Professor Kinkella! I can't believe I found these videos. I took your archaeology class nearly a decade ago. While I was a terrible student, the class still left quite an impression on me. Now I'm back in college and going through all of the anthropology courses again. This time around I have solid A's in every class and get nothing but positive feedback from my professors. I'm really excited to be taking archaeology again this semester. Now that I'm not a dumb kid anymore, I feel confident that I'll be able to pass this time around 😂 I just wanted to leave a comment to say thanks for being a great professor. Your enthusiasm for the subject and your stories really stuck with me. I want to become an archaeologist for the pyramids , traveling & skeletons ! Archaeology is a very cool topic for me . I have always took some interest into it but never just thought this is what I wanted to do . I’ve been out of school for 2 years since I’ve graduated and I’m trying to find my purpose and I think this is gonna be the best for me since I want to travel the world so much and see pyramids also maybe even excavate one!
I wanted to be an archeologist when I was a kid. I had found countless seashell fossils among the gravel of a restaurant’s parking lot close to my home, in the city. Kept a bucket full of them for years. But I hated school, had a troubled childhood, and any dreams just went away, until now in my late thirties I feel I still should have gone down that route.
@Crakygamez when I was a kid I loved history. I loved the stories about Rome and Egypt. I wanted to become.e an archeologist but I hated learning. I also had a troubles upbringing. I forgot about archaeology and tried about 6 studies. Some months ago I came from my depression and decided that I want to be archeologist. Now I'm 29 and going back to my mother's house to presue my childhood dream.
Thanks for another great video!! I want to be an archaeologist because I want to travel through time. I cannot imagine anything more moving than holding an ancient object in my hands that was used by our fellow man centuries before I was born. The time travel aspect has always been what draws me to the profession. Thank you for your helpful videos!

How inspiring! I graduated last year with a bachelor in physics and I was planning on continuing my master degree and I had many choices so I got confused and lost. But for the past few months, I was thinking of what I really really want and love doing it beside it's compatible with my personality. And here I am, searching and looking forward to apply again if necessary to another bachelor and start my career in archaeology. Thank you so much for the video. Sounds great! Two things - first, I have 3 videos on college - watch those. Second, you don't have to get a second bachelors - go straight to a master's program but with the knowledge that you will have to take extra classes and probably be a "probationary" student for the first year. I have had friends that have done this. Good luck!
Loved the video, you're a great story teller. I'm studying Anthropology, and one thing that no one talks about is just simply the money. The tuition is one thing there's programs for that but to go on actual trips - how do you pay for that as a student? How did all of you go to Belize as undergrads? Once you're in grad school do you get a stipend? Many of my peers who are going to grad school dont worry about money. I want to go to grad school but the money problem is very real for me. Any advice is appreciated. Again thank you so much for the video, your students are lucky to have you.
Thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you are considering the cost - you should! Often people don't think about this enough. Usually, the very first field school costs the most. Let's say 2 grand (not including flight) for a month (this varies A LOT). I know you probably don't have a spare 2 grand, but it also covers room and board, so it ends up being not as expensive as it sounds (you are paying for a month of life along with the field school). After the first time, the project might like you and start to defray your cost with grants. As a grad student, you apply for grants that can cover the cost (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't).
Amazing video! I Just got my my degree in marketing and media in 2023 and I’m 24 years old now but once I got my degree I got my first job out of college typical desk job. I hated it and left last month after 6 months recently I’ve been doing a lot of searching in where I wanna go in my life and I think I opened a very old door in my mind of how much I use to be obsessed with the idea of archaeology especially when I always thought of the discovery and exploring. When you talked about travelling but not just taking pictures it really struck with me. I think I might go for a degree in archaeology in September I’ve just having doubts about going back to college to do a degree again after already getting one and maybe it’s silly but in my head 24 I feel like I should be sticking with what I got, just wondering in the field is there many people that went into the field that weren’t just straight into college at 18?
Thank you for this. I have been working as as a freelance animator for 5 years now and i am exhausted of the desk job/constantly looking at screens. For the last few months i had this unclear desire to just get out into the wilderness, loose the stability of work from home and discover the world i live in. However, bumbling through other’s cultures and countries as another stupid arrogant tourist didn’t feel right to me. That’s when it occurred to me that i could mix travel and research with my passion in history and become an archeologist. Now hearing you, an experienced archeologist say that you wanted to travel with purpose, makes me feel more confident in my desire, thank you for that.
You can always start by taking a local community college class or volunteering for an excavation in the summer to see if you like it. Getting outdoors in any way is always good for you.

