We have a pivot like yours. Not new but didn't cost us anything as a neighbor gave it to us. He just wanted it removed from his property and asked us if we wanted it. It was quite a job to dismantle and rebuild it.

I have never seen this type of irrigation before where I am from we use irrigation machines with large sprinklers that can reach 430 feet in radius and have up to 3300 feet of hose. Nice to see different types of farming equipment

funny story about flood irrigation from my youth. We farmed western KS around Ashland. The owner had promised my dad that he would promote him to foreman but then hired this young grad from K-State that was an ag econ major. This kid had never been on a farm before. The boss wanted dad and the new "foreman" to set up the irrigation on the corn acreage. We farmed corn in half sections. So the new foreman told dad to go to the end of the rows so he could turn the water to the next row. The boss came by to see how it was going and found dad resting in the shade of a tree at the other end of the field. He asked dad why he was just sitting there instead of working, and when dad told him, he really didn't laugh that much. That was when my dad decided that he would go to college.

You ever see the big single gun irrigation units? That travel across a field being pulled by a cable hooked to a winch which is anchored by a tractor. It pulls a water supply line as it goes across the field. A number of Farmers in Michigan still use them, till they can afford the center pivot system.

Like they said their pivots are old, so it is old technology, now they are automated, and ran by a computer.

I have to use the CAT 320 to stand one of mine or the neighbors up every year it seems. Went to electric about 4 years ago, MUCH BETTER. Kansas, "play the game tonight ";;;;;;;;;; good luck getting parts, Joe broke the system. haven't you guys used gated pipe before? probably never used siphon tubes either?

Results of research completed at Michigan State University and replicated in the USA and other countries have shown that SWRT subsurface membrane technology doubles the water holding capacity of coarse textured soils. Dramatic increases in biomass and crop production are possible and expected when more soil moisture is available throughout the growing season.

How heavy is that pipe for lifting? It does look like a terrible amount of work! How many rows of pipe did you lay in one day in that corn? Looks like you boys were taught very well how to lay that pipe!!

Where’s the wind breaks (trees) and scare crows? Flood irrigation is soooo much more efficient, and doesn’t tap out the aquifers! Keep up the good work. But bring back the ditches and natural grasses aka (weeds)

flood irrigation? no - surface irrigation.
more evaporation losses? no - center pivots have more, because of wind, if over 14 mph.
center pivots are flexible? only if the soils are right for them.
surface irrigation can be as automated as center pivot
subsurface drip can be inefficient if poorly managed. Same for all irrigation systems.
Any system, even the most uniform, can be inefficient if mismanaged. Irrigation options: surface, subsurface, sprinkler, drip, and hybrids of these. The buyer of a new irrigation system should consider how uniform the irrigation system can be, and how easy to manage to get the optimal depth of application. I have seen surface irrigation designs that are more uniform that center pivot.
I am a retired Professional Engineer, agricultural. My BS was Ag Eng with soil and water. My MS was Ag Eng in irrigation. My thesis work was CFD for level border irrigation.

Would surface irrigation be ideal for growing cane on a field 200-300 metres across, 2.5km ahead?

But your farm is wasting water when using the flood technique.

Not all the time with "gravity" as we called it. just about every quarter we ran in south central Nebraska had a reuse pit on it just like the lagoon and we would pump it back up to the headland on a separate line of pipe that ran on one end of the farm. The pipe being used is very old screw gate style and it isnt as common for someone to add additional gates in between these screw style. Many times we would run gates on 15-20" spacing and then ditching it to run every other row or using a plastic style "sock" that hooked over the pipe to direct flow was used. In dry years like this I preferred gravity as you could achieve a much deeper saturation level versus trying to play catch up with a pivot.

Compare to other methods yes it is waste full. Prolly won't be irrigation for the next generation. Google Loss of Ogallala Aquifer. Water management is very important when using this method.
