  • Back Basin, home to the world's highest geyser, is one of two geyser basins at Norris Geyser Basin, with the other one being Porcelain Basin. We have several virtual Yellowstone tours on Porcelain Basin as well.
Steamboat Geyser is not only the highest geyser in Yellowstone, but anywhere in the world. Even though the intervals between Steamboat's eruptions have been decreasing in recent years, you still have to be lucky to see it erupt. I was there early one morning, a few weeks after I shot this video, and the surrounding area was very wet, with little icicles hanging onto the trees. It seemed likely that Steamboat had erupted overnight, so I went a little further down the boardwalk, to Cistern Spring.
Cistern Spring and Steamboat are connected underground, and when Steamboat erupts, it draws water from Cistern Spring. Sure enough, Cistern was just about empty, which meant that Steamboat had in fact erupted! Cistern Spring is the pool in this video's thumbnail picture.
Back Basin also has numerous other geysers and thermal features, on a boardwalk trail that is 2 1/2 miles (four kilometres) long, and you'll find some great photo opportunities all over Back Basin.
Norris Geyser Basin is Yellowstone National Park's most thermally active basin, and you can always expect to see a lot of thermal activity there.

Man this is a great video, it looks like it was a perfect day without crowds.
Yellowstone was one of the most amazing places I’ve ever been. Everything about the trip was beyond my expectations.

Thanks. Pleased to hear that. It was the start of the season last year. Remember that Yellowstone opened about six weeks late, so there was no-one there when we went in, in early June.
