So liberating getting out of Cowboy Chord jail! (Gaol?) After feeling pretty confident as a beginner I was wondering what my next steps should be... I have been steadily sinking into the morass of CAGED, 5 boxes, myloxian etc etc. Not that those things are bad but I realize Ive been beating myself up for not "working hard enough" on them. And - god forbid - not memorizing the fretboard. Then you come along to remind me why I got started in the first place: the joy of just making music. Your philosophy of experimentation is just what I needed, not being afraid to noodle around and try some simple alterations. Rules shmools. And getting such sophisticated chord tones is a major (and occasionally minor) bonus. Thanks for this fantastic lesson, Tony!

So much better than leaning scales for me because as soon as I spend time learning them I forget them in a couple of weeks and I have nothing to solo over anyway. I am in awe of people with good memories. Learning the neck with songs, riffs and licks seems to stick better.

I like that diagonal major chord on strings D, G and B since I have trouble with the same chord where you bar strings B and E at the same fret and also fret the G string one fret higher. I have to flatten my 1st finger and arch the 2d finger and sometime mute a string. When that diagonal chord is I chord, the IV chord is the "straight across" A shape at the fret where your ring finger was. If only I could remember that when playing.

Great lesson. Thanks. Are you playing the open A and E (highest/thinnest) strings on all of the chords or just the "A" chord? ...i.e., do you just play the fretted strings for the other chords (C,F,G)? Cheers , Malcolm
