I found some bush sized trees this summer while marking timber. They looked so different that I studied them for a while, and couldn't come up with what they were. Now I'm almost certain they were pawpaw. They didn't have any fruit. It was a drought year and that doesn't encourage for much fruit production. I am also in New York, so I bet I am in the extreme northern range. I am very curious what they taste like! I love regional foods.
if you put them in the freezer and remove them to the fridge 6 hours before you eat them it removes the stringent bitter taste and provides a nice smooth flavor
Thank you! Very cool. I just found some trees in my neighborhood in Central, NY and very excited about it. 🤩
A very delicious fruit, tastes like a custard.
Finding these bananas and eating them on a random explore was truly inspiring!

Yes! This tree is why I got interested in trees to begin with. There's tons along the trail by susquehanna river.
I can't stomach the texture of the fruits, but they sure are beautiful plants.
Largest fruit in the US and Canada, not north america. Mexico has much larger native fruit like the papaya.
I've always wanted to taste pawpaw but no luck, I've heard they're a bit tricky to grow in a suburban yard setting
Always worth a try! 🙂
A very cool tree but the flavour is a bit of an acquired taste (there is a "hint of turpentine," at least in the northern provenances)

I agree with you, they do taste a little odd in my opinion. I wouldn't complain if I were a forest animal tho!
