So if y'all have any car camping car hacks, feel free to share as I'm just about to hit the highway! My car camping setup: ua-cam.com/video/YFrQrjNHWKo/v-deo.html
I'm a trucker..I love watching videos like yours..i truly pray your life is safe, fun, and satisfying..I love traveling in my truck and do it alone very successfully...you've got this!!!!
New subscriber recommended by Caravan Carolyn who I have been following for years. I have a little tow trailer but with gas as high as it is, I think I could do SUV camping. I have a 3 row SUV which is old but reliable. My 2nd row are captain’s chairs and fold down like yours, not flat. However, my third row is a bench that goes ALL the way flat and I am short enough to stretch out full length. I’d love to try this! I already have a Jackery 1000, solar panels, and an extra 12 v plug in the back so I can recharge the Jackery while I drive. Just need a mattress, your shelf idea, make my window covers. I sleep hot so I think I need those screen sleeves for some of my windows and I will buy those dark tinted rain guards so I can just barely crack my windows at night to reduce condensation and catch a breeze with my usb fan.
You're an inspiration and such a cutie. I'm 54 and ready to embark on the same kind of journey in my Jeep renegade. I don't have many obligations and I can now live how I want.
Your face says it all. Your face in the beginning of the video is "city" face. Your face at the end of the video is full of life, eyes are sparkly, and you seem at peace and happy. Could be your letting go project, not sure but you look radiant at the end of the video. Likecso many male and female Rvers, car campers, ect say, "They became more fit and happy on the road, felt younger and were filled with hope. Good luck to you.
Interesting observation, I never noticed that. Road trips are freeing for me, that's for sure. I can go where I want when I want, explore any side road, make any stop... It's invigorating! Thank you for your lovely comment. 😊
Lol I’m about to turn 57 and bought a Buick Encore. Large enough to put a mini mattress in the back. Rain guards on the windows is a life saver in the rain. I am driving from Colorado to Banff Canada. I am camping, glamping, airbnbs and hotels. Screens for windows are great. Battery power is nice. It was a lot of trial and error. Staying organize is huge. I like to make a plan but this is the first time I’m making plans days at a time. Still on the road in Jasper Alberta and it’s been a trip of a life time. So worth it.
Rain guards would be awesome, they're definitely on the list. Your itinerary sounds amazing, and I'll bet that Encore is super roomy. Have fun out there!
Hi Diane love that you are getting out there and trying no matter what age you are. I’m around your age and I’m a solo RV”er I have started outfitting my Jeep to do Jeep camping but it’s still a struggle for me trying to figure it out. I enjoyed your video nice to have someone to identify with that is not young enough to be a child of mine lol!
Lisa, that's so cool! You can go so many great places with a Jeep. This all takes time, just take those baby steps, learn and keep moving forward... :)
Cross breeze at night is important, grab some of those sock window nets that cover the window frame to keep bugs out. Even if you only crack both rear windows a couple inches it'll help big time. Butane stove mandatory, good hunting knife, water filtration / life straw, rope or twine, 10X12 tarp can be used as an awning at a boondocking spot, tied off roof racks over to a tree, good camping chair, small folding table, mosquito coils/thermacell, paper plates, charcoal lighting fluid (can be used to easily start a fire), gorilla tape, baby wipes. I have all that and then some in a tupperware bin and its all I need to go camping in my SUV. Have fun!
Congratulations on embarking on your new adventure! Good to have a trial run first. I'm also 50 something and plan on hitting the road in a year and a half. There is so much to see and do out there! I'm in the Pacific Northwest and nature abounds around here. Safe and happy travels. Look forward to seeing more of your videos.
Sorry that your truck stop experience wasn't good. I had good experience with two different truck stops in February in TN and IL. A very nice person at the first one wrote down a description of my vehicle and said she'd share it with the next shift. She told me where to park (not with the semis) and that I'd be fine. It worked out well. The second one also worked out well too. I found truck stops to be a good alternative to Walmarts. I stayed at those by myself and didn't like that the store closes from 11 pm to 6 am. In contrast, the truck stops were open 24 hours/day.
