I've been enjoying your content for the last few months, and became a Patreon sponsor this morning. I work in the sheep industry on the Oregon coast and am passionate about sheep welfare and health in a production setting. I cannot overstate how much I appreciate the life that your little flock enjoys with you. They are getting to express all the aspects of their natural social behavior, and obviously are very fulfilled and well adjusted. I feel great knowing that my modest contribution is helping several sheep live such a great life. Cheers to you and your mission!

I have solar fairy lights outside in Michigan weather year round. This will be their 2nd winter. And yes, they do still light up in winter almost every day.
I also have a 4 foot retro looking golfer statue that someone used to have hard wired into a light switch at their house. The Romex was sliced off at the back. My bf's dad got it at some auction. I had the same idea for the glass lantern the golfer was holding. I cleaned up the jar, sanded & repainted the rusty lid, & stuffed it with fairy lights. Stuck the solar part in the flower bed next to it. Now it looks like he's got a jar full of fireflies that comes on every night when the sun goes down.

I did a video years ago on a mailbox stove. It worked OK, but was thinking of the stove being used indoors in case a home had a long power outage. I know foam isn't he best natural material for a mattress but I've bought mine at Fred Meyers store in Washington state. I believe 30" x72"x3" thick. They don't compress that much and are super comfy. Cheap too at about $25. Love the pimp job!

    Stove idea...
Its better to eliminate losing heat from camper, than to generate more heat. Layers of dead air are used in Extreme North tribes, to turn -50f into +80f with very small fires. They use a tent, in a tent, in a tent, with dead air between. Body heat alone being trapped can be sufficient, so reducing thermal loss is most efficient way to effectively heat from everything I've read. However, you are the one living it, not me, so I've little to meaningfully contribute.
I do appreciate your content. Thank you for sharing.

Every decision needs to consider weight & sustainability. Portability. Wood can be harvested everywhere, so he & the sheep need not carry the weight. I've seen multiple suggestions regarding insulation & several about modifying the stove set up, regarding plaster, etc. I don't believe weight, portability, & sustainability were considered when these suggestions were made.
I too am curious about how the horizontal pipe will work out & wonder how he manages to not burn himself, so I'd love to see a video with a deeper dive into how he came to the decisions made. I just assumed that he intended maximum fresh air circulation, & that the horizontal pipe was intended to radiate heat down on him from the entire length of the wagon. 🤷
Here's hoping we get a follow up vid!🤞😆👃😀
Edit: I watch a lot of car life vids. People often warn about using up all the oxygen in the enclosed space & stress how important it is to crack windows for ventilation so you don't die overnight in your sleep. THAT'S why I assumed this set up was intended for maximum ventilation.

@Eric kicking liberals It would--so much so that he wouldn't need the stove as it would bake him! One lg roll of reflectix would cover the whole wagon and do the job, very light and not bulky.
I am thinking a simple piece of mylar or just aluminum foil taped down under the sleeping pads might be nice, no weight or bulk but keeps cold from ground away, reflects heat back. Could be taped or glued on underneath the lids.

Hi Aaron I have just found your channel and just wanted to say how much you have cheered up my day. 🌈 Living in the UK it is inspirational to learn from your sustainable expertise and passion for community. I have recently become much more interested in my local foraging foods and your knowledge of your land is awesome. (Your credit card size info sheets are a wonderful gift).
Your gentle serene spirit radiates the divine and is matched by the gorgeous Happy, ram man and co and I truly believe they must be some of the happiest sheep in the northern hemisphere…. 😍
No wonder they yield so much yummy milk for you. ☺️
However, I don’t underestimate what you are achieving (having spent only a few nights sleeping out in our bitterly cold northern nights). You use of both wool and the solar oven reminds us of the synergies that can be found from both the old and new. Truly impressive and it’s also reassuring to see you with your improved features and new stove and your ‘pimped up wagon’. 😁
I hope to make my way over to Patreon soon. …. In the meantime.
Sending you all my love and a traditional Irish blessing for your next adventures ahead.
‘May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face and rain fall soft upon your land.
And until we meet (perhaps one day) may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

Cool you got some nice upgrades! Looks good.
The stove looks similar to the one I got for my truck shell from Vevor for $160.(I think it's more $ now) which was price I could deal with. Yours looks bigger. Mine is very solid & quality was great. It has 2"pipe since my shell is old metal work shell I have a hole for pipe with screw in plug for off season. Since I rent a run down home now I set it up in newest add on since this old place is tinder. Even old chimney is sealed dispite having pipe inside block it is fire hazard. But add on had new walls though old roof as it was patio. So routed through wall. All tent stoves I've seen have rear stovepipes. I've gotten several things from Vevor as they are reasonable & all have been quality stuff.

Love the fairy lights!! And, your friend is so clever...now you have a table...this will make many things easier for you! When it snows, how do your sheep stay warm? I think you mentioned you make a flap for them with your wagon and they go under it? Do they stay warm by huddling together? I don't know much about sheep so was curious.

The heat affected zone(HAZ), the area around the weld where the molten metal and the cold base metal interacts. The cold base metal cools the molten metal very quickly at the edge of the weld creating large metal crystal grain structures that are brittle verses small, tight grain structures that are more durable to stress loads. Aaron, always inspired by your quest for knowledge and willingness to share. Keep up the fantastic work!

