How do we know which verbs are -ir variation 1 and 2?

To summarize, you can memorize them in chunks or look them up.
Good luck!
You can classify first and second variation:
1st variation: memorize (no other way)
2nd variation: these are the verbs ending with 'rir'

Good question! Unfortunately, I can't answer it. We would need to go back hundreds of years and ask the people who formulated the language. This Wikipedia entry is a great starting point for studying why Spanish is the way it is (influences from other languages, spelling mistakes by ancient translators, convenience...): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Spanish_language

hey you got all that right, but I think there's also a variation for re verbs..... prendre for example..... it's isn't nous prendons, vous prendez, and ils prendent... it's nous prenons, vous prenez, and ils prennent