@@abbott8007 Personally speaking its fun and mostly enjoying the bone labs and stratigraphy of different context layers. If your interested in bones like me I highly recommend Anthropology even tho there's labs sessions on bones etc. in archaeology. But so far so good!! I'm enjoying it.

I’m almost done with Grad school in archaeology and I still go back and forth on whether or not I want to move forward with my doctorate degree. I can relate to this on a whole other level! Any recommendations for someone who is not sure if they want to get their PhD or not? 😬
I did a few videos on college choices - they are under "Steps to Success in Archaeology." I especially recommend the one on grad school (I think it has the number 6.3 next to it). It's a big choice. You have to think about what you want to do long term. Do you need a PhD to do that? If you don't, then forget it. If you do, then stop reading this and apply! (and don't spend too much money)
i've wanted to become an archeologist since i was 8 years old, after reading about ötzi in a donald duck comic (lol). bc of a sudden epilepsy diagnoses and poor mental health i couldn't (and still can't) go to school and actually do the study i want to become an archeologist. it's gonna take a while but i'm going to do everything i can to get there!! great video :)

Great video. I have a BS in History and am currently serving in the US Army as a Satellite Communications Operator Maintainer with about 3 years left in my current contract and I've been struggling with what kind of Masters education I want to get with my GI Bill (if I even decide to get one at all). Maybe I will get into archeology because if I don't use my GI bill it will just go to waste...
That could totally work. Your degree in History will help, but you will have to take a handful of lower division anthro classes to catch up. Totally worth it if archaeology is your thing.