I can relate to the feeling of wondering what you are doing. My husband and I are in our mid forties and we recently slept in out Subaru Outback for 10 days for our trip to Utah. We loved it!! Since then I have been researching way to improve upon the experience.
I just found you and I love this! I am starting my car camping adventure. Need to get away somewhere warm this winter. I live in Ohio so will have to travel far. I will try testing it local first! thanks.
Ok, I was completely enthralled by this! I know its easy to hear this from me because I know you, and am invested in your travels, but, I could have said I was bored by it 😆I found myself pausing the videos for landmarks lol! Kennsington Drive, and Sunrise, right here in Roseville! It also looks like you took the backroads to the thriving metropolis that is, Galt! I thought you did a fantastic job showing how it is to sleep in your car. Simple details that will be helpful for anyone who chooses to do this. Cheers! 🥤
Hey thanks, Darin! And yes, I love me some backroads, LOL. Galt was cuter than I expected it to be. Last time I was there, it was kind of desolate. But now it seems a little more well-to-do. Wish I could say the same about Stockton... 😵💫
I'm only on the 2nd vid but for the front driver seat push it all the way forward and then put the seat back down as far as it will go. That may help lower the head some. You may also want to try passenger side set up to see how the bed fits on that side. Do the same thing with the passenger seat that you did with the driver. Of course, you may have already tied this in an upcoming vid that I have not seen yet.
Thanks, I finally remembered to do that after a couple of uncomfortable nights. The backseat that folds down on the passenger side in my car is too narrow for me to comfortably toss and turn, but thanks for the suggestion!
Greetings from the Uk Diane! Awesome to see other women out there doing the car camper thing. Did my first trial of mine in a Motorway services and it worked so well. Few tweaks to do but I will be doing it again soon! Just need some days off work to sort it out before the next adventure. In my smaller old car..... the bit of the back seat you sit on flipped forward in to the foot well had to push on the middle and pull from the back to release them (Push the front seats forward more.) and then the back dropped in much flatter. Yours may do the same. My new one the seats come out all together which makes it so much easier. Have fun out there and keep posting!
Kimberly, so nice to meet a fellow adventurer, thanks for saying hello. I've tried everything with those back seats but unfortunately they were not designed to go flat. But the platform is working okay, and it gives me a little storage underneath, which is super useful. Heading out tomorrow, so excited! Thanks for saying hello... :)
I was very close to my father who passed away in 2019. I was working then and had to take off 3 months to grieve. I later decided to retire in 2020 but I’m still trying to figure out my next steps. Car camping was something I thought about doing and have the entire thing set up and ready to go. I’m nervous though. And I still miss my dad so much.
Tanya, I'm so sorry about your dad. If you're nervous about getting started, just do a 1-night test run someplace close to home so that you can bail if it all goes wrong. Your probs would have been proud of you for taking the chance to live your best life (just a guess... :)
I have several usb fans, they make a HUGE difference. crappy trucks? thats a bit judgmental considering.. its not the vehicle its the journey, the adventure can be as interesting or more in an older paid off vehicle than a new one
Yes, the fans are great. And as a suburban solo female newbie, the trucks were scary because I'm not used to sleeping between vehicles like that. But, now I'm finding that some of the nicest people on the planet drive beat up old trucks, and boy, do they have stories to tell... :)
I LOVED this!! I just traveled from Oregon to Missouri to Kentucky and back to Oregon in my car. I tried the truck stops but I just couldn't. I loved the showers there though!! I really really enjoyed the rest areas! They were awesome. I am going to travel around my state and sleep in rest areas and hopefully some wild camping spots (free). I am also in my 50s and want to see some things before its to late. :)
@@christinefury1040 Sure, truck stops are places like loves , flying J, and pilots. Those are usually a convenient store with laundry mat bathrooms and showers and usually a fast food place like subway inside. Its also a gas station with lots of parking for over the road truckers and travelers to rest. Lots of people in and out of there. Rest areas usually have areas with picnic tables, play area's for your pets to play and stretch. There are bathrooms and usually information about the state or area you are in. Like a mini state park you can sleep in your car at. Usually very pretty and a little bit quieter. Also they are usually just outside of a town. Did that help?
