How to select resistor value for LED with simple calculation (Ohm's Law)

  • In this video, I have explained how to calculate the resistance value for LEDs for different input voltage. It is very important to select right series resistor before using a LED in a circuit otherwise the LED may burnout.
    I will request you to watch the complete tutorial video of the LED Resistor calculation but you can also jump to any topic by click on the following Time Stamps:
    00:34 How to identify forward voltage, current rating of LED from datasheet.
    00:54 How to calculate resistance value for 9V input voltage (Ohm Law).
    02:21 How to calculate the resistor wattage in the circuit.
    04:59 How to select the resistance value for 12V input voltage.
    In this video, I have shown how to identify the LED rating from the datasheet and from that rating how to calculate resistance value and wattage required to connect the led in a circuit using ohm law for different input voltages. After calculation the resistance value we have practically measured the voltage and current value with a multimeter and compare it with the calculated data.
    Here I have used a 3V led and calculated the resistance value in 9 volts and 12-volt circuit.

    I was looking for exactly these calcs for a tiny DC motor application. I think this will only work for electronic loads and not any kind of resistive or power load, although a tiny motor seems like it must be purely inductive, I still cannot get anything to work for the motor. A finely organized and clear video. This should help me going forward as a noob.

      perhaps you could also consider the wattage of the motor to choose the correct resistor with enough watts for the motor

    I'm just trying to make a few things with LEDs in them and I had No Idea how to figure out what resistor I needed to make a small lightning cloud using LEDs and a 9v battery.
    Now I know!!
    It's pretty obvious that I don't know anything about electronics but you made learning easy!!

    Excellent video. Does it matter if the resistor is placed at the anode of the LED? Or is it common practice to place the resistor at the cathode of the LED? What would be the reason for either? Cheers

  • @tuesday630
    @tuesday630 4 роки тому

    To summarize to see if I understand - So if I'm using a 9v battery and a 3v LED, there's a difference of 6v. If I divided my voltage difference (6) by my amperage of 0.03 (30 milliamps or 30 thousand) = 200. So, then you want a resistor that is at least 200 ohms but not much more. A common resistor in this range is the 220 ohms resistor.
