Congratulations Hilary on finishing ur 50 miler run....!! Quite inspiring when u talked abt a time, when ur mind is screaming at you but you continue and discover the magic sauce 😀... Recently I was DNF in a 100 K race and taking inspiration from this to overcome that hurdle and find my magic sauce. Thank you!!
i have to say i got very touched and emotional watching this, i saw the joy and and the lightness of love going thru the hills and shining with the sun... thanks for the moments and hope to get back on the trails soon myself thinking of you !
That makes me so happy to hear -- thank you for those kind words!! Honestly, my biggest goal with starting this channel is just to share a bit of the joy that we all experience on the trails...and sometimes we need the reminder too. I hope some happy trails are in your future 🤩
This was so great! thank you especially for sharing your mindset, reframing, goal setting throughout the race. i've shared with a lot of my running buddies!
Amazing video, thank you so much for putting yourself out there. I learned a ton from watching your video, so can't speak for others, but you really helped one ultra-runner :)
What a great journey! You handled the hamstring issue like a real pro. Love your attitude and spirit. David is a jewel for a crew captain - so knowledgeable, organized and calm. Thanks for this video. Looking forward to many more.
Thank you Dennis!! I was SO lucky to have David crewing for me. He's a full time running coach and an absolute wealth of knowledge, so I hope I was able to help share some of that!
How surprised I was seeing Billy Yang in the car :) now on to the rest of the video. Like the positivity you go with. Really liked the "run with heart"!
This was awesome! Such a good inside look into a 50 miler and your mindset along the way. I can’t believe you had the energy to vlog and run for 10 hours lol
Well I had to cut out a lot of my heavy breathing, some of the clips sounded like I was actually dying 😂. Thx tho dude! Next up, we’ll get you out there too 😆
Your video has been added to one of my most favorites for inspiration and motivation. You both are a great team and I have a new subscription. Thank you both
This is such an amazing piece! So relatable, lots of usable advice, and trail scenery eye candy to top it all off! Congrats on crushing the race despite the challenges!!
This looks like a really great race. Love the production quality. Subbing! I just signed up 4 my 1st 50K ! I am so excited. Giving you a sub. Amazing work. My mom passed rom brain cancer this year, she was paralyzed during the 1.5 years she was enduring it. It always reminds me that we GET to run, we GET to push ourselves. It is a privilege
Thank you!! 🥹 there’s something so amazing about coming out of the trails where you’ve been alone for so long, and hearing all these people cheering you in. Gets me every time too.
Great story. But this is also an incredibly well done video. Wow. I’ve been trying to up my edit game and this is just awesome. Love it. Thanks for sharing.
Congratulations!! I absolutely loved this video, and you said several things that really clicked for me. Subscribing now to follow more of your adventures. I hope your hammie heals up well!
Thank you!! And you absolutely aren't too old for these silly distances, if you still think they are a good idea😉. Although I would say that even my 33 year old knees hated how runnable this course is... you might want to be a bit strategic about which one you choose, just so that you can do more hiking and less quad pounding. Generally speaking I much prefer courses that are more technical and therefore less runnable. Play to your strengths!
Yep! That’s what I say to myself every run and every race. I get to run! Can you tell where you got the tight shorts with the pockets you were wearing? :)
Ah I hope it goes well!! Definitely try to stay positive as much as possible, I really believe it helps. We GET to do this. :) I like to approach big scary distances with curiosity. Be curious about what you will learn out there, and you’ll have a great day. Good luck!
@@HilaryAnn thanks so much! I am incredibly excited. My training went well, I have a great crew, and am running with friends who have competed this course before. Running around Salzburg in Austria, will be glorious for sure
What a great experience and race. I particularly like David, your crew chief! He's so nice and knowledgeable. Is it compulsory in the US to have a crew at these types of races? I have never had a dedicated crew other than family and friends meeting me at various points to cheer me on. So essentially I'm used to 'crewing' myself and using aid stations on my own.
