The question of "Why should one write an essay?" has been on my mind ever since school (8 years ago) I finally have my answer that also explains why me and my friends, unbeknownst to each other, all turned to writing when confronted with emotionally difficult experiences in our lives. Thank You, Professor Peterson
I agree with what Jordan Peterson said about the power of writing. I am Brazilian, and I've started using this tool to improve my critical thinking, analytical skills and articulation. I've realized that writing helps me construct better sentences and articulate my thoughts more clearly. My favorite tools to enhance these abilities are chess, reading, writing, meditation, and exercise (because a strong mind needs a strong body).
Dr. Jordon Peterson was born to be a teacher!! Thank you internet and youtube for allowing us to partake of his brilliant mind. I regret that I didn't have a teacher like that in real life.
I'm not trained as a psychologist or an expert in behavioral observation, but lead by some common sense I got the impression that Dr. Peterson was, from 3:28 to 3:36, searching deeply into his own thoughts to try to find an answer to the question he was asking himself: “it’s an endless mystery to me why it isn't made self-evident”. At 3:52 it looks like he formulated an answer that, in his own words, is good enough, and that look on his face and the posture rearranging at 3:54 when he externalizes give me the impression that he was combat ready. Well, I, for one, am thankful for all his efforts and courage to speak his mind and generosity to do it publicly through the internet. More power to you! And to all of us.
Power of writing. The best way to teach people critical thinking is to teach them to write. The best thing you can do is to teach people to write. One of the things that just blows me away about universities is that no one ever tells students why they should write. You should write not for grades but for learning how to think because thinking makes you act effectively in the world, thinking makes you win the battle you undertake and those battles could be for good things. If you can think and speak and write nothing can get in your way so that’s why you learn to write. It’s like the most powerful weapon you can possibly provide someone with and I mean I know lots of people who have been staggeringly successful and watched them throughout my life I mean those people you don’t have argument with them they’ll just slash you into pieces and they are not in a malevolent way it’s like if you are going to make your point and they are going to make their point you better have your points organized because otherwise you’re going to look like and be an absolute idiot. If you can formulate your arguments coherently and make a presentation if you can speak to people, if you can layout a proposal people give you money, give you opportunities, you have influence and that’s what you are at university for. Teach people to be articulate because that’s the most dangerous thing you can possibly be and that’s motivating, if people know that it’s like, well why are you learning to write, because here’s your sword, here’s your M16 right here’s is your bullet proof vest like you learn how to use them but ah it’s just it’s an endless mystery to me why that isn’t made self-evident so that’s the sort of thing that can drive you mad trying to sort out it’s like people are there there’s a conspiracy to bring people into education system to make them weaker so a gift that keeps the competition down maybe that’s one way of thinking about it if your students are stupid they’re not going to challenge you so.
There are many things in my life that I missed such as getting the right kind of job and feel way behind in life and I think about it again and again. Past mistakes and failures bring the negativity to me. But whenever I hear Jordan Peterson and Jim rohn I feel motivated and inspired and feel like I'm a winner. The ability to assault someone with your words is an astounding realization. The ability to persuade influentially is unparalleled in the world. A bullet can stop your body but nothing can stop your words.
This is going to help so many people. I can write something, but I am very much aware that I have a difficult time analyzing and organizing my thoughts to say something worth saying.
I absolutely agree! Our mind needs to be constantly trained and what better way than writing? We HAVE to be prepared and taught to achieve what we would like in the future, as you mentioned 👏
As a college student who has failed English II and is retaking it by simply writing essays to pass. This ramble gave a poetic meaning to writing. I thank you for that.
Writing clarifies thinking and it can unlock one's imagination . Was told the latter by primary school teacher . The former had to be rediscovered in recent years . Good thing I know cursive !
I see this constantly in online debates as someone who is a good reader but an okay writer at this point. Those who can put their thoughts, reasonings and experience into a coherent written presentation win. Well, sort of win most of the time being in some situations it's very clear that despite having presented themselves perfectly, their opponents incapable of having taken anything from the experience as whole largely nullifying the whole endeavor. Far too often I see those who are great writers and thinkers going up against others who are so utterly lacking READING comprehension and general capacity to think or understand the complexities of the subject at hand at all they don't have a clue as to how badly they have lost and why and how. (They feel extremely strong about the subject but clearly have no real working knowledge.) That in a way takes the winning out of the win for their opponent being no matter how well they have presented themself the other side has shown itself to be so inept at the game and so bewilderingly unknowledgable of the topic the whole experience was just waste of time. To which it ends with the big dummy happily skipping away proclaiming he won because his opponent gave up and left in frustration of his outright stupidity even though it's painfully clear he got his head slapped off his body plus shot himself in the ass countless times while never having scored a valid counter point against his opponent.