I think you should try not to forget your interest in the subject as time goes by! For Egyptology, I really like the books "Lord and Pharaoh" by Brian Fagan and "Temples, Tombs, and Hieroglyphs" by Barbara Mertz. Barbara Mertz also wrote some fun fiction books under the pen name "Elizabeth Peters." It's a series of books with titles like "Crocodile at the Sandbank" that follows a young girl hero named Amelia Peabody as she solves mysteries that are all based in Egyptology. I hope it all works out for you - stay with it!
@@KinkellaTeachesArchaeology I like the first part of this response. At an early age say 8 or 9 I found out what an archeologists was and told my mom that tinwanted to do that. I was into all of the science stiff in middle school and some in high school but by that time I had completely forgotten about it and whent into trade school for electrical construction. I mostly want to dig in the ground as a kid (witch I did) but not the academics. Its not my thing. Dirt... YES 👍 Lastly, I found out that Tony Robins wanted to be an Archeologists when he grew up and ended up instead of uncovering ancient things he uncovers human potential in individuals he meets with. Wow! This video was really inspiring! Im at somewhat of a crossroads though, I have a huge passion for paleontology(fossils) and archaeology. I just don’t know which one to go into, im honestly wondering if I can do both. But is there a difference between an anthropology course and an archaeology course?
I really wanted to do this my whole life...but im 26 yrs old now and in the united states border patrol....I really want to go to school and do this... possibly before im 40. God i would love that so much....
You have tons of time and tons of options. The first step is just to take intro to archaeology, and some other anthropology courses (available at most community colleges near you!). Your border patrol experience is a good thing. Ive known people who started in archaeology at double your age! Start now man - you can totally do it.
Im a student in class 10 th and my exams are going to start. After a month I would get my results in my hand.. My parents wants me to become a doctor.They aren't forcing me..Its just their opinion for me. But I really don't have any interest in physics and chemistry stuffs... The starting part of your video triggered me as you know I want to travel (traveling is the stuff I enjoy) But yeah not for just clicking pics and all.. The few times I traveled I only enjoyed looking at historical monuments rather then the water parks.. I love history with mystery.. Just like the pyramid of which I already watched a lot of videos.. Hi Dr. Kinkella, thank you for this video! I’m wondering if it’s too late? I have a BA in History and an MA in History as well. I studied the Ancient Near East and the Reformation/Renaissance time periods-two very different times. I just turned 30. I have been wanting to get a PhD in Ancient Near Eastern languages/religion, but I have just recently realized perhaps it’s archaeology I have been searching for. I have realized that the most satisfying life for me is one that combines manual labor with intellectual rigor. I have also been studying all I can about archaeology, through a number of different avenues, including podcasts on the subject and web videos. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a paleontologist specifically and loved dinosaurs, as well as studying ancient cultures, artifacts, and archaeology. I don’t think I can go back and do paleontology, but perhaps I can do archaeology. Another thing is I’ve been working in organic agriculture for many years, so I know my way around a shovel, and other aspects of the environment, soil conditions, and nutrients. In my quest to find a grad program, I recently contacted a biblical archaeologist at a top school which had a program that seemed to combine history and archaeology. She told me I don’t have any experience and can’t do it without an MA. I’m wondering, is it too late? Can I still do it? If so, would you recommend that I go back and get a second MA (in Archaeology), or can I get a PhD in History and learn the technical aspects of archaeology along the way? (Or even apply to a PhD in Archaeology directly?)
The short answer is that it's never too late! You do NOT have to get another MA. You would go straight into a PhD program. It will take a lot of looking to find the right one for you, but they are out there. Think about where you want to end up - maybe you don't need a PhD at all. In that case, you could get a second MA and it would not be a waste of time. The big question is where you want to end up. Maybe a PhD in near eastern languages with a fieldwork component (kind of combining both archaeology and languages). Again, search around. Something will pop up.
I’ve never gone, but friends of mine and some of my old students have. I’m very “New World” oriented, that stuff is more “Classical Archaeology.” It’s pretty cool though.
Should also mention is the cost. Many cant afford to buy a piece of paper (degree) or travel the world this is the reality. Those like myself who have a passion and natural curiosity but still meet up on wknds and dig for fun while a newly graduated student with less than half the knowledge or passion gets the job. So please, you left the cost. My friend next to me is saying many people have always been taken care of financially and have zero clue or care that they're are those who must be 100% independent meaning rent, insurance, utilities and many other bills such as phone and oh yeah food.
Just so you know, digging for artifacts for fun is unethical and also illegal. There is also no need to travel the world, but there is a need for knowledge. The “piece of paper” is proof of knowledge gained through hard work and doesn’t have to cost as much as you think. Community college classes are quite cheap.
History helps in the archaeology realm, but if you wanted to be an archaeologist you would have to go back to college for an MA degree in anthro (straight in - no anthro BA needed). The history degree field is not my specialty, so you gotta ask someone else for that. My genius only goes so far...
Based on the videos I have watched you sound a lot like that initial professor you talked about in the beginning. At least in my eyes. I'm heavily considering going to school for anthropology/archeology. Im 30 but reading your replies to other people, there is still plenty of time. In the meantime I was thinking of some volunteer work here in Northern California. Do you know where I can find a place to volunteer? Maybe get my hands dirty before i start school for obvious reasons
Tons of time! I don't know any specific places to volunteer. I think the best step at this point is to take an intro to archaeology class at a community college - it's cheap, it counts towards any future degree, and it will give you an idea if you really want to do it or not.
I know a bunch of those guys at NAU! Tell them hi from me. I went through UCSB, and then with independent professors (not really a field school) for years. It was great.