    • @matiassu5604
      @matiassu5604 2 роки тому

HAZ is mistly produced by difference in crystalization with surrounding material, producing mechanical stresses. It can be alleviated by heating it (at a lower temperature than tempering) and cooling it slowly. I think it's called annealing.

Have you ever considered a hammock as a sleeping arrangement? You can easily put it up/down. The entire thing is washable. Very little in regards to pressure points. I sleep fulltime in a hammock and once I move out of house living and into skoolie life or something along those lines... I plan to use my hammock. I've been in mine for over a year now and have found no downside... Only benefits. Including zero lower back pain upon waking ...something that plagued me on mattresses. Not sure how much sleeping space you can get inside your wagon or what kind of reinforcements you might need but even if it was just for summer sleeping in the open air... I highly recommend the hammock life :)

    • @123Homefree
      @123Homefree  2 роки тому +6

Hammock/tarp are one of the first alternative shelters people tend to gravitate towards when seeking alternatives, it was the first alternative shelter i used and used it every night for a couple of years despite the periodic pinched nerve i would get in my neck! I also stopped using them because they reduce the amount of spots you can stay, then their canopy, tarp, shell and underquilt take time to put up and take down, they are at a higher level of sight than ground/tarp sleeping so they give away your location, they still arent quite warm enough for me in the winter eveb with an underquilt and tyvek or other breathable/windproof shell around the hammock. I ended up trying other more efficient options for my personal lifestyle like my hobo umbrella shelters and instant pitch wearable tipis.
Hammock and buslife seemed over romanticized/rated in my experiences, urban guerrilla hammock camping was sooo cool in my mind until i started realizing things like any trees with enough space up in them to string a straight hammock arent very likely to have dense enough coverage to hide the outline of my camo hammock, not to mention i couldnt do it year round after the leaves fell. Buses on the move are always having to have mechanical and electrical repairs done, gas is horrendous and keeps us longterm $laves and then there are waay less options for places to park. My wagon is actually skinny enough to fit through standard fence gates so can fit in peoples’ backyards!

Mylar Emergency Blankets, there should be plenty of ways to get them, homeless shelters, maybe food banks, you might even be able to ask the local EMS squad for a couple as they do have them for SAR.
The big problem I would have insulating a wagon like that is the horizontal chimney. Insulation does no good if there is a giant gap in your ceiling that heat will bleed through. If you could make the chimney vertical so you can safely insulate the roof with no fire risk, your wagon would be much more heat efficient. You could use some sort of flashing provided it will withstand the temperatures, maybe in conjunction with that insulated fireproof plaster that DIYers make forges with. That would make your wagon lose less heat.

Reflectix. Foil faced bubble wrap. The stuff is amazing. Also very lightweight and not too bulky nor scratchy. A piece under the sleeping pads. Another piece to roll out over the top of wagon or glued to underside. Removable for summer. Chimney hole would need a small piece of rock wool.

Aaron, if you could start over with a redesigned wagon, would you change anything? Would you recommend using aluminum tubing to make it lighter in weight? I think that would be better for me. Would you have two yokes upfront instead of one? Would you make it any wider by adding a slide out that can be opened when parked and closed while in motion? Perhaps add bug netting. I love the concept of your wagon, sheep and lifestyle for a SHTF scenario. I have an electric bicycle and a small pet trailer. But if I were to have a wagon fabricated for a shepherdeess lifestyle that would be ideal for the upcoming Tribulation. No tear up and tear down every day with a tent. No carrying things on your back. I currently live in a huge home on two acres in a rural setting with my husband and two consumer pet dogs and one cat and chickens. Sold all my goats two years ago. I'm thinking of getting some sheep this upcoming Spring. Trying to decide on a breed. I really like polled sheep, fine wool (not double coated) but would need decent to very good milkers. There are over 1,000 sheep breeds to filter through. I'm not doing this lifestyle unless I absolutely have to, but i could get two ewes to start. I'd like a wagon though. I could use my electric bike to pull it initially. Any sheep breed recommendations? I want them under 100 pounds so I can handle them easier. Thanks. April.

Finn are the smallest dairy sheep breed who also have one of the finest wool of the dairy breeds. I wouldnt change a thing about this wagon design width, i would make it 8 foot long instead of 6 so a full sheet of cloroplast fits over it still and then i would just have to add on the roofing over hangs on each end. My roof height is adjustable so when i finally replace my cloroplast roof for the first time i will leave it longer in height and set my roof to its maximum height.

@@SovereignSymphony i suggest not making it taller than 6’ or else it cant fit under nearly as many trees for shade in the summer and its nice to be able to see over it since mostly looking ocer my right shoulder back at animals means i can turn just a little more and see cars coming

Can I donate some money for softer sheep harnesses?I know that rough frayed nylon rope can’t be comfortable for them. Nice hemp straps would be better and less irritating.

I have a paxcess 120w panel and 50k mAh battery set for car camping. Looking at what your use cases are likely to be they're both probably complete overkill. With the largish Anker battery you have a $100 60w solar panel is probably more than enough for your needs.

wondering why you dont use mylar or some other reflective film on the inside of your roof for winter.... those mylar sleeping bags cut open would be plenty big enough to do a great job. would keep you very warm and reflect your body heat back
