s close.

Something I think is really good about him is that he tends to cut the videos off very appropriately. He's good at not leaving you hanging, actually completing the goals he set out to do. That makes his videos very nice to watch, as it's all contained within a single video.
He puts an incredible amount of attention to detail, which is what I truly like about his videos. I haven't really watched much of his recent stuff, watching the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 series lazily, but nothing else right now.

I does sometimes leave cliffhangers, especially in story focused games, which also generally come with omitting his usual outro, letting the end screen linger on the shocking scene.
I can definitely say that in his Xenoblade 3 LP a few years from now, the episode ending chapter 5 won't have an outro and will end off on the end of chapter screen.

The beautiful thing is that most big youtubers have talked about and some even have credited chuggaaconroy as their inspiration for getting into youtube. He's honestly just as much of the face of youtube like pewds, mark, Jack and many more. His name and channel withstood throughout these years and is one of the *VERY* very few channels that has remained up when posting videos of Nintendo games, when Nintendo itself has the infamous reputation of copyright striking videos down in the past; He just might be one of the few channels that Nintendo respects enough to let him post up their games and possibly enjoys what he does.

Emile 10,000% has an appeal with just the kind of creator he is. Between his dedication to what's become a niche, less popular format of gaming content, his positive, cheery, & sometimes cheesy personality it's pretty hard to hate really, the amount of depth and detail he puts into his LPs making a lot of his ventures like detailed guides practically, but also his sheer love & passion for the games he plays when combining all of this. I'm not an avid LP watcher nor do I watch Chugga that much, once in a blue moon if I'm being honest, but he is definitely one of the content creators I respect & admire the most and one of the creators that serves to present a value, branch of flexibility & appreciation for Let's Plays in general.
UA-cam algorithm be damned, he's a man who adores both his craft and the craft of his passion for gaming and he wears that shit on both sleeves, I'm glad Emile's found a calling with content creation and has amassed the insanely dedicated, not even just huge, but dedicated & supportive fanbase he has, all of which he completely deserves. Been watching Chugga for well over 10 years now and he has always been the one UA-camr I go back to. I don't watch any of the people I used to when I was young expect him. He just understands the LP genre more than anyone has or will TBH. The passion, time and energy that he puts into his videos are amazing. It's so refreshing to watch someone who is clearly passionate about the games they play and wants to share that with the world. I've learned so many things about my favourite video games from him specifically. It's just so cool to watch someone who takes time to learn the ins and outs of all the games they play. I couldn't even imagine how much work goes into a single one of his projects, its mind-blowing. You can just tell that he's so genuine and doesn't do UA-cam for the fame or attention. And that fact is what makes him so consistent. If you haven't watched him before I urge you to do so.
He makes videos because he loves doing it and sharing these amazing games and all their information with us. I truly wish I could meet him one day to tell him how much he shaped my childhood and in turn my adult life. I still remember being 8 and watching every single one of his Pikmin videos as they came out, its insane to think how long ago that was. Despite growing up, I still find his content entertaining. I don't always have the time to watch, but when I do I can guarantee that I'll have a great time. Not to mention, he was the reason I decided to give Xenoblade a shot, later becoming my favorite franchise.

I started watching Chugaaconroy back when his channel started with Earthbound. His channel was very comforting for me to watch during my tumultuous high school and college years. He has even helped bring video games to my attention that I never heard of and open my eyes to look for games I didn’t originally know about. He has helped me realise a passion for video games I always had. I may not watch his channel as much as I used to but I’m still subscribed to him all of these years later so when there is a series he does that I’m interested in, I’ll always give them a watch. A lot of other let’s players have fallen off due to mine or the lets players lost interest. I’m happy Chuggaa is still around doing what he loves and I hope to always check his content out when the time comes again and again.

One of the biggest reasons his let's plays are so good, are like you said, they're really in depth, but that's just a symptom of the reason. Not the reason itself. You started to touch on it, but I think you didn't quite pull enough attention to it.
Chuggaconroy LOVES gaming. He LOVES video games, and when he's crafting a let's play, you FEEL his love for the game, and you have no choice from his pathos to really see the game the way he sees it: as a true work of art.
My favorite let's play of his was his Chrono Trigger let's play, because honestly, he treated the game with this feeling of reverence and almost sacredness. He treated it as a true masterpiece, something that belonged in a museum of art, and it almost seemed at times that you could get emotional because YOU agreed with him after watching it.
He goes out of his way to make sure you know the game he's playing is special, and why you should consider giving your time to it/him.