I used to hate history, until I found out that I could study the cultures themselves and not just the order of events. Now I want to be a Maya archaeologist.
Yes. Underneath it all, archaeology is an academic discipline. It's best to have both a college degree (and also graduate school) AND real-world experience of field school. But don't be discouraged - there are many ways to do college cheaply, like going to community college for the first two years and then to a state school. While archaeology requires college degrees, it doesn't require expensive college degrees.
Professor, do I need to study chemistry or mathematics to become an archaeologis? I majored in media and I am not cutting it through with this field. I am horrible at maths and chemistry lol, I made a personality test and it showed me archaeology can be a field I can be working in and I always loved going to natural history meuseums in my country. I always enjoyed history and I still do I am still aspiring to become a professor, like you, as you said.. I want to become like that guy! I always loved investigating ruins and ancient history since I was a child, just like Indiana Jones and Jurassic park lol I also loved teaching people too. I am a bit lost in my life at the moment .. so your advice would surely help.
If you enjoy investigating ancient civilizations and also teaching, perhaps you could consider becoming a history teacher. Regarding your question, mathematics is a little important, but more in the statistics part (important for creating graphs or archaeological inventory lists). As for chemistry, there are some subareas of archeology that require some basic knowledge of the subject. What ends up being most important in an archaeologist is his critical thinking, knowledge of history and also geology. Geology is quite important to be an archaeologist. I am an archeology student in Portugal and I hope this comment helped you in some way
For the dinosaur stuff, you have to be a paleontologist (it's in the Geology department). For ancient humans, that's archaeology. Either way, thanks for stopping by!
Hello Prof. Kinsella, my biggest concern is the financial aspect of it all. I know for my university years i will most likely pay for the field work, however how do i turn it into a living once im done schooling. I know archeologist dont make all that much but i want the ability to be financially independent. So I'm a senior in high school and I would like to go to Evansville University for archeology is there any classes that you would recommend to go along with it?
At this point, when you get to the university just take what sounds cool! You will need to focus later, but not at first. While in high school, the actual classes you take don't matter too much - just do well.
I would love to go to the jungle and spends weeks there studying the structures and culture of those brilliant people

Great video. I have a BS in History and am currently serving in the US Army as a Satellite Communications Operator Maintainer with about 3 years left in my current contract and I've been struggling with what kind of Masters education I want to get with my GI Bill (if I even decide to get one at all). Maybe I will get into archeology because if I don't use my GI bill it will just go to waste...
That could totally work. Your degree in History will help, but you will have to take a handful of lower division anthro classes to catch up. Totally worth it if archaeology is your thing.

I think you should try not to forget your interest in the subject as time goes by! For Egyptology, I really like the books "Lord and Pharaoh" by Brian Fagan and "Temples, Tombs, and Hieroglyphs" by Barbara Mertz. Barbara Mertz also wrote some fun fiction books under the pen name "Elizabeth Peters." It's a series of books with titles like "Crocodile at the Sandbank" that follows a young girl hero named Amelia Peabody as she solves mysteries that are all based in Egyptology. I hope it all works out for you - stay with it!
@@KinkellaTeachesArchaeology I like the first part of this response. At an early age say 8 or 9 I found out what an archeologists was and told my mom that tinwanted to do that. I was into all of the science stiff in middle school and some in high school but by that time I had completely forgotten about it and whent into trade school for electrical construction. I mostly want to dig in the ground as a kid (witch I did) but not the academics. Its not my thing. Dirt... YES 👍
Lastly, I found out that Tony Robins wanted to be an Archeologists when he grew up and ended up instead of uncovering ancient things he uncovers human potential in individuals he meets with.

I really wanted to do this my whole life...but im 26 yrs old now and in the united states border patrol....I really want to go to school and do this... possibly before im 40. God i would love that so much....
You have tons of time and tons of options. The first step is just to take intro to archaeology, and some other anthropology courses (available at most community colleges near you!). Your border patrol experience is a good thing. Ive known people who started in archaeology at double your age! Start now man - you can totally do it.

My parents wants me to become a doctor.They aren't forcing me..Its just their opinion for me.

Hi Dr. Kinkella, thank you for this video! I’m wondering if it’s too late? I have a BA in History and an MA in History as well. I studied the Ancient Near East and the Reformation/Renaissance time periods-two very different times. I just turned 30.
I have been wanting to get a PhD in Ancient Near Eastern languages/religion, but I have just recently realized perhaps it’s archaeology I have been searching for. I have realized that the most satisfying life for me is one that combines manual labor with intellectual rigor.
I have also been studying all I can about archaeology, through a number of different avenues, including podcasts on the subject and web videos.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be a paleontologist specifically and loved dinosaurs, as well as studying ancient cultures, artifacts, and archaeology. I don’t think I can go back and do paleontology, but perhaps I can do archaeology. Another thing is I’ve been working in organic agriculture for many years, so I know my way around a shovel, and other aspects of the environment, soil conditions, and nutrients.
In my quest to find a grad program, I recently contacted a biblical archaeologist at a top school which had a program that seemed to combine history and archaeology. She told me I don’t have any experience and can’t do it without an MA.
I’m wondering, is it too late? Can I still do it?
If so, would you recommend that I go back and get a second MA (in Archaeology), or can I get a PhD in History and learn the technical aspects of archaeology along the way? (Or even apply to a PhD in Archaeology directly?)
The short answer is that it's never too late! You do NOT have to get another MA. You would go straight into a PhD program. It will take a lot of looking to find the right one for you, but they are out there. Think about where you want to end up - maybe you don't need a PhD at all. In that case, you could get a second MA and it would not be a waste of time. The big question is where you want to end up. Maybe a PhD in near eastern languages with a fieldwork component (kind of combining both archaeology and languages). Again, search around. Something will pop up.
I would love to do the same things but how the hell do you make money while studying and traveling so much????

