      As an American, I guessed November 11 because that's when Veterans' Day is in the US. It sounds like the UK has something similar.

      @@erickpoorbaugh6728 In the states Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day but was later changed in 1954 to cover all veterans from all of our wars. My neighbor back home actually fought in WWI and had a newspaper with the headline "War is over, Armistice has been Signed!" When he died, my mom got that newspaper and I believe it is still in our house today.

    Re: Free Speech - The United States is the only country whose constitution explicitly confers a right of free speech and whose legal system places such strong emphasis on that right. For example, "hate speech" is generally protected under the US Constitution, whereas in the legal systems of other developed countries (and much of international law), the speaker's right to speak freely may be outweighed by the target's right to live peacefully and not be subjected to hate speech. It's a fascinating area of comparative law, and I'm not advocating either strategy here. Just a comment (that I realize you didn't ask for) 😀

      Also I think the US was really one of the first countries to have freedom of speech, so that has always stuck in our minds as a uniquely American thing even though most other first world countries adopted it later on.

      +Molly O'Brien Burning the U.S. flag--while it is a despicable act as far as I (an American) am concerned--is in fact protected under the U.S. Constitution as an act of free speech. See Texas V. Johnson 1989 (Supreme Court decision). The decision was not unanimous. The ruling was 4 to 5, but the majority wins.

    The U.S. Constitution refers to freedom of speech directly, that's why we're so proud of it in America! And no we don't think we're the only ones who can speak freely 😂 it's just a protected right we have which is great!

      TheRenaissanceman65, founding fathers of the United States were up against a lot. The whole reason for people leaving Europe was because of the Catholic church and it's ways. That's where "Freedom of Religion" became a thing. At the time of separation, no one could speak badly about the Catholic religion or State because they would be persecuted if they did. Thus, "Freedom of Speech" was born.

      TheRenaissanceman65 You have just proven that you fundamentally do not understand the basic concept of "freedom of speech".
      You: "We have freedom of speech because everything is allowed that has not been disallowed."
      Excuse while I go have a BIG American laughing fit. Leftwing would-be tyrants just love imbeciles like you. You are the very definition of sheeple.

    • @surayaranjber4740

      TheRenaissanceman65 it’s actually really important to have that right protected. If anyone ever has to go to court for saying certain things, it protects them. This comes in hand during times of protest. Protest itself is also a right but having free speech emphasizes that. Without this protected right, a lot of significant things that has built our country wouldn’t have happened and we might have been where we are at today

    • @brandonflorida1092

      @TheRenaissanceman65 The UK has exercised prior restraint on the press and has hate speech laws. The US government can do neither of these things.

  • @secolerice

    The Freedom of Speech in the US Constitution is, per the Founders, especially a freedom of political speech against the government. If you look at the history of England, and for that matter Europe in general, saying things against the monarchy and the feudal lords could get you killed. This is also why freedom of religion is included in the First Amendment along with speech. This ties in to your test question regarding Bloody Mary. She, to quote Wikipedia, "was the Queen of England and Ireland from July 1553 until her death. Mary is best known for her aggressive and bloody pursuit of the restoration of Roman Catholicism in England and Ireland in an attempt to reverse the English Reformation of her father, Henry VIII." The Founders of the US did not want that sort of thing to happen here if at all possible. The full amendment is "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

      Historically your probally right, but in the context of today's world very few countries don't have freedom of speech. But the problem these days is that's in grave danger of being lost, as if you don't agree with some of these growing trends, they will try and cancel you to silence your freedom to disagree with what their pushing.

    • @baraxor

      The "constitution" part of the UK's "constitutional monarchy" merely means a series of non-statutory traditions adopted to promote the supremacy of the Parliament, and the Government sanctioned by it, over the monarch, buttressed by a few key laws (which of course can be altered or abolished by the Parliament).
      Even the courts don't know what they're doing.