Thank you! David is the best, I got very lucky. He's a fulltime running coach, and he's like a walking encylopedia of running strategies and tools. You certainly don't have to have crew, and I rarely do as well... at most I've had my family crew me at races in the past (with mixed success haha), or a pacer for a 100 miler. But certainly if you have the chance to take advantage of someone who's super experienced, do itttt
Just a word of caution.. if the pain is irradiating down the leg, could be that your sciatic nerve is the cause.. either because of the piriformis, or a lower back disk issue.. hope is not your case though. Great video and thanks for bringing us along your journey.
Hey, I appreciate that! I've been thinking of booking in to see a physio to make sure there's nothing like that going on... I just made an appointment, thanks for the push. :)
Such a positive person 💛 how did you find the 'naked belt'? Could you fit a full flask in the belt and not feel any bouncing, was there plenty of room for bits and pieces?
I really liked the naked belt, but I did find that I preferred drinking out of my handheld as I ran (rather than taking the flask in and out of the belt all the time). Also I did get a bit of bruising post race from the bottle lid moving around against my low back a bit…but I think I could avoid that by being more aware of where that plastic lid piece sits in the belt next time. The biggest plus for using it was being able to keep my shirt loose and ventilated, and I think having a pack against my back would have felt really hot as the day went on. I’d give it a solid 9/10, and I’d definitely use it again for 50k races, and some 50 milers depending on how much gear I was trying to pack (it was perfect for what I needed to carry for this race).
Great race recap and nice job on the 50! I was out there as well and dang, that race really lives up to the Relentless tag. Hearing you say the elevation gain is comparable to rim-2-rim-2-rim just blew my mind?! What brand is the UPF long sleeve shirt that you wore? It looks awesome!
It was such sneaky elevation right?? But by the end of the race I sure felt like I’d climbed the GC 🤪. And my SPF shirt was lululemon! I’ve had a few of theirs and I’m a fan
im intrigued, what was the actual strategy for heat management? David mentioned those 3 places but what was the solution? I don't do too well when it gets too hot so this may come in very handy for my race next month.
So getting ice onto those areas with no hair on the body is key. For me, I was swapping a bandana filled with ice around my neck at every AS, and also often carrying some ice chips in my hands leaving the AS. It’s quite insane how effective that is at lowering body temps. Also wearing the loose sun shirt helped, and getting it wet a few times created a mini AC unit. Also carry pepto bismol to combat heat related nausea, as not eating will derail you faster than anything else will.
It's by Lululemon :). You have to sort of watch for them online, they always go fast. But I've gotten a few different versions of this top over the years and it's always awesome.
You crushed the race (and edit) babe. Proud of you!!! 🔥❤️
☺️🙌aw. thank you, love! Team effort.
@@HilaryAnn @Billy Yang - Amazing films! How long have you guys been together?
“I don’t have to run, I get to run.”

“I ran happy today.” I’m going to take that into my future runs. Thanks for sharing your video. Such a fun, positive and honest person.
"Pretty much everything about this race scared me, so I decided to do it" - this line got me hooked^^

Thank you so much Eddie!
Nothing new on race day is more of a 'do as I say, not as I do' type of advice 😉
Great job on the race and video!
😂
As an Australian, I really appreciated your preference of kms over miles 😅
Congrats on your race and thanks for sharing the experience!
I meeeean the rest of the world other than the US uses KM’S, right? 😆 that’s definitely how my brain works at least
Loved it!! So inspirational and such positive outlook on the whole experience and ultra community! makes me eager for my two races this summer!

15th with a hamstring injury is amazing.
Amazing job!! Could you tell me the brand of the shirt you wore during the race. It looks so light!
It's by Lululemon! Just look up their UV/SPF tops -- they tend to sell out fast tho, so I usually keep an eye out for them and get a couple at a time.
@@HilaryAnn Thanks so much. I will check it out.