Have you ever gone to or known anyone who has gone to Greece or Italy for archaeology?
I’ve never gone, but friends of mine and some of my old students have. I’m very “New World” oriented, that stuff is more “Classical Archaeology.” It’s pretty cool though.
Should also mention is the cost. Many cant afford to buy a piece of paper (degree) or travel the world this is the reality. Those like myself who have a passion and natural curiosity but still meet up on wknds and dig for fun while a newly graduated student with less than half the knowledge or passion gets the job. So please, you left the cost. My friend next to me is saying many people have always been taken care of financially and have zero clue or care that they're are those who must be 100% independent meaning rent, insurance, utilities and many other bills such as phone and oh yeah food.
Just so you know, digging for artifacts for fun is unethical and also illegal. There is also no need to travel the world, but there is a need for knowledge. The “piece of paper” is proof of knowledge gained through hard work and doesn’t have to cost as much as you think. Community college classes are quite cheap.

History helps in the archaeology realm, but if you wanted to be an archaeologist you would have to go back to college for an MA degree in anthro (straight in - no anthro BA needed). The history degree field is not my specialty, so you gotta ask someone else for that. My genius only goes so far...

Based on the videos I have watched you sound a lot like that initial professor you talked about in the beginning. At least in my eyes. I'm heavily considering going to school for anthropology/archeology. Im 30 but reading your replies to other people, there is still plenty of time. In the meantime I was thinking of some volunteer work here in Northern California. Do you know where I can find a place to volunteer? Maybe get my hands dirty before i start school for obvious reasons
Tons of time! I don't know any specific places to volunteer. I think the best step at this point is to take an intro to archaeology class at a community college - it's cheap, it counts towards any future degree, and it will give you an idea if you really want to do it or not.

Yes, but you will have to take some additional classes first. I recommend taking some basic anthropology classes now!

Do you need to go to college for an archeology job?
Yes. Underneath it all, archaeology is an academic discipline. It's best to have both a college degree (and also graduate school) AND real-world experience of field school. But don't be discouraged - there are many ways to do college cheaply, like going to community college for the first two years and then to a state school. While archaeology requires college degrees, it doesn't require expensive college degrees.
Professor, do I need to study chemistry or mathematics to become an archaeologis?
I majored in media and I am not cutting it through with this field.

I made a personality test and it showed me archaeology can be a field I can be working in and I always loved going to natural history meuseums in my country. I always enjoyed history and I still do I am still aspiring to become a professor, like you, as you said.. I want to become like that guy!

If you enjoy investigating ancient civilizations and also teaching, perhaps you could consider becoming a history teacher. Regarding your question, mathematics is a little important, but more in the statistics part (important for creating graphs or archaeological inventory lists). As for chemistry, there are some subareas of archeology that require some basic knowledge of the subject. What ends up being most important in an archaeologist is his critical thinking, knowledge of history and also geology. Geology is quite important to be an archaeologist. I am an archeology student in Portugal and I hope this comment helped you in some way

Hello Prof. Kinsella, my biggest concern is the financial aspect of it all. I know for my university years i will most likely pay for the field work, however how do i turn it into a living once im done schooling. I know archeologist dont make all that much but i want the ability to be financially independent. Is that at all possible by doing field work alone, or would i have to become a Prof to make it a possible living?

If anything, it’s easier to be financially independent without being a professor. CRM has opportunities, at least in the US.

At this point, when you get to the university just take what sounds cool! You will need to focus later, but not at first. While in high school, the actual classes you take don't matter too much - just do well.
