How to Remove a GM GLOVEBOX LOCK

  • Is the glovebox lock on your General Motors car or truck acting up?
If your car has a glove box lock (as found on most mid-70s through late-80s GM vehicles), it probably needs-at minimum-a good cleaning.
Maybe the lockring is loose and the mechanism is now rattling and you want to tighten it.
Or you just need to install a new one.
Whatever the reason, in this video I show you in detail the steps necessary to properly remove the lock tumbler without breaking any small parts.
You will need a very small flathead screwdriver to press the tumbler pins. Alternatively, a paper clip, straightened so you can push the pins, will also work.
And you will also need a hex wrench large enough to fit the inside of the lockring or, as I explain and show in the video, a pair of short needle nose pliers will get the job done.
General Motors used the same glovebox lock for vehicles of the 1970s throughout the 1980, maybe even the early 90s. These included passenger cars by Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Cadillac.
In addition to passenger cars, the same locks were used in Chevy and GMC vans and pickup trucks, including Suburban, C-10, Silverado, Blazer, and Jimmy, among other models.
I hope you find the video helpful.
    Thank you for watching! 🙂👍🏻

The first pin is the only one that you have to push in with a pick or screwdriver. The next four are tumblers that are pushed in by the key. Hold the latch closed to take the spring tension off the lock cylinder. Push the first pin in and pull the knob out until the cylinder stops at the second pin. Insert the key. You may have to wiggle it a bit. Pull the knob to remove the cylinder. It should basically fall out under its own weight if you have it pointed down. To reassemble it, insert the key into the cylinder, hold the latch closed, push the cylinder in, and remove the key..

Once you clean the lock, do you apply a light oil to it? Just to keep springs and clips intact.
I love these videos. This is how everyone can improve their cars on your own, many times for minimal cost. Corvettes are crucified foe rattles on the interior. Little things like this keep that in check.

🤠Fantastic . . . . . Glad I'm not the only one who sat like a "village idiot" trying to get the lock out of the glove box. Thanks!
