If it’s a busy nest and you check in often (which you will because it’s fascinating), the batteries will run dead in a day. Even with the solar, battery discipline is key.
@@BeakPeeker yeah, it would be perfect with a raised wire floor, drainage holes in the bottom and some air flow holes. Looks good, though. Which solar panel and camera are you using?
Great video - inspiring! Does the camera and solar panel need to be carefully matched? Or do all these solar panels tend to produce the same voltage? Can they overload the camera if the sun is too strong, or is there clever circuitry to stop that happening?
The narration & channel description says "we build birdhouses equipped w/solar-powered cameras." If and when you make them available to the public for purchase, will you let those who of us who follow your channel know? For us older, & non-handy people, thank you, it was beautiful to watch the bluebirds' progress in the nestbox.
My blues are always on top of the roof how do you keep the poop off the solar panel plus mine solar panel gets hot. Great video can you post the measurements for each piece? Also what was the silicon sealer you used? Thank you 😊
I find that they roost on the highest point. Which would be that elevated tab on the back. The panel does get hot but i have tried to dissipate it a bit with the double thickness roof. The next gen models will have a bit more ventilation. It isn’t that big of a problem in PA because the days here are still a bit chilly. Temperature might play a part if there is a second clutch though. These cameras have a built in thermometer so i’ll be able to monitor that too. The silicone is just a basic sealant from Home Depot. Thanks for watching!
I love this guy's work too and he answers questions! Try adding four blocks to the roof and place a larger "shade roof" over the primary roof. A larger solar panel will fit on the upper roof and it is barely any extra work. Just imagine a roof over a roof. I used a wifi thermostat (Ewelink WiFi Temperature works with Alexa/Google)and figure while under full sun it is is cooler by 25°F. I learned this when a house wren flew within 5 feet away and started vigorously serenading me (beautiful songs) then fly back to her box and back. I finally figured her chicks were roasting alive in her nest box. Luckily, I had a mister sprinkler and cooled the box down for the rest of the day. Glueing one inch blocks to the roof, then screwing a second roof with that airspace between, not only cooled off the box but generally protected it from the UV and rain elements. Next spring I will easily replace the faux roof for the third time. If you live in the frigid north, you might also one to consider small vent holes with pivoting covers at the top of the box under the roof line. During the early spring, keep them closed and open them summer.
Would you please offer some dimensions? I understand you may sell these, but I'm not a very creative woodworker and guessing while watching your video could turn this into a NO-bird birdhouse. Thanks (in advance). (ps. I checked all the replies, unlike some of the others asking for camera or solar models, and didn't see any dimensions).
The camera has a glossy black finish. So i think they notice a bit of a reflection. I wouldnt say they are scared but they do initially notice it. It becomes a non issue after 30 seconds.
So far I am not happy with any of my solar products, if the sun isn’t shining right on them they don’t work. Now if this holds a charge and still works when shade or clouds come that’s better but still have reservations on it.
But the solar panel that charges?...because the Blink camera does not have a lithium battery, it takes normal AA batteries, does this camera accept rechargeable batteries?...and are they the ones that the solar panel charges?...Thank you
Nice bird house. Thanks for the video.
Love the way it looks. Thanks
Thanks for this excellent video! Would love to have links to the solar panel and camera you are using.
oh yes .. me too

This house is so freaking cool. Makes me want to build one for myself.
thanks for watching!
Way cool project for the weekend.
Go for it! Support those song birds.
Great project!
Would you mind sharing the model of the solar panel?
Thanks for watching! It’s a Wasserstein brand with a micro usb connector.
Thank you! Your video inspired me, I'm going to build one too.
Do you think batteries alone wouldn't be enough for Blink Cameras in this project?
Thats great! Go for it!

Love it. How about drainage holes in the bottom?❤
Water doesnt really pool but it would be nice for airflow. As my carpentry skills improve so will the houses! Thanks for watching, stay tuned!

What solar panel did you use? What camera? Camera has motion detection?
How may I purchase one of your birdhouses? I loved your video and I want to one of these beauties on my property. Thank you!
Great idea. I like how u left their bit natural
I have had great success with 1-3/8" holes because Sparrows don't get in and drag out the baby bluebirds . A tapper face helps a lot as well
awesome work, I would add wood glue as well to help seal and protect
I like the idea but a little extra airflow is not a bad thing. It can get hot it there.

Great video, where can i purchase the camera thanks
What camera and solar panel setup is that? I don't see the link in your description.
What kind/brand of camera is that?
Where can you buy camera and solar panel only?
Do you have measurements for the birdhouse parts? Different bird houses?
Great work :) Is it reliable with solar panel but no battery ?
Anyone know the model of the camera and solar power? Longevity? Thanks!
Pretty sure it's a blink
still no info on solar panel or camera

What are the measurements of the bird house?
Always at least 8 inches above the deck should the hole be.
Blink Outdoor Camera, that's the answer!
I saw nothing on Blink's website that looked anything like what I saw on this video. We sure do wish we had some part numbers or product names.
@rogave: No, he said a Blink camera battery will run out in no time.
hi, i need to know where to get the camera and solar panel. thnks
To attach it to a wall would you just use the excess wood on the top of the bird house ?
This looks great. What are the dimensions?
The floor should be inside as the water will get in with the floor outside, no drip off
This is very true! Thanks for watching.
Wow! Succinct!
The irony is that no one wants a video full of sales, but we all want to know about the solar panel and video camera.
Thanks for watching!
