Update: The bone that Dad brought in was a femur or tibia of a Roe Deer Capreolus capreolus. If you look at the bone, it is broken at one end, this can only be done by a bear or a wolf. So Mom and Dad most likely have been eating from this large carcass. Today (July 8th) a European hare leg and carcass was brought into the nest and Mom gave Zenit a long feeding and he/she has a nice size crop!
😍 So happy she's getting more food! Keep bring baby lots and lots of food mom and dad, it's still fragile; keep eating, darling Zenit, and keep up the we good work self-feeding. You don't know that people all over the wolrd are cheering for a healthy, strong fledging, dear young one; we all love you!❤❤❤
Awww...poor Zenit!! Sure hope Mom & Dad bring in more food soon!! Surprised haven't fed him enough since July 4th. Sure hope Zenit is doing okay!! Tysm Lady Hawk for this update!! Tc👍💕💕
Hi Bette they have only brought in a few scraps of prey since their last big delivery of roe deer and Kestrel on July 3rd. It is not enough for Zenit he does need to eat more. I think the parents have eaten from some large prey that may have been too big for them to bring back to the nest other than these few scraps. They should go back out hunting so I hope tomorrow brings in something substantial for Zenit ♥♥
She will be strong. She sounds like a fighter, she sings like the best. I don't know much about these guys ( I've only watched the E's ) but she really does look thin. I have so much confidence in these creatures though. This area seems like it should host a fair amount of food though.
Zenit is a wonderful eagle, I love her very much, it's painful to see Zenit with a very flat crop, I don't want this wonderful creature go to waist, like I have seen in the past , please mom and dad, bring more food tomorrow for this gorgeous eaglet 🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤❤ Lady hawk Thanks you very much 😘
I know it is hard to see food not coming in as often as it did before! Fortunately today Dad brought in partial hare and Mom fed it to Zenit so he/she had a full crop before bed! We just take it day by day and hope for the best for the GE family
I hope so too Quiet Eagle! This little scraps are not enough for the growing demands of this eaglet. Parents are good hunters so I hope they bring in something larger for Zenit! I will say Zenit is learning how to self feed quiet well even with these bones!
Am wondering if the lack of food from mom and dad might be due to the 4th of July fireworks as loud noises from those can scare them and other animals. They can also bother our military veterans who have PTSD as fireworks sound like bomb detonating in combat.
@@armywidow6004 This nest isn't in the US, but I feel bad for animals and birds that have to deal with the loud noise because they have no idea what's going on. It has to be so frightening.
@@SamtheMan0508 I know it's not in the US, but all creatures are one and the same needing the basic needs, etc. July 4th is celebrated around the world, I think.
Ok, I certainly pray that my worst nightmare is not unfolding before my very eyes! This is not the first time this has happened but Zenit looks a bit too thin for my liking. Please God intervene and assist mom and dad so they can feed this precious eaglet. Zenit desperately needs food soon. Zenit's life depends on a good feeding very, very soon. I pray with my entire being that this eaglet receives food, and very quickly. Time is of the essence.
My advice to those like myself who are actively following this nest is to watch guarded from this point. Watching a nest like this is always a challenge as we do not know all the variables that go into this area, and Dads state of mind has been debatable since the camera was installed. This particular period in time we are seeing parents who may learn a valuable lesson (along with all that are following but don't know) that food must be plentiful for baby Eaglets to survive. With the parents gorging themselves on this dead animal nearby they are taking the easy road and not hunting any further which leaves Zenit to starve on the scraps that the parents are able to tear off the carcass. If this carcass could be located and removed Zenit might have a better chance but it does not seem like this will happen at this point. All we can do is pray hard 🙏that tomorrow Zenit receives his meal and survives this period. This nest was a learning experience for me on the overseas Goldens and I have grown a place in my heart for Zenit. I will keep prayers for Zenit since we know he can't last much longer with no real food since July 3rd. I will be turning off the nest after Jul 8th if no food has been brought in. Thanks Lady Hawk for your coverage🙏. SEDs🌙💜🌚
I think the parents have done well. they have done well. He is happy and healthy. Zenit has had huge crops most days. I have even seen Harriet & M15 bring less food to their eaglets some days and before fledging. Zenit did have some food yesterday and days before with just the one period they weren’t able to provide which wasn’t their fault. Of course they have to feed themselves, they certainly can’t feed Zenit if they are not healthy. They have brought whole prey many many many times to the nest. To put doubt in people’s mind as to their ability is sad. I must say, the negative comments people make cause me to be more upset and not watch than actually from watching the nest. I won’t give up on the parents. They have yet to make me doubt their ability to take care of Zenit. Trust the eagles! You know this.
@@shirley9240 I agree with your comments, Shirley! As for wanting the carcass removed - why on earth would anyone who cares about these magnificent birds wish to make their lives even harder? If the parents are not strong they can't look after Zenit in any case! Ridiculous notion. They are doing a great job with Zenit. The food delivery schedule might be variable but the parents are doing their best. Que sera sera.
Forgive me for another comment so soon, but here it goes. I have noticed with this eagle nest food supply for Zenit can, at times, be inconsistent. It appears to be "feast or famine". It is either the food is plentiful almost to excess, as it seems, or almost nothing for several days. I am in no way shaming mom nor dad as they are amazing parents. I just wonder if this is caused by another factor that we will never fully understand. I cannot bear to watch Zenit suffer. Being without substantial nourishment since July 3, as today is July 8, that is quite disturbing to me. Lady Hawk, is this "normal", if anything is actually normal in situations like this? I am hoping for a July miracle. As you stated, Mom and Dad have full crops, but Zenit has gone about five days without a descent meal. Very worrisome for me, indeed.
Hi Featherbaby - actually this is not unusual or abnormal as there will be days when the parents don't have success at hunting or like in this instance, there is a large prey (roe deer) and the parts are too big to bring back to the nest so the parents gorge and take care of themselves. They will always take care of their offspring because feeding Zenit is instinctual. The cries that Zenit makes is the trigger that causes the parents to hunt and return with food. In a perfect world, we would have abundant food each day for the eaglet but that does not always happen. There are times they feed Zenit and I am sure Mom is hungry. I think for us viewers we are anxious as we count the days between feedings - the eagles don't. Since this is a wild nest all we can do is watch and observe and hope that they will have a successful season. And so far it is going well ♥

So, you actually climbed up on a neighboring tree and planted a camera up there yourself? How did you know where the bone and meat came from? During your hikes?
As you said Lady Hawk the parents are feeding, their crops have been enormous at times. There's probably a large carcass somewhere they're scavenging off of, maybe brought down by a wolf or another predator. Therefore the parents aren't hunting for Zenit. You can't blame the parents for taking advantage of a large food supply but they must start feeding their eaglet more than tiny morsels. I'm worried about dehydration since Zenit hasn't had a decent meal since the 3rd. That's 4 days ago. Hopefully the parents will start hunting for the baby asap.

Hoping Mum and Dad bring a substantial meal for Zenit real soon. Scary to watch that bone go down the hatch 🤍
It is really amazing how Zenit was able to make the bone smaller by pulling apart some of the inside sinew so that he could swallow the bone!
It’s amazing that the eagles stomach acid is strong enough to digest entire bones. Wow!

How could be digested with such a big bone in his crop?
The eagles have strong digestive enzymes that will break down the bone and crush it in his gizzard - simply amazing isn't it??

Their stomach acid can dissolve the bone and extract nutrients from it that way.