@@newlyawakepatriot5446 Yes! Very much so! I’ve never heard of those commercial names I will definitely try to Google where they are ! Thank you so much! I never thought of sleeping in my car at the rest stops.
Hi Diane, I found your channel yesterday and am watching from the beginning now, what fun! I have also been watching a bunch of UA-camrs and learning about vanlife, for a couple of years, and considering this lifestyle. I am also 50-something. I love your channel, my favorite so far. I am looking forward to following your adventures. I have several items from your links in my Amazon cart! Great job on the videos, I think you're a pro! Mary from FL 😅❤😊
about to do the journey......like you before I get too old.....going to sleep in my Toyota FJ Cruiser and head to Moab from Atlanta.......collecting the stuff that I think that I will need.....here we go!....driveway sleep test this week..
Oh my gosh was that a Dewey Decimal System drawer?!? Like that scenery in Nor-Cal, my previous home and lost someone special from there too. Thanks for the trek!
New subscriber here... love ur videos so far!!! I'm 9 months out from fulltime RVing.. empty nested Mom... 3 adult kids in 3 different states across the country.. so I'm gonna be a mobile grandma lol once I'm on the road I'll be turning 50... so big big year!!! So nice to find you.. safe travels to u, my new utube friend -Kimmi Mac XOXO
Yeah, I'd love to do it in a campervan or truck camper or cute little trailer someday too. But, this is all I've got and don't want to wait. I'll try to take wider angle shots to make it look less bad, haha! 😜
Hi Diane, I watch Caravan Carolyn videos and she said to check you out. She is right, you have Awesome videos. I subscribed and I can’t wait to watch your adventure. Thank you for sharing. 👍👍👍👍
Good luck to you. I got to your video from Caravan Carolyn. I admire your courage. I was going to do this but I’m 72 and my health is not great right now.
I too have an rdx and have car camped in it. I choose not to have a sleeping platform though. Use the passenger side so I can push forward the front seat as much as possible to give myself more leg roo. But otherwise my set up is quite similar same windows treatments. Lol
How funny! I did end up switching to the passenger side and taking the sleeping platform out on the next trip, which I think worked out better. Great minds think alike? 😂
Hi Diane I am a new subscriber; I checked you out from Caravan Carolyn recommending you. I am really enjoying your videos ~ the one thing I had been concerned about was how stuffy it would be sleeping in your car with the windows closed. Glad to hear you have a fan! BTW your videography is awesome 👏
Janice, thank you! I always sleep with something open for fresh air-the sunroof for sure unless it's going to rain and/or the side windows if I feel safe, always with screens. And yes, the fan is a lifesaver that makes it all possible, even in warm weather. Not sure I could do this in a humid environment, though.
You have a cracked windshield in the area that impairs your vision, that's illegal and a shredded windshield wiper that's very unsafe. I'm not bagging you but you should fix those. btw you can't sell the car with a cracked windshield, so you have to get it replaced anyway. Next time you do window coverings press the edges with aluminum foil. If the window exceeds the size of the foil tape 2 or 3 pieces together. Overlander Tip: Back in to unfamiliar places so if you have bolt due to 2 legged, 4 legged or weather issues you drive straight out. I had a girlfriend in Stockton, didn't end well, LoL.
Illegal, really? Interesting, I didn't know. I did get that wiper blade fixed, but the last time I replaced my windshield due to a crack, it cracked again four weeks later. So, $300 out of pocket for almost nothing. But yes, I'll get it fixed. Thanks for the tips!
I was really enjoying your content and personal experiences until the comment about the “crappy” trucks. I am hoping this was a nervous slip because I know it can be very unnerving parking in a strange place in close proximity to other vehicles and we do need to aware of our surroundings. You have great ideas and keep it real, and you are putting it out there…thank you. Safe travels.