Tcmtech that's what it's like living in a small town or the south. I constantly have to dumb myself down around my friends/coworkers but luckily my family is able to have intellectual discussions. I get really fascinated with the abstract and abstracting everything around us to form complex worlds and ideas and my mom's one of the only people I talk to that can keep up with that
dman , it's the opposite for me. My family cannot understand the abstract in the slightest. They can barely follow instructions for an Ikea lofted bed, even with guided pictures. I still love them because they have done their best with what they have. It's just that the average level of conversations (especially with my mom) consist of cat videos on her Facebook feed. I have my most stimulating conversations with my friends, which allows me to think more about real issues.
Partially agreed! Writing won't miraculously create in you a critical spirit, however it can definitely help you improve yours. Writing is important to formalise your speech and argumentation so it can be not just more clear, but also stronger. This way you'll combine a strong brick with cement, creating the foundations of a good argumentative discourse.
If you have such amazing teachers, Oh gosh I never would leave class for LIFE!!!!! This is what should be taught and promoted in every educational institution. The weaker students must be helped to come on the same level so that they can compete instead of playing dumb and destroying their potentials.
This four minute video was so incredibly powerful to me. It inspired me to fight back my abuser-and win in court. I believe the American public education system has been purposely dumbing down society so there’s less resistance and no intelligent arguments pushing back. I was a local high school substitute teacher a few years ago. 90% of the students could not write a proper sentence. I would receive a full written page without ANY punctuation or capitalization. What was written was basically incoherent. It broke my heart. 😢
I have a professor who spent nearly 3 hours over 2 classes antagonizing us about writing and asking us “why do you want to write? Why do you show up to class? Why do you want a degree?” over and over and NEVER gave an answer. Jordan Peterson answered it in 2 sentences. So frustrating
Makes sense, if you think about. Almost all human achievement is based on individual people working together. In order to do that, you need to communicate, and the individuals who are best able to communicate to others in a way that motivates them to contribute achieve the most. I was watching a documentary about the animation director Hayao Miyazaki, and he was talking about how the secret to his success has been his ability to get others to expend their energy working on his projects.
Agreed! This is also very similar to what Napoleon Hill said about Andrew Carnegie: "One of the greatest challenges is getting people to work together in a spirit of harmony"... If you can achieve that, you've got the money...
I like learning things on UA-cam so over summer vacation when I don’t have writing assignments I just write down what I’ve learned from the video in my own words
Excellent. I have been teaching writing for years.... always good to get better material. I should add... before my MA linguistics, I majored in Japanese and the first book I bought to help me get through that programme was on English grammar.
I remember attending a degree course quite a while back, just when all of this post-modern shite was coming in-Sausserre et al, however they also provided a brilliant practical writing course, to brush up the undergrads skills-I think that was the most valuable course I attended.
1:06 A friend of mine has asked me to critique some essays of his that writing as part of scholarship applications. This is exactly why I've procrastinated, apart from just being too fucking busy. He doesn't plan them badly, but there are aaaall these nits to pick.
What does learning to write actually look like when you're not in college writing an essay? Do you sit down and write anything that comes to mind? Do a written exercise developing an idea? How do you learn to write? Another question: how do you become articulate and fluent? Via reading and writing a lot?
I started writing and reading allot as a child. It never stopped. I have had a high position in a big tech company now for 4 years without any college degrees or certifications. I was a plumber lol I have always read books and I write almost daily. I owe all my success to writing. I would not be me, if I hadn't spent hours thinking and writing.
I agree with his contents cause when i write something that i remind in mind, it alpabethily organize the thoughts. and i think it is one of the way that we can find us
1:50 Thank you! That's all I needed to hear. I can splurge my consciousness no problem and I can get my family to read it. University education from *the* best source while working full time 😎
It's good for memory too that's why I always used to make lists. If you write a grocery list even if you forget to take it to the store with you the likelihood you will still remember the items is much higher. In sales too if I had an important customer I would write their name down to be more likely to remember when next I saw them. Things like that. It's a hand eye coordination thing that trains your mind too.
