    I've done container gardens for years in the same type of buckets. I just drill holes in the bottom of the buckets. I filled the whole bucket with miracle grow potting soil. I use chicken fence wire and make a trellis around it. We cut several holes where we could stick our hand in to pick the tomatoes. But the makeshift trellis gives it something to hold the plant up. I catch rain water in a bucket and use that to water the plants.

      I really have had the most enjoyment out of the planters. I go look at them everyday and watch their progress. I plan on expanding on the tomato cage as soon as my tomatoes out grow it. Hopefuly next year I will have a bigger garden to play in.

    I think "I'm about to monkey" has something to do with being very hot. Right? 😂 You did a fabulous job on the garden Becky! I know how much hard work goes into making a new garden, I have made several. It looks so beautiful, and you repurposed several items too, that is always nice when you can do that. I love the trellis, it turned out so wonderful and looks really awesome! You are very talented! The veggies look like they will do good too and I love the plant in the boot, it's really cool, the plant looks kind of like a spider plant, not sure though. I was thinking, it would be fun if you could try growing some sunflowers sometime. What a great video, thank you! 🌻🦉❤🦉🌻

      Yes that’s what it means, and that you are just before falling out. They use that term in the fields when it’s so hot and you just can’t go any further.

    TFS. You did great. Gardening is like any other skill you will learn what works and what does not work for your lifestyle, your home, location and budget. I will tell you start Marigolds and sunflowers from seed. I just use very good organic soil, grow lamp and solo cups. You will be even more amazed at how much your gardening budget will stretch. Also if you can protect that wood. What a neat piece of history to have in your family possibly for many generations to come. You made a wonderful trellis. I will tell you I am no professional but love to garden so taught myself. I made a lot of mistakes. I try to share what I have learnt it might help others. I did not have a tiller. I always did hand till every piece of my yard by hand and worked in my own hand made compost and good soil. I only did a small area each year because of having to do it by hand. You did great. Just keep your beds well weeded and fed and properly watered. It will all be great.

    When that urge to homestead and get your fingers in the soil strikes, it's best to just give in to it! 😄 I think, through a lot of hard work and sweat, you have achieved what you set out to do. It already looks good and as time passes the rewards will just get better. It does look like the soil there is hard and compacted which doesn't lend itself to easy gardening. But you persevered. Great job!

    I started with herbs and tomatoes. Both did really well last year. We did it again this year and have added quite a few things. Last year, all the herbs, tomatoes and even the cucumbers were beautiful and came out great! You could always try like parsley, cilantro, basil, whatever you cook with would be my suggestion. 😊

    I have learned after many years,plants and $$$ what NOT to waste my time and money on. I have rocks with clay holding the rocks together and a very natural landscape-called doing nothing. So I build raised beds with the rocks bring in soil and plant deer resistant drought tolerant - the more invasive the better- to give some color and texture around the house. 30 years of learning and I still have trouble getting a garden to survive, between my black thumb, the deer and the ever loving ground squirrels, I try about every other year.😅this is not that year. I will try to get more structure in place. You did a real nice job!

    • @MyLittleVintageHome
      @MyLittleVintageHome  4 місяці тому +1

      You sound like me with those "ever loving squirrels" LOL. I think that is all such good advice. I truly don't know the in's and out's of what kind of yard I have just yet. I never did anything because I felt like it was so much work to get the grass up. Now that I have my tiller I know i can do pretty much anything. I am also learning about compost and adding nutrients to my existing soil. Maybe in a few years I will have the yard of my dreams.

    Sorry to rattle on again -- but about 10 yrs ago i had a family member pick me up a garden tiller. But it was just too big etc for me for when i used it, it would make my hands go numb. Then we got a smaller one & another family member accidentally messed it up lol. Then i went & got myself a small electric one --- it is more my size and i can use it without help. :)

  • @melroseoriginals

    It looks great! I think that plant in the boot is a variegated lily turf and you could take it out of the boot and divide it in 2 even though it is kind of small, put it in the ground in your flower bed and it will get much bigger. You can divide it every few years even and have more for around your landscape for free. Just time and patience!

    • @MyLittleVintageHome
      @MyLittleVintageHome  4 місяці тому +1

      Now that you mention it I do think I remember it being a yellow Lily. I have had it so many years I had forgotten all about it.

      @@MyLittleVintageHome lily turf is an ornamental grass that puts out these pretty little purple flowers in the summer. It's not like a daylily type plant, but they are easy to grow and fill in spaces with nice texture.❤

    I have never planted tomato plants in bucket BUT i have a friend & her hubby do & they always look & do great. My veg. garden is always in the ground. Though this yr i purchased on line 2 metal type raised beds to try it (will see how that turns out but most veggies put in the ground. As for flowers (annuals & perinials) i tend to go overboard ha ha. Wanted to tell you that merigolds are so hearty & tho they are annuals, they do volunteer (even here in nebraska). And there are several kinds of merigolds -- my opinion you can never go wrong w/merigolds. Merigolds do great even when just plant from seeds too.

      I know and maybe next year when my husband is able to build me some raised beds I will definitely do that but my bucket that I put together with the milk jugs was way too tight. Becky, it looks so good! Even though you claim to not be a gardener or a carpenter, or "know nuthin' about nuthin'" (😂😂), you have inspired me! I cannot keep plants alive, but every year, I try to plant more and more. And I am getting better at it. So this year, I was thinking about adding on to our landscaping on a new area of the house, but I was in fear, mainly because of my lack of knowledge. Watching you be so fearless has definitely inspired me to just go for it! What you have accomplished in your yard looks amazing and is proof that anyone can do anything if they put their mind to it! Hi Becky, love how enterprising you are in this video 😂. Your daughter’s pop bottle would have made a good water reservoir.
    I grow tomatoes every year and usually from 2 Romas I get enough tomatoes to make all of our salsa, pasta sauce, pizza sauce and tomato sauce to do us all winter as well as fresh tomatoes in the summer.
    Don’t forget to pick out the suckers which grow in the apex of each branch (promotes better growth). Also, if you ask for indeterminate type tomatoes, they produce fruit longer than determinate types.
    I have run a tiller many times and it’s not easy, so kudos to you!
    You will love the jasmine because they smell wonderful. I wish I could grow one in my zone, but, alas 😢
    I wouldn’t worry too much about your sedum, just don’t water it very often (they like drier soil). It does make great ground cover. There are many types of sedum, if you check at your garden Center, they will have more and it should be inexpensive.
    Your other bushes look like false spirea (Sorbaria).
    Great job, Becky, I felt for you when you looked so hot! 🥵. A shower must have felt awesome!🚿

    I'm pretty sure the 3 bushes you planted with the white conical flowers are ornamental bamboo. I had one in a zone 9 yard. It only got morning sun but did very well. My husband got into a pruning mood one day and took the plant down to about 6 inches. I was sure he had killed it, but, that thing grew back even better than before! Oh, the white flowers turn into beautiful red berries in the winter.

      You are the second person to tell me that it is a form of bamboo. I had no idea when I picked them out. I hope they stay contained to my flower beds otherwise I may have to replant them. We are usually pretty good at keeping up with trimming the shrubs around here. (David is) Hopefully it will look ok.

      @@MyLittleVintageHome This type of bamboo isn't invasive. I think you'll be very happy with them. 🙂

    Hi Becky, it was so nice to see you and Summer laughing...so joyful...
    Jasmine grows like crazy here in my gardening zone 9...I have to regularly prune it. It will grow up on anything that is not moving: fences, trees, even a shovel or tool leaning on the fence...lol...
    I hope yours does as well.
    Wishing you a glorious garden!!