@@justwannasay5454 agree, this is getting quite out of hand. "Crappy trucks" owners often drive them so they do not have to worry about cosmetic damages. Some owners drive them out of necessity. Someone who is concerned about damage doesn't want dinged by anyone who may not be concerned about damage. And I am the owner of a "crappy truck" for the same reasons: necessity, and not wanting to invest in a ride that will likely be damaged by other vehicles/flying rocks/nature. They all get you from point A to B.
I am also 50 something newly retired single female. I am too lazy to make video documentaries when I go on the road. But I don’t have to because your channel and monologue is a perfect representative :).
ok its the end of june 23 - I thought I'd start from the beginning and like all the videos cause I think Diane's channel should go gooo gooooo. Anyway hadn't watched for a while but it looks like I started watching and subscribing about 9 months ago. so my challenge is to sit in my comfy lounge chair drink my wine and watch all the videos I haven't watched and like (im subscribed) not sharing (don't harass my family and friends) but I will like and if I have no comment its a thumbs up. Now I know when I started watching last year I may have watched some vids and commented so hopefully not too many to go. Get into it people. My Journey: I discovered this channel when I was at a pub in Brisbane. It became my ritual to have a pint of New. (if you are from NSW Australia you know what this means) yes I have had all those small batch brewery beers in Sydney - please don't come for me cause I like a commercial beer off tap. Toohey's New don't bloat bitches it's in their filtration.Anyhow, I am a Sydney born, bred, raised etc. In 2022 I left my partner that wasn't very nice to me. My sisters were in Queensland (one in Brisbane and one in Gold Coast) so I mainly stayed in Brisbane with my sister there in the city and would do many river walks. At this time I was able to do a remote role and several times during the week I would go off walking and stop by the pub and have a pint while watching Diane Schmiane - It brought joy. It brought gratitude - I remember watching a video missing Sydney - finishing my beer and walking out of the pub to walk the Brisbane foreshores. Feeling really lucky to have the opportunity to walk around Brisbane river walks with the views. So Dianeschmiane Im gonna watch em all like comment with a thumbs up if I have nothing to say - Share - well I don't force my shit on no one. But I wish you You Tube Content Creator Success
Awwww, Helen, thank you so much for the support, and thanks for sharing your journey of how you found the channel and the way you choose to view the content. That's valuable data that we creators don't often get but always wonder about. I'm so glad you enjoy these, I have a lot of fun making them. There's another Aussie in the crew who comments frequently, Jack Walsh, so if you see him in the comments, say hello! Someday I'll have to get down there and try some New! 🍺🍺🍺
OMG! I live in Sacramento. I almost SNAPPED by neck when I heard Sunrise. I ‘m 53 years old female trying to learn how to drive a car for the 1st time so I can join road trip nomad life. This has been 23 years dream but I gave up because my driving phobia but NOW 2024, I am going for my dream. I can afford to buy a used Class A or C. I just need to learn how to drive.
Friendly tip incase you don't...always use flip flops when using public showers or even hotel showers ...you run a risk of getting a nasty case of athletes foot lol
I think camping or living in your vehicle in the city can be alot more challenging because of places you have to find to sleep and possibly sketchy people. People who can go to BLM or Forest land is alot more scenic, more privacy but may not have cell or wifi signal depending on location and your set up. I'm retired and have considered doing this so I can see the NW states like Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Utah. I live in Montana and so much beauty to see here and explore but I would like to see other places to. Renting a motel or Airbnb every night is not in my budget so car camping with what I have would be the only way. I know lots do this but it's scary for solo female. Guess like anything you have to be prepared, choose wisely, and let go of fear 😨 or you will not ever do it. Congratulations for doing this!
Yep, you’ve gotta start somewhere. Try some local trips not too far from home and bring a Spot GPS device is there’s no cell so that you can still stay in touch with someone willing to help if there’s trouble!