Please do talk, when you are in the mood; about the changes a good writer can bring in this world. The contribution of the good thinkers of this world, and the ease they brought to humanity in general. Happy livelyhood to you 🌠
“it’s like there’s a conspiracy to bring people into the education system to make them weaker” He has always spoken truth. Thank God for people like him in this world!
Practice, process, produce, publish, learn, repeat until proficient. *Just doing* the work of writing, as in any endeavor ( singing, athletics, shooting, cooking/baking, driving, speaking, investing ) culminates in success. Nothing great is easy.
I suck at writing, but I enjoy it. My Popular Science Fiction teacher would mark all of my mistakes to the point where his critique was longer than my essay. He never focused his points. I was also politely told that there was no hope for me in Asian Philosophy 400. Then I have other teachers who find my work to be lyrical and deep, especially when my sentences have multiple meanings. That's what my icon is, multiple thoughts at once. I want to go back to Mizzou where I actually learned something--standards, but I get stressed so easily. I shall continue with the open university and critique circle.
What he said at the end of this clip is more truthful than anyone will ever want to admit. The powers that be are holding our lives hostage. The question is, what are we going to do about it? It's millions vs 1 in the aspect ratio. We can be stronger than they are, we just have to believe it and come together.
I completely agree, while teaching IFSM classes the students do not feel they should have to write papers but only demonstrate their competencies on the computer. They cannot formulate basic sentences and ‘why do we have to learn to write we do computers’. “We do computers”, it is frustrating to say the least. I tell them exactly the same thing you have said, so it’s nice to hear someone else articulate the value of writing. How did they graduate high school without learning to write basic papers. How did they make it to college. So my first step is to have them know the APA inside and out. I will not waste my time and do not grade content until they have the APA exactly correct; one point deducted for each APA error. How is it they do not know what plagiarism is? It really is sad to have high school graduates without basic life skills. I am grateful the Universities where I teach have writing clinics so now the first paper on the syllabus must be stamped ‘reviewed’ by the writing clinic. I too am shocked that no one actually tells them the reality of things, which is also covered on day one as we pull up monsterjobs.com I think perhaps their past teachers have been afraid of losing their jobs, or if the students don’t care why should they, it is perplexing but I don’t waiver, my jobs is to educate and that does not mean niceties, but realities. I explain to them that ‘you or someone has worked very hard to make the money for you to be here to learn, to give yourself a chance at survival in the world to get every minute of knowledge from me that you can get out of this class’. This is not high school where classes are free, those days are over for you welcome to survival of adulthood.
One thing that I think its underemphasized in educational writing is that the necessity of psychological maturity for good writing is never emphasized. Sometimes, the teachers themselves can be negative examples of such things.
Excerpt from Schiller's 'The Walk' (literal translation): 'Writing lends body and voice to mute thought, through the centuries' stream it is carried by the talking sheet. There the mist of madness melts away before the wondrous gaze, And the constructs of night give way to the light of day. Man breaks his bonds. Blessed! He tore them apart'. German original 'Der Spaziergang' (Friedrich Schiller, 1795): ...'Körper und Stimme leiht die Schrift dem stummen Gedanken, Durch der Jahrhunderte Strom trägt ihn das redende Blatt. I've realized that writing helps me construct better sentences and articulate my thoughts more clearly. My favorite tools to enhance these abilities are chess, reading, writing, meditation, and exercise (because a strong mind needs a strong body).
Jordan Peterson must be one of the most brilliant thinkers alive today and
at the same time a teacher like no other.
Writing is a tool I carry with me now at all times. Jake UK
Such an insightful comment, man!
@@arhabersham Thanks, Alfredo!
This is one of Jordan Peterson's greatest hits.
This message is DEADLY
Im 26 and only found out about why I should write things at 25.
Same here, verbatium. Life has become tremendously better in every conceivable way for me because of this daily habit.
I could just listen to him hours and hours, days and days... God bless him!!!
I love teaching people to write. It’s one of the best jobs I’ve ever had.
Excuse me mister….thank you soooooo much for writing it all down!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I'm glad I saw this. Now when I'm in a bad situation instead of overthinking I just write all of it down and my mind does the work
3:05 "Teach people to be articulate because thats the most dangerous thing you can possibly be." Is just a staggering phrase.
Excellent message! I strive to make writing a priority because I know what it does to your and a result your verbal communication is sharper.
what I would have given to be taught by this here gentleman.
Well luckily you still have access to his knowledge through youtube.
think of those guys who didnt have Dr Peterson when they were young

There are many things in my life that I missed such as getting the right kind of job and feel way behind in life and I think about it again and again.