    Kinder chocolate surprise eggs are still banned by the FDA. It's considered an accidental choking hazard when non-edible contents are surrounded by edible parts. The Kinder eggs that are not banned are the ones that are packaged with two compartments: chocolate candy in one half, toy in the other. This packaging is not considered a choking hazard.

    Freedom of speech in the US is ironclad since the freedom is explicitly protected. In the UK, Parliament can - and has - passed exceptions to the freedom, whereas in the US the Constitution itself must be amended (extremely difficult at best, and most often impossible).
    The fact that it is much easier to curtail freedom of speech in the UK is one of the reasons Americans rightfully brag about the quality of freedom of speech in the USA vs. UK.
    There's your lesson, Brits. Hope you've learned something (wouldn't that be a refreshing sight!), and ... you're welcome!

    • @tacosmexicanstyle7846
      @tacosmexicanstyle7846 6 років тому

      NossohSeven it doesn't really matter all that much. The constitution is a double edged sword really, it's hard to amend but that also means you probably won't ever make gun law changes either. People are obsessed with the constitution to an uncanny degree... it also means groups like the KKK can easily get away with their activities, meanwhile extremist groups like Britain First are considered criminals. At the end of the day, the US constitution protects against government tyranny but we already have the Queen for that purpose

    • @tacosmexicanstyle7846
      @tacosmexicanstyle7846 6 років тому

      +Electronics For Fun lol
      The Queen can dismiss the government. She can fire the PM. She did this to Australia's government in 1975 to avoid a government shutdown. It is the only one of its kind in Australian modern history, meanwhile the US has had 17 shutdowns since then because there is no adequate balance of power and it is very hard to impeach a President. The Queen can't be held hostage because she has the armed forces. The British Army does not follow the Prime Minister, they take orders from the Queen. Hence, the government can't hold her hostage. Bet you didn't know that...
      I agree with +TheRenaissanceman65, it's hard to amend and that's what makes it dangerous. The issue is that people technically have the right to say whatever they want in the US, but the US is also a place where PC runs rampant and you end up being controlled even more than a country like the UK where free speech isn't even protected...

    • @bigdream_dreambig
      @bigdream_dreambig 6 років тому +2

      TheRenaissanceman65 "The trouble with a written constitution is it's so hard to amend it." Actually, no. From the American perspective, this is its strength. In any democracy, there's always the danger of a majority voting to remove the rights of a minority. The Constitution makes sure that those laws and rights which we believe are most fundamental and critical cannot be removed without a seismic shift in public opinion.

    Everywhere in the world there are limits on free speech, like if you yell fire in the middle of a crowd that's illegal. But in the US there are less limits on free speech than in the UK. For example hate speech is legal in the US while I'm pretty sure it's illegal in the UK. In both countries you can legally criticize the government, which is basically why freedom of speech laws are important. Beyond that, even comparing them is making a mountain out of a mole hill, but still the US has more freedom of speech, whether you think that's a good thing or a bad thing is another issue.

    Freedom of speech is defined differently in various countries but it is enshrine in the bill of rights. Most attempts to restrict public speech or to obtain prior restraint on newspapers have been found to be unconstitutional. Many places (such as China) will arbitrarily decide what can or not be said.

    A useless fact. I was named after my Aunt Kay. She was in the military in WWII. She was a mechanic and she worked with Princess Elizabeth. She is the one that actually taught her to drive. She told us it was because they said she had to know how to drive in case something happened to her driver. And Queen Elizabeth still loves to drive. True fact. Almost every country in the world has a constitution, including Commonwealth countries that never had a revolution. What is unique for the UK is that there is not only no single constitutional document, there is no set of entrenched laws against which other Acts of Parliament can be measured, and if found to be contrary to the principles and protections guaranteed by the special acts, can be declared as illegitimate by the courts.
    So, every Act of Parliament has equal force and effect, and can be amended or abolished at any time by the ordinary legislative process. No Act of Parliament guarantees anything, because the Parliament can change any law or alleged right as it sees fit.

