  • G'day, guys! In today's video, I do an unboxing of some grafting stock cacti including a bunch of Pereskiopsis cuttings and some Trichocereus hybrids. I also got my hands on some young Astrophytum asterias 'Super Kabuto' seedlings, which I'll attempt to graft in the future.
    Connect with me on Instagram - / petevsplant
    Check out my eBay store - www.ebay.com.au/usr/petevsplants
    I also recap my recent experience selling & buying plants on eBay, how to pollinate cacti, as well as purchasing and setting up an outdoor greenhouse for my cacti and succulents (Agave and Euphorbia for the win!).

Just loves those weird little potatoes and would love to have one for decades and for it to live on for decades after I’m gone ☺️ I’m growing a blue cactus (don’t ask me the full name), dioscorea elephantipes and Huernia Zebrina from seed. I checked on them yesterday and literally hit a high note when I saw that the Huernia seeds have already germinated and grown into 5 cm tall little babies 👏

    Thanks for sharing the stuff on selling propagations. I've been thinking about the logistics of setting up some kind of small propagation shop, so it's nice to hear from someone with more experience. Also, on the English grammar note, I've noticed some people saying "more X" when "Xer" exists, but I feel like it's a significant minority. Same with using the continuous for those verbs. I don't hear it a lot, but I do sometimes. I think that it's likely that we're experiencing a shift in the language as it evolves, like the mixing of "lie" and "lay" that's going on (in the US, at least). Fun fact: I don't think it's an across-the-board rule, but most adjectives that we add "-er" to are Germanic in origin, and those that need "more" typically come from Latin (or Romance) origin.

    • @petevsplants7516
      @petevsplants7516  Рік тому

      No worries, mate! And yeah, it's interesting. I studied evolution at uni and it seems a lot like gene frequencies in populations and how they can fluctuate up and down until they become fixed in all individuals or extinct. Seems like it's a similar thing in languages with words, phrases, accent, grammar, etc. For some reason, certain things catch on whilst others drop out of usage and the language slowly changes.

    14:30 I love your observations about the words people use.
    is there a rule for when to use the suffix -er or the qualifier more? Like, you don’t say gooder.
    my theory is people don’t want to sound like an idiot by adding an -er when they shouldn’t so they just use the word “more” to be safe. 🤷

    • @petevsplants7516
      @petevsplants7516  Рік тому +1

      I don't know the specifics, but really grammar in any language is pretty arbitrary and there are very few languages with rules that don't get broken because ultimately it's what people decide sounds good and communicates the meaning well. I always hear people using adjectives instead of adverbs for example - I'll do it quick (instead of 'quickly'). But once it becomes common enough it's no longer a 'mistake' and the adverb version would just become 'quick' too lol.
      One rule with -er is I think that any word ending in the sound 'ee' like -y (funny) is turned into -ier.

    I just bought my first ever cactus this past weekend. I got a🌵 Stenocereus Pruinosus - Gray Ghost Organ Pipe Cactus 🌵 I saw it at Walmart of all places. It was so beautiful I had to take it home. I have loads of succulents but never purchased a cactus. How do I know when to water it????

    • @petevsplants7516
      @petevsplants7516  Рік тому +1

      Oh man, goddamn! That's a beautiful one. Just added it to the wishlist haha
      From what I've learnt, the best thing is to do wayyyyyyy less frequently than you think it needs. Cacti won't die from underwatering, but overwatering will kill them fast from rot. Some cacti get squishy when they're thirsty, they can also change colour. You also want to avoid watering them when they're dormant and not growing (usually end of autumn and winter). Just make sure they're in a well draining mix and water them every 7-10 days if it's warm weather and they're actively growing (usually you can tell this by the new spines coming out at the top, which will be lighter in colour or the skin will be paler there). Another way is to make sure the soil is BONE BONE dry and wait a week after that. They're like little batteries when it comes to water storage, so they can handle not having access to water for weeks and months, even years sometimes.

      Lol. Yeah... It's funny, though, as the deeper you go into linguistics the more you realise how diverse grammar is across different dialects of English (or any language) and that it's totally arbitrary when it comes down to it. Nothing's really 'right' or 'wrong', it's just about communication and whether or not that's effective.