Past mistakes and failures bring the negativity to me. But whenever I hear Jordan Peterson and Jim rohn I feel motivated and inspired and feel like I'm a winner.
By hearing such wonderful messages I feel great and all the negativity goes away.
I need everyday such kind of motivation and inspiration.
Thank you so much Sir JP.
You are great.
I don't wish he could be my teacher but by listening to his advice I'm already his students and thanks for uploading this video. UA-cam is great blessing if used properly.
Great respect from India, Pune Maharashtra.
The only professor that would make me consider a major change.
The ability to assault someone with your words is an astounding realization. The ability to persuade influentially is unparalleled in the world. A bullet can stop your body but nothing can stop your words.
Jordan is a national treasure! I always watch his lectures and keep making reading lists based on his great recommendations.
This is so powerful. I recently just learned that writing actually transforms the brain in deep ways!
This is going to help so many people.
I can write something, but I am very much aware that I have a difficult time analyzing and organizing my thoughts to say something worth saying.
Perfect video to watch before writing a last minute essay...
As a first year secondary teacher at 21, i'm honestly so inspired by this man. Also, your description meant i had to subscribe ahaha
(They feel extremely strong about the subject but clearly have no real working knowledge.)
That in a way takes the winning out of the win for their opponent being no matter how well they have presented themself the other side has shown itself to be so inept at the game and so bewilderingly unknowledgable of the topic the whole experience was just waste of time.
Relax it’s just a debate lol.
Even when he's sitting down and taking a break, he's teaching
His eloquence is brilliant!
Writing is really important . I will write that this video on writing about the power of writing has made me to write .
Now i love writing .
Finally found the video where Peterson reviews my essays
Now i desperately want the writing guide he is talking about...
Writing is part of my life now in the UK and I can see life improving around me everyday.
He just revealed the essence of my essays
Preach Jordan Preach Jordan 🙌🏿 !
Excellent. I have been teaching writing for years.... always good to get better material.
I should add... before my MA linguistics, I majored in Japanese and the first book I bought to help me get through that programme was on English grammar.
The message of this vid it's absolutely true. Every single word. And his articulate speech it's the proof.
That conclusion he made at the end is actually a good one... even tho its just out of thin air
My words are my strongest weapon!!!
Hi pat,
It's been years due to you i was introduced to JP thanks for this ☺️☺️☺️☺️
I started writing and reading allot as a child. It never stopped. I have had a high position in a big tech company now for 4 years without any college degrees or certifications. I was a plumber lol I have always read books and I write almost daily. I owe all my success to writing. I would not be me, if I hadn't spent hours thinking and writing.
What would you write about my friend? Just thoughts throughout the day? An event?
“Keeps the competition down” very good
I agree with his contents cause when i write something that i remind in mind, it alpabethily organize the thoughts. and i think it is one of the way that we can find us
i luv this prof's articulation and understanding of critical issues
One of the best JBP videos ever.

Mental Circus Podcast Common sense, not genius.
Yes I agree with this video it makes more sense to me it's practical and it's useful in everyday life
I want that green smoothie... I want it bad
Happy livelyhood to you 🌠
Thank you jordan peterson
Dr peterson is the great teacher of today
It’s cool to see him interact as a college teacher
Maybe because the teachers themselves don't know the depth of writing.
The truth of this hurts my heart. I love to write and I love to teach others to write as well.

Great talk! I wonder what his opinion would be about handwriting versus writing with a computer/typewriter.
Thank you 🙏
I was looking for the lecture since seeing it was taken down on the Motivation2study channel.
Thanks. I downloaded the doc. will read carefully
One thing that I think its underemphasized in educational writing is that the necessity of psychological maturity for good writing is never emphasized. Sometimes, the teachers themselves can be negative examples of such things.
Excerpt from Schiller's 'The Walk' (literal translation):
'Writing lends body and voice to mute thought, through the centuries' stream it is carried by the talking sheet. There the mist of madness melts away before the wondrous gaze, And the constructs of night give way to the light of day.
Man breaks his bonds. Blessed! He tore them apart'.
German original 'Der Spaziergang'
(Friedrich Schiller, 1795):
It's sad but true that in SOME area public opinion without reasoning could be more powerful than reasoning...
George Cukor's "My Fair Lady" (1964). Skill in articulation is and likely always was vital to the strength and quality of one's experience in life.