I am starting to sell everything that I have right now and eventually selling my house and I want to start doing this so badly. I do want to ask you though, What made you have the mindset to want to start doing this in the 1st place? I will be micro car camping with a Nissan sentra lol. I am going to start out camping locally just to see if I can actually do it
You might want to hold onto that house and rent it out as a cash-producing asset that might help fund future travels. I've always had the urge to travel and see places, and my dad dying really pulled into focus that life is short so we should live in the now. For me that meant traveling even though I don't have the funds for a nice RV. Getting out on the weekends is a great way to test it out. I had a Nissan Sentra back in the day. You can do it!
Very cool, but you may want to consider renting out the house as it can be a great source of ongoing income, and you can hire a property manager to take care of all the day-to-day issues so that you can focus on travel and adventure. Just a thought... :)
Hi Diane...Been enjoying joining you on your travels. I watch Creative RV..with Robyn..who is wonderful with helping others with camping etc. She suggests: Harvest House for finding places to camp. Please check it out and Creative RV youtuber.
@@justwannasay5454 The person asking was probably confused because the video they saw prior showed her with short hair and not in this one. They must be out of order! I get that way too. Sometimes youtubers don't publish videos in the correct order and some of us who are very detailed oriented notice these things!
Yep, it's sketchy. It ain't a Disney theme park. Truck stops are a place to do what you need to do, close your eyes for a short power nap and then hit the super slab again. Then again, you can look for a very desolate piece of BLM dirt to overnight on where you are totally vulnerable. Your choice.
@diane the RV is comfy when your parked and settled but it’s a beast driving through towns, the setup and takedown. I can’t go everywhere nor can I park everywhere. I want to finish out my Jeep so I have more freedom to travel and spend less gas on a RV. I love the fact that I can whip my Jeep in and out if places.

That's so cool, hope to see you out there one day. I'm loving this so far!
When you say “rest areas,” do you mean they are separate from the truck stops? Can you elaborate please! Thanks for your comment/post.
So many stealth parking opportunities just in residential areas without having to put up with carparks etc.
I haven't gone there yet, but it's definitely on the list of things to try... :)
Love your idea for the fitted window coverings!
Hi Diane,
I found your channel yesterday and am watching from the beginning now, what fun!
Mary from FL
😅❤😊
Mary, yay, thank you so much, and welcome to the party!

Awesome, sounds like a great trip in a great vehicle. Good luck with that driveway test!
Oh my gosh was that a Dewey Decimal System drawer?!? Like that scenery in Nor-Cal, my previous home and lost someone special from there too. Thanks for the trek!
Thanks for coming along, and where did you see the Dewey drawer?
New subscriber here... love ur videos so far!!! I'm 9 months out from fulltime RVing.. empty nested Mom... 3 adult kids in 3 different states across the country.. so I'm gonna be a mobile grandma lol once I'm on the road I'll be turning 50... so big big year!!! So nice to find you.. safe travels to u, my new utube friend -Kimmi Mac XOXO
That’s so exciting that you can go full time like that, I’ll have to check out your channel when I get back!
Love your videos and want to do this someday... but in a campervan! I get a little claustrophobic when I see you settling down for the eve! 😟
Awesome, thanks, Maria!
Understand the journey for closure...been trying for 3 years to get on mine 😭
Just keep going toward that goal, baby steps, every day, and you'll get there... ❤️
Good luck to you. I got to your video from Caravan Carolyn. I admire your courage. I was going to do this but I’m 72 and my health is not great right now.
Nancy, thanks, and I hope your health improves. If it does, maybe you can try a small trip nearby, just to try it out... :)
I am just so excited with future other beautiful places that you're going to show us. I just sub and I will be rooting on you. Have a safe journey. 🚗🚗
Maria, thanks for coming along!
At 11:46. _"Oh my! You look beautiful today!"_ 🌸
Visitor center, Cracker Barrel, Cabelas bml land. FreeRoam and harvest host. So many places outside the box. Love and Light always Karen 😇 and Miles 🐕
Harvest Host requires a full bathroom, but thanks for the other suggestions, especially FreeRoam, I'll check that out!
