Joan Crawford's life was intertwined with a complex adoption saga involving David Gary Deatherage, also known as Marcus Gary Kullberg. Born in 1941, David was initially adopted by Crawford but was later returned to his birth mother due to harassment and threats. He was subsequently adopted again. Joan Crawford referred to him as her first adopted son, though she ultimately adopted five children in total.

People incorrectly say online Joan Crawford’s first son was “taken away from her”. He was not. She gave him back due to his birth mother’s traumatic tactics for a pay cheque. Once he was returned, his birth mother sold him, then the adoption agency stepped in. Joan Crawford was always hopefully they would reconnect (even though they did not).

Very very sad.. thank you for putting this together. Job well done.❤ I just wish so much that he could have been back with Joan after it was revealed that the mother was just an opportunist, and that the poor baby boy was subjected to (real) abuse. 😢