    I'm from Albuquerque New Mexico and was able to get all but three of them right. I think the reason for this is we still learn European history in school because it's still part of our history, but the U.S. history (I'm assuming this.) Probably isn't taught much in schools in the UK because it's probably not taught much in schools anywhere outside the U.S. as its only history to the U.S., if that makes sense.

      Theres questions in that test that make no sense why anyone would need to know them, unless your the engineer who built it, ie the height of the london Eye, like me asking you what size is the eye ball on the face of Thomas Jefferson on mount rushmore, like who would know the answer to that.

      Not knowing that a country exists and not knowing which side it fought on in a war are a little different. European history is hard because the countries and borders and sovereignty change every two seconds and alliances break and forge all the time. If you were to ask me whether Bulgaria even existed in 1918 I honestly couldn't tell you, the borders and sovereign states were very different then and it's hard to imagine how much Europe has changed.

    It's a Wonder that your citizenship test did not bring up the Magna Carta and ask what it was and why it was important. I mean, I had to learn about it and know why it was important. In fact,if I remember my history,although it was fundamental to your country, it also inspired our country too and our Constitution[U.S.].

  • @navatouch

    The UK was always an example for a country without a written constitution in my school. Whenever I saw a multiple choice question "which country doesn't have a written constitution?", I just automatically looked for the UK. I'm quite surprised that this fact isn't well-known for Brits. Am I supposed to know how many times my country has held the Olympic anyway? I wasn't even born to see those Olympics.

    Very cool! i am wondering. do certain areas of London/England have accents, or do not all Brits have accents? i was watching Harry Potter or something else and notices Emma Watson's accent, though she's British, doesn't really have an accent. you two have the most British accent i've heard, along with another channel i follow. but i love accents. but i'm also wondering, living in London, does London carry the same products (soap shampoo etc.) like dove or head and shoulders, (just to name a few) that America carries? i def like to know how London and America differ with products. i know they differ in snacks, from Love & London's channel (the rice krispie treats, pop tarts snacks) that was shown in the video.

      England has regional accents just like the U.S. does, so someone from Manchester would have a different accent than someone from London, just like someone from Minnesota has a different accent than someone from Alabama. For most Americans (including me), the British accent at first might sound like it's all the same thing, but if you listen to a variety of British speakers, you'll start to notice differences.
      I remember I first started becoming aware of different regional British accents thanks to Daphne Moon from Frasier...which is kind of funny in itself, because Jane Leeves, who played Daphne, was actually totally faking a Manchester accent for the show (she actually grew up in Sussex). Still, that accent was the first time I really started to notice how different one British accent was from another, and started making connections between the sound of certain accents and the places they come from. :-)

      wow! Thank you! or just like someone from Wisconsin, (where i'm from) we don't have accents. and someone from Canada, may have a French accent.

    • @whitefantom
      @whitefantom 6 років тому +2

      Technically, everyone has an accent that's specific to whatever region they're from, but we tend to think of how language is spoken where we grew up as "default," and measure the accents of everyone else based on how similar or different it is from what's most familiar to us. I'm from Tennessee, and I can promise you people from Wisconsin most definitely have an accent. :-P (My boss's wife is from Wisconsin and he does a really funny impression of her accent, which is quite different from his own native Nashvillian accent :-P ).

      Adria. There are over 30 different accents in England - plus other accents in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. I think there are about 10 accents in the US.
      Jennifer is right - everyone - EVERYONE - has an accent.

    Kinder Eggs were banned because children might swallow the toys inside the chocolate. They are here now because Kinder makes a version in which the toys are now separate from the chocolate.

    The UK has exercised prior restraint on the press, telling them in advance that they could not print something. Also, the UK has laws prohibiting speech deemed hate speech. Neither of these would be possible in the US because of the 1st Amendment.

    Technically the war should have finished on 10th November but because of what was written (I can't quite remember by whom) the war wasn't allowed to finish until the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month... Also, Kinder Eggs are still illegal. I was speaking to my American friend about it