I did not know that about Harvest host. Thank you for the update. 😊
For a suburban newbie like myself, yes, it was scary sleeping in a situation like that.
Why does it have to be a nervous slip? WTH. She can say what she wants.
LOL, thanks Jen, that's a big compliment!
Enjoyed watching what does it feel like passing peoples homes who are living a conventional life ?
They look like nice places to live, but I enjoy traveling… 😊
That's a weird question. 😬
ok its the end of june 23 - I thought I'd start from the beginning and like all the videos cause I think Diane's channel should go gooo gooooo.
Grandest trifold mattress
I love my trifold!
It's so funny because I live in Roseville( Sacramento area) and my sis lives in Stockton.
Oh boy, then you really know... :)
Local libraries usually have great FREE internet.
Yes, I did discover that a little later in the trip... :)
if you want to try removing your front seat you could make a flat bed there
Yeah, but I sometimes have passengers to, so can't really go there... :)
That's fantastic, just keep practicing and you'll get there. The more you drive the easier it gets... :)
I’m a new subscriber recommended by Caravan Carolyn.👍
Frankie, thank you so much!
Caravan Carolyn sent me here!🥰🥰
Yay, thanks for joining!
Life is a adventure
Friendly tip incase you don't...always use flip flops when using public showers or even hotel showers ...you run a risk of getting a nasty case of athletes foot lol
Thanks, yes. I always bring shower shoes. Merry Christmas... :)
A really good idea is ear plugs and I have a eye mask!
Awesome!!!👠🚌👠
What model is your suv?
It's a 2012 Acura RDX AWD.
🫶🫶🫶 loved the vidz 🖖
Change your wiper blades. (:
I bought new blades on that trip and changed them when I got back because, yeah, they were bad!
😂😂😂 @ “Jesus Christ” at the fuel prices.
😊😬😜
New Sub and plan on doing something similar as soon as i can get rid of lifetime of accumulation and sell house.
Very cool, but you may want to consider renting out the house as it can be a great source of ongoing income, and you can hire a property manager to take care of all the day-to-day issues so that you can focus on travel and adventure. Just a thought... :)
Omg i dated Danny from Porfies restaurant and Prestgio jewelry in Stockton
😱
Hi Diane...Been enjoying joining you on your travels. I watch Creative RV..with Robyn..who is wonderful with helping others with camping etc. She suggests: Harvest House for finding places to camp. Please check it out and Creative RV youtuber.
She's cool, I like her channel. Unfortunately you can't do Harvest Host unless you have a fully contained bathroom. So, maybe when I upgrade.... :)
Diane, im confused 😕 i thought cut your hair when you started
If you watch the videos in chronological order, the haircut makes sense... :)
What does hair have to do with anything? 🤭
@@justwannasay5454 The person asking was probably confused because the video they saw prior showed her with short hair and not in this one. They must be out of order! I get that way too. Sometimes youtubers don't publish videos in the correct order and some of us who are very detailed oriented notice these things!
❤️❤️❤️
Put black in your windows not silver to be discreet
Totally agree, did that with black flannel to better blend in... :)
Wow, the comment about the crappy trucks...I bet that crappy truck owner would be the first one to lend you a hand, if you needed it.
That's probably true.
Agreed, there are certainly tradeoffs either way!
Sorry but you don't grow wine, you grow grapes 🍇. What you do with them is a nother matter.🤔
So technical.
Your French accent is gloriously cheesy....
I am a work camper living in a concerted bus. 🚐. I am new at traveling but I just love it 😀 love the musi🎶🎵🎼
Karen, very cool! Just trying to keep it lively... :)
Hi Karen. What type of work are you doing? I've wondered about doing work camping if I ever get on the rode.
Congratulations, I'm 55 and I am about to do the same thing and if I really love it then I will buy an RV. 🤎
An RV would be a lot more comfortable, that’s for sure.
Check out( story chasing ) she has a group of campus g hints .be safe .ur having fun and I enjoy watching hing your videos
Thanks, I haven't seen her in a while, so I'll check back in... :)