Chugga was the first Let's Player I ever watched. I had no interest in Super Paper Mario but UA-cam just kept recommending it to me. I'm so glad it did because I went from not having any interest, to being excited to come home every day and watch a bit more of his playthrough when I had the chance. Most games I wouldn't have considered looking into, while watching his playthroughs, I gained a new appreciation for them. And of course through him I found out about TRG.
To this day every now and then I pop back over to his channel to see what he's playing, sometimes rewatching previous playthroughs when I can.
Thank you Chugga, for being yourself and keeping the spirit alive.

I remember one day when I came home from one of my first weeks of middle school when my little sister showed a funny video she found of Chuggaconroy's Pokémon Emerald compilation of his freakouts/funny and weird noises. And I had just created my Google account and thus decided to link it to UA-cam and I actually watched a bunch of his videos before I subscribed to him.
Meaning that not only have I been subscribed to his UA-cam channel the longest, but he was the very first.
And to this day, actually watching multiple videos that someone's made before subscribing to their UA-cam channels is the sort of honor of that very few UA-camrs have from me. Not just being an impulse click, not just liking a video before I've seen it at least part way through, feeling like more than just a random entertaining video that I happen to like, not just some content that I enjoy but I have to click the Like Button and Subscribe to them because of how I know that the corrupt and low quality biasd UA-cam algorithm forces everyone too and punishes every content creator who doesn't just keep vomiting more and more spammed content that's quickly lost any and all life to it that made it appealing in the first place.
And that really is hard to come by given that most of the people who could stand up against all that have either long since been pushed of the cliff by the UA-cam algorithm and it increasingly deplorable state as a media platform all in an effort to make more money off of this innocent people, or have since had things happen in their own lives which cause them to either quite or sadly force them to retire from being a UA-camr. Be it because of personal choices and goals interfering with creating content or finally getting the chance to get the dream job or career or field of work that they've always wanted and knew that UA-cam as a career was never something they wanted to do forever.
And Emile really has been through it all for as long as UA-cam itself pretty much and there certainly weren't that many people like him to begin with and he's always just been there for everyone even after all this time. And that's something that truly commands respect and honor like very little else on the internet.
Of course we know that UA-cam is never something that lasts forever especially in terms of actually being a UA-camr. And Chuggaconroy has stated as such multiple times now that eventually at one point he will eventually take a new step on a new path with studying journalism as he's indicated and take his life elsewhere working in media. But he's also not going anywhere right now and for the near to further future.
But when he does eventually go, he will have left behind probably the biggest and most long standing record and ultimate impact on the internet media platform and his legacy that he made with his countless followers and subscribers along with some of the best friends anyone could ever imagine in his life will be one that is unbeatable and impossible for anyone to recreate let alone somehow top. And when he leaves this corner for the world of media, he will no doubt make a much better place with his skill, passion, kindness, laughs, smiles, and unsilencible voice that he will have used to touch and forever change the countless lives of people all over the world for the better of it.
And there's no joke about that.

The one I can think of off the top of my head is Alpharad. He’s talked about his respect and love for Chuggaa in some of his videos. These influential channels are sometimes the biggest influences for future stars and it is sad when they aren’t talked about much by younger viewers, but their influence can be seen and felt. then, years, YEARS later, i was looking up splatoon videos, and bam. he shows up with the most in-depth weapon guide i'd ever seen for every weapon in the game. and i still enjoyed it. i don't know what it is that makes him timeless, but i truly felt like i was a kid again. godspeed, chuggaconroy. godspeed.

He and others like say Markiplier are definitely the kind of guys that bring in star power, being more well edited and more reactionary. But those that lived way back when UA-cam was still growing know the pioneers for that would be the guys behind Runaway guys. Chuggaa being the prime example. And even than, he has stayed very consistent with not only his uploads but the style of content. Since most of the let’s players of the day and even nowadays, they do part time streaming to diversify income and content. But Chuggaa has been a let’s player on UA-cam and hadn’t changed that formula after all these years. That’s the kind of effort that’s very commendable.

It's been many years but I never forgot Chuggaaconroy. I remember his 20 facts video, that silly april fools joke of a Megaman video, the poll for the Yoshi’s name in TTYD, and the announcement for TRG.
It all started with Pikmin 1, and, as soon I started watching this guy, I was hooked into how he was explaining the story and mechanics of the game. Didn’t take too long, but made sure to get to main parts…
Then I got to the parts where his infamous STEVE and blue Pikmin freak out happened, and I just fell in love. I would always watch this guy on my laptop after school or desktop, back when I didn’t have to worry about college or life. Just enjoy doing school work while hearing him do a freak out.
I never thought about how depressed he sounded in Sunshine or paper Mario 1 (unsure if he was) since I thought maybe, for someone with a lot of energy, he would be sorta low at first… then I hear about his story at SMG2…
Emile, even today I’m happy you’re still around you bundle of energy. I wish I could meet you dude. Huge fan with millions of old fans.
